NASA spacecraft spies on Mercury

Washington, March 18: For the first time, Earth has a regular orbiting eye-in-the-sky spying on the solar system’s smallest and strangest planet, Mercury. NASA’s spacecraft called Messenger successfully veered into a pinpoint orbit Thursday night after a 6 1/2-year trip and 4.9 billion miles (7.9 billion kilometers) and tricky manoeuvering to fend off the gravitational pull of the sun.

Software shows how Earth evolved millions of years ago

Sydney, March 17: A new software allows us to see not only the Earth’s surface as it is now, but also takes us back in time to see how it evolved over hundreds of millions of years ago.

Earlier, at the click of a mouse, scientists could only virtually inspect our planet’s surface using widely available mapping software.

The new piece of free software is developed by a Sydney University geophysics team and international collaborators.

L&T Infotech to evacuate all 160 employees from Japan

Mumbai, March 16: L&T Infotech Wednesday ordered the evacuation of all its 160 employees and 15 family members from earthquake and tsunami-hit Japan, a company official said.

According to a spokesman, the company has chartered a Kingfisher Airlines flight which will leave Tokyo’s Narita Airport late Thursday and is expected to arrive in Chennai the next day.

L&T Infotech operates two branches in Japan, one in Tokyo and Yokohama, and the employees from the both units are being recalled for a temporary period, he said.

Microsoft Releases Faster Explorer Suited to Web Applications

New York, March 16: Microsoft Corp. released a speedier version of its Internet Explorer browser that adds privacy controls and video features, a bid to regain market share lost to Firefox and Google Inc.’s Chrome.

Internet Explorer 9 relies on HTML5, the latest version of the language that presents Web content, which lets sites handle more multimedia content. The browser’s designed to run applications within the browser more quickly, while adding more powerful privacy options than Google offers. It’s available for download today, the Redmond, Washington-based company said.

Microsoft releases new Internet Explorer 9

Washington, March 16: Microsoft has released the latest version of its Internet Explorer web browsing software free in a bid to fend off recent challenges by Firefox and Google Chrome.

“IE9 has just released around the world,” a booming voice told a cheering crowd at 11pm on Monday (1600 AEDT today) in the Austin City Limits Live concert hall where a launch party was being held.

Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) was available for download in 30 languages at beautyoftheweb.com.

Infosys tells its Tokyo employees to send back families

Bangalore, March 15: Global software major Infosys Technologies Ltd has advised its Indian employees to send their families back to India and has given them the choice to return if the situation warrants it, a top official said Tuesday.

“We have about 350 Indian software professionals working at our proximity development centre in Tokyo. We have advised them to first send back their families and gave them a choice to return or stay back depending on the situation,” Infosys Chief Executive S. Gopalakrishnan told IANS.

New Delhi, March 14: Reaping the benefits of the Air Force Network (AFNET) communication system it launched last year, the Indian Air Force (IAF) will launch an exclusive 3G wireless service in June that will enable its officers and air warriors up to the rank of sergeant stay connected 24×7.

The latest value-added service on a wideband CDMA-based 3G portable network, using state-of-the-art mobile communication technology, will be integrated into AFNET, which will be the backbone of the connectivity, an IAF press release said Monday.

NASA develops microscope for ISS

Washington, March 14: The United States’ National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has begun testing a new multi-capability microscope at the International Space Station (ISS).

It will help scientists study the effects of the space environment on physics and biology aboard the orbiting laboratory, reported photonicsonline.com.

The microscope is isolated from vibrations on the station, allowing it to obtain clear, high-resolution images.

Using high-resolution magnification, scientists can examine microorganisms and individual cells of plants and animals, including humans.

Adults with ADHD enjoyed more creative achievement than those who didn’t have the disorder. Its symptoms include inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity.

Los Angeles, March 13: In their effort to provide faster service to patients, a chain of low-cost clinics on the west coast of the US has installed robot pharmacies that deliver prescription drugs.

“In cases of infection, the time patients start taking their medicine is crucial, because if they can’t go to the pharmacy to order it and then go back later and pick it up, in that time they can get worse and end up in a hospital emergency room,” Rafael Amaro, medical director of Molina Healthcare, told EFE at a Long Beach, California, clinic.

Dynamics Inc is developing such cards- due to be introduced in the US later this year-which will have wafer- thin microprocessors and would run on batteries that can last up to three years.

However, the credit cards will only display personal information after a security code is entered.

Ballistic missile “Dhanush” test-fired

Balasore, March 11: India on Friday test fired its nuclear-capable ballistic missile ‘Dhanush’, with a range of 350 km, from a naval ship off the Orissa coast, defence sources said.

The missile was fired by Indian Navy personnel as part of user training exercise.

“The single-stage ship-based missile was flight-tested at around 1005 hours and the trial was conducted from a naval ship off Orissa coast in the sea at a spot between Paradip and Puri,” the sources said.

HCL Infosystems bags IT project from Punjab and Sind bank

New Delhi, March 10: HCL Infosystems Wednesday said it has bagged a project from the Punjab and Sind Bank (PSB) to provide smart card-based solutions in over 1,500 villages across the country.

‘The partnership aims to facilitate the provision of smart card-based technology solutions for financial inclusion, besides engaging and managing business correspondents deployed in unbanked villages allotted to PSB,’ the company said in a statement.

The company, however, did not disclose the financial transactions of the deal.

Reliance Communications inks $1.9 bn loan deal with Chinese bank

New Delhi, March 10: Reliance Communications Wednesday said it has concluded all necessary formalities with the China Development Bank for a $1.93-billion loan facility to finance its third generation telecom services business.

The loan facility is fully underwritten by the Chinese bank and represents the first and largest ever syndicated loan not only in India’s telecom sector but also in terms of a loan to an Indian entity from a Chinese financial institution, the company said.

Indian space agency to now launch three satellites in April

Chennai, March 10: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) proposes to launch the latest remote sensing satellite and two others in the second week of April, seeking to replace a crucial component in its fully-assembled launch vehicle by dismantling one section.

ISRO will take apart its polar satellite launch vehicle (PSLV) at the Sriharikota launch facility some 80 km from here to substitute the existing gas motor with an upgraded one, ISRO sources said.

Supermoon next week may cause disaster

London, March 09: The world could be in for a bumpy ride next week when the moon will make its closest approach to Earth in almost 20 years, say experts.

According to them, the astronomical event – “extreme supermoon” – may trigger earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and other disasters.

An “extreme supermoon” occurs when the Earth’s natural satellite reaches its absolute closest point. On March 19, the moon will be only 221,556 miles away – the first extreme super – moon in nearly 20 years.
