Solar-powered plane set for world tour

Beijing, October 15: The team that built the first solar-powered plane is planning a round-the-world flight within two years, with a stopover in China, a media report Thursday said.

“We plan to stop in Hawaii, the US, a European country, Japan and probably China – it is a country that cannot be ignored,” said Bertrand Piccard, one of the project’s founders and pilots, who visited Shanghai to find partners for the trip.

BlackBerry given more time to solve deadlock over private data

New Delhi, October 12: The central government Tuesday decided to give more time to BlackBerry maker, Research in Motion (RIM), for providing Indian intelligence agencies access to the private data being sent over its handsets.

‘They have been given more time following discussions which are progressing satisfactorily,’ home ministry spokesperson Onkar Kedia told IANS. He, however, said the time for the deadline has not been decided.

But sources said the new deadline will be till Dec 31.

Ovi by Nokia is the brand for Nokia’s internet service which can be used by a mobile device or computer.

Keeping Indian consumers in mind, Nokia has introduced thousands of applications on the Ovi store optimised for Nokia N8.

Small asteroid to fly past earth: NASA

Washington, October 12: A small asteroid will fly past earth early Tuesday within the earth-moon system, but with no probability of impacting earth, NASA has said.

The asteroid, 2010 TD54, will have its closest approach to earth’s surface at an altitude of about 45,000 km at 6:50 a.m., Xinhua quoted NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory ( JPL) as saying Monday.

At that time, the asteroid will be over southeastern Asia in the vicinity of Singapore, the JPL said.

California, October 10: Internet giant Google will soon launch a car that can drive by itself. Google engineers have tested a “self-driving” car on the streets of California and covered 140,000 miles on the road, reports.

The cars use video cameras mounted on the roof, radar sensors and a laser range finder to look out for traffic, software engineer Sebastian Thrun said.

There is, however, a trained driver in stand-by mode, ready to take control.

Jaipur, October 09: Men could soon be popping contraceptive pills made of plants if the results of experiments carried out at Rajasthan University are anything to go by.

The zoology department of the university has been experimenting on rats for the last five years and the results have been encouraging.

‘We want to develop a safe, cheap and reversible orally active male contraceptive agent from traditional medicinal plants which will have no side effects,’ P.C. Mali, assistant professor at the university’s zoology department, told IANS.

Google has 35 mn Indian SMEs on its radar

Kolkata, October 03: Having already doubled its small and medium enterprise (SME) customer base in India within a year, global Internet search giant Google is now aggressively trying to reach out to the entire sector for online advertising.

India has an estimated 35 million SMEs, out of which only about 200,000 have an online presence through domains, sub-domains and blogs.

“We plan to reach out to all of them, as well as educate the ones who are not online, on the benefits of online advertising,” Google Asia-Pacific Head (Online Sales and Operations) Aliza Knox said.

New Delhi September 26: Excessive Internet browsing can lead to social isolation, insomnia, depression, anxiety and obesity thus affecting mental health of an individual, says a report.

A study conducted by the Associated Chamber of Commerce and Industry of India also said children of working parents are found to be more Internet addictive in the absence of parental supervision as compared to those whose single parents are employed.

The basic purpose of the study was to ascertain the extent of Internet overuse, especially by children between eight to 18 years.

Japan to develop nuclear forensic technologies

Tokyo, September 26: Japan will develop nuclear forensic technologies in the fiscal year beginning April 2011 to identify the origin of nuclear materials in an effort to prevent their trafficking and proliferation.

Amid growing international concern over nuclear terrorism, the Japanese government is aiming to analyze the composition of uranium fuel and reprocessed plutonium in the country to develop technologies for determining where the uranium originated and when it was produced, and to create a database of the results, government sources said Saturday.

Iran’s nuclear agency trying to stop computer worm

Tehran, Spetmber 26: Iran’s nuclear agency is trying to combat a complex computer worm that has affected industrial sites throughout the country and is capable of taking over power plants, Iranian media reports said.

Experts from the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran met this week to discuss how to remove the malicious computer code, or worm, the semi-official ISNA news agency reported yesterday.

Viral attack: Avoid visiting Orkut

Denmark, September 25: Computer virus ‘Bom Saboda’ or ‘Bom Sabado’, which means good Saturday in Portuguese has attacked Google’s social networking website Orkut on Saturday morning.

A malicious Bom Sabado is a cross-site-scripting attack, which is flooding the scrap of Orkut users and also linking it to different groups.

The Orkut has asked its users to avoid visiting Orkut till the problem is fixed.

India, Argentina ink deal on N-energy

New Delhi, September 24: India and Argentina have signed an agreement for cooperation in peaceful uses of nuclear energy, according to Department of Atomic Energy.

Agreement between the Government of India and the Argentine Republic for Cooperation in Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy was signed at Vienna by Dr S Banerjee, Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission and Dr Norma Boero, President of the Atomic Energy Commission of Argentina (CNEA) on Thursday.

Brain scans may now decide if child can be prosecuted

London, September 24: A brain scan, which can show our maturity levels, could in future decide whether a child should be prosecuted for a crime.

An MRI scan can tell one’s age after just five minutes because of the difference in structure between an adult’s and a child’s brain.

Now scientists say that defence lawyers could use these scans to argue that their client’s brain was not mature enough for him/her to truly understand what she/he has done, the journal New Scientist said.

Prithivi missile fails to take off from ITR

Balasore, September 24: Balasore, September 24: The medium range surface to surface missile ”Prithivi-II” failed to take off during the test fire from the integrated Test Range(ITR), about 15 kms from here today.

The indigenously-built missile, developed by the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO), was scheduled to test fire from a mobile launcher from the ITR complex.

The 350 km range missile, designed for quick maneuverability and war-time efficiency, however, developed a technical snag during the test fire at 1002 hrs and failed to take off.

Infosys leader in application outsourcing: Forrester

New Delhi, September 23: Infosys Technologies Thursday said it has been named as a leader in applications outsourcing (AO) among North American AO providers by technology research company, Forrester Research.

‘Infosys scored the highest of the India-centric providers,’ said a Forrester report.

Additionally, Infosys received the highest client reference score in effectiveness of AO processes and among the highest in the average client reference scores. Infosys also received the highest possible client reference score in account management and governance skills and flexibility.

ISRO to replace two ageing satellites in December

Chennai, September 23: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) plans to replace two of its ageing satellites with new ones by December, an official said Thursday.

The agency is planning to send in space two rockets for the purpose.

First to fly towards the heavens will be ISRO’s heavy rocket – the geosynchronous satellite launch vehicle (GSLV) – sometime during the second week of December carrying a communication satellite GSAT 5 – intended to replace the ageing INSAT 2E.

Blackberry issue: DoT awaiting technical upgradation by telecom operators

New Delhi, September 23: The Department of Telecommunications Thursday said it was yet to get the technical compliance report from various telecom operators testifying that they have technically upgraded their network to encrypt BlackBerry’s enterprise mail services.

‘Compliance report that the network has been technically upgraded has been provided by just a few operators. Many are yet to submit it,’ a senior DoT official told IANS.
