Chirayu Amin appointed interim IPL chairman

New Delhi, April 26: Baroda Cricket Association president Chirayu Amin was appointed the interim chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in place of the high-flying Lalit Modi, who came in for a scathing attack from Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Shashank Manohar in Mumbai today.

The decision to appoint Amin was taken at the crucial meeting of the IPL governing council, which lasted close to one and a half hour.

Waqar looks to rediscover Pakistan’s trademark flair

Karachi, April 26: Waqar Younis, the Pakistan coach, will look to rediscover the team’s trademark flair as they defend their World Twenty20 title in the West Indies.

“I will try to induct the same kind of aggression and fire in the team, which was Pakistan’s trademark in 1990s as it is necessary for us to win and retain the title,” Waqar said, ahead of the team’s departure for the Caribbean.

Sarwan banks on home advantage

Jamaica, April 26: Ramnaresh Sarwan hopes home advantage will give West Indies the edge in the ICC World Twenty20 beginning on Friday. West Indies have yet to win a multi-team competition since 2004, when they won the Champions Trophy in England, and after six tumultuous years Sarwan said the team needed its supporters to back them to the hilt.

Modi given 15 days time to reply to BCCI show cause

Mumbai, April 26: After suspending Lalit Modi as vice president of Board of Control for Cricket in India and Indian Premier League’s chairman and commissioner, board president Shashank Manohar Monday said alleged acts of “individual misdemeanours” of Modi have brought a bad name to the administration of cricket.

Manohar also issued a show cause notice to Modi asking him to explain within 15 days why he should not be suspended.

“The events of the last few days have thrown up lot of sad and unfortunate developments,” Manohar said in a press statement in the early hours Monday.

Mumbai, April 26: Saurabh Tiwary’s short stay at the wicket came to an abrupt end after he was brilliantly caught by Suresh Raina off Jakati for a duck.

After scoring 48 runs, Sachin Tendulkar departed while trying to push the scoring rate. Tendulkar was caught by Murali Vijay at long-off off Shadab Jakati.

Willis disgusted by Performance

London, April 25: Former English cricketer Bob Willis has said that he is not a huge fan of the Indian Premier League (IPL), and claimed the quality of some players representing the eight franchises is “rubbish”.

“You have to remember that some of the four overseas players aren’t the best, you may have two top-class Indian players, the rest are rubbish,” The Independent quoted Willis, as saying.

“The standard of play is low and with 10 teams it will get worse. It’s amazing they have the final they want, between Sachin Tendulkar and M. S. Dhoni,” he added.

Mumbai, April 25: Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and decided to bat against Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League final at the D.Y.Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Sunday.

Mumbai Indians captain Sachin Tendulkar decided to play in the team’s first final in three IPL seasons despite five stitches on his right hand.

Both the sides have fielded the same playing XI that won them the semi-finals.

IPL final: CSK openers depart for 49

Mumbai, April 25: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and elected to bat against Mumbai Indians in the high voltage final of Indian Premier League season three at the DY Patil Stadium on Sunday.

It was pleasant news for Sachin Tendulkar’s fans that he recovered from the finger injury and available for Finale.

Both the teams have made no changes for the final.

The high voltage encounter has been on between Mumbai Indians at DY Patil Stadium. CSK were 13/0 in the third over.

Gill holds AGM of IHF

New Delhi, April 25: K.P.S. Gill on Sunday conducted the Annual General Meeting of the superseded Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) and said it remains the official hockey body in the country as the government does not recognise Hockey India (HI).

Gill, who was ousted as IHF chief two years ago and later along with many IHF units joined Hockey India (HI), said the government has clearly stated in an affidavit before the court that it does not recognise the ad-hoc HI.

“Since they do not recognise HI, IHF is the official body to run the sport in the country,” Gill said.

BCCI bigwigs skip IPL final

Mumbai, April 25: Embroiled in a raging row with IPL chairman and commissioner Lalit Modi, top BCCI functionaries, including president Shashank Manohar and secretary N Srinivasan skipped the Indian Premier League’s summit clash at the DY Patil Stadium here today.

After being closeted in the Board’s Headquarters at the Wankhede Stadium premises for close to eight hours ahead of tomorrow’s IPL Governing Council meeting at the same venue, Manohar and Srinivasan departed along with IPL vice-chairman Niranjan Shah.

The trio had skipped the semifinals of the IPL too held on April 21 and 22.

Dhoni wins toss, Chennai to bat

Mumbai, April 25: Chennai Super Kings skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and opted to bat against Mumbai Indians in the IPL final at D Y Patil stadium in Navi Mumbai here today.

Sachin Tendulkar has decided to lead Mumabi Indians despite having some stiches in his right hand.

“I have still got some stiches but it’s managebale,” Tendulklar said.

Both the teams are unchanged.

Tendulkar braves injury to play in IPL final

Mumbai, April 25: Mumbai Indians captain Sachin Tendulkar braved a finger injury to play in the Indian Premier League final against Chennai Super Kings here Sunday.

Tendulkar was doubtful after he injured his right hand in the semifinals against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and the wound had to be given five stitches.

The master batsman’s presence was important in the final as he has been inspirational on the field and has also scored 570 runs at an average of 47.50.

Chandigarh, April 25: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Balbir Punj Sunday condemned the alleged tapping of phones of senior politicians and also called the Indian Premier League (IPL) controversy “the biggest scam of the 21st century”.
