Bangalore, January 09: Sri Lankan great Sanath Jayasuriya went unsold while little known Australian Daniel Christian went for a whopping $900,000 to Deccan Chargers on the second day of the players’ auction for the Indian Premier League (IPL) season four here Saturday.

Jayasuriya, who was bought by Mumbai Indians in the first edition for $975,000, joined legends like Brian Lara and Sourav Ganguly in the unsold category.

IPL-4 will have 70 league matches

Bangalore, January 09: The fourth season of the Indian Premier League will have 70 matches in the league stage, beginning April 8.”The 10 teams will play seven matches at home, and seven away. Each side will play five opponents at home and away, will take on two sides at home only, and the remaining two teams away,” The Indian cricket board said in a statement.

“There will be one league table, as in previous years, and the top four teams at the end of the league stage will qualify for the play-off matches.”

There will be four play-off matches and the tournament will end May 28.

Match-fixing: Pak lawyer seeks criminal case against Malik

Lahore, January 08: A Pakistani lawyer on Saturday filed a petition seeking local court’s direction to the police to register a criminal case against Test cricketer Shoaib Malik for allegedly making millions of rupees through match-fixing.

In the petition filed in the court of the Additional Sessions Judge here, Ishtiaq Ahmed Chaudhry alleged that Malik not only made millions of rupees through match-fixing but also damaged the country’s image.

Gambhir, who was the first player on the block, evoked a fierce bidding war between Mumbai Indians and Pune Warriors before Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kochi and Knight Riders stepped in and added spice to the proceedings. Eventually Knight Riders prevailed and snapped up the former Delhi Daredevils captain.

Kings XI Punjab went all out to buy their former player Pathan but faced a fierce fight from Delhi Daredevils. Punjab was in the bidding till $1.8 million before Daredevils grabbed him for $1.9 million.

Happy to be in IPL: Shilpa

Bangalore, January 08: Rajasthan Royals co-owner Shilpa Shetty Saturday expressed relief at overcoming all the “constraints” the consortium faced and the timely clearance they got to participate in the Indian Premier League (IPL)-4.

The Bombay High Court last month cleared the Rajasthan Royals to play in the IPL after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) terminated the franchise for lack of transparency in their shareholding pattern.

Royals, the inaugural IPL champions, bought Rahul Dravid, Johan Both and Ross Taylor in the morning sessions.

Mumbai, January 08: Ace tennis player Leander Paes revealed on Friday that he would become an actor soon and has already signed four movies. He said this while addressing students at his alma matter, the Madras Christian College Higher Secondary School.

“It’s difficult to keep playing tennis forever. I am now planning to entertain you in films. I have signed on four movies and I am at present working on one,” the tennis star said, amid thunderous cheer from the audience.

The police have decided to change the route of Mumbai Marathon, scheduled for January 16, following specific intelligence inputs about a possible terror attack.

Sourav Ganguly goes unsold at IPL-4 auction

Bangalore, January 08: Former India captain Sourav Ganguly became the first player to be unsold in the players’ auction for the fourth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) here Saturday.

Ganguly, who was in Kolkata Knight Riders, had a base price of $400,000. He failed to attract any buyer at the auction being held at the ITC Royal Gardenia. Ganguly was earlier placed in the $200,000 price bracket, but he later increased his base price to $400,000, which is the highest bracket for marquee players in the league.

Top players go under IPL hammer

Banglore, January 08: The world’s leading cricket players go under the hammer for the Indian Premier League auction as the scandal-plagued tournament looks to bounce back with its fourth season.

Former West Indies captain Brian Lara and a host of England’s Ashes heroes will be among 350 players up for grabs at the auction in Bangalore on Saturday and Sunday.

Lara and England bowler James Anderson are among 21 cricketers with the highest reserve price of $400,000 for a three-year contract, with the cash-rich Delhi and Mumbai teams likely to engage in a fierce bidding war.

Gambhir first to be auctioned for IPL 4, $2.4m to KKR

London, January 07: Soccer star David Beckham is reportedly selling his Porsche sports car worth $150,000 on internet auction site eBay.The 35-year-old England soccer ace has owned the car for the last two years, but now wants to get rid of it.

Beckham paid $100,000 for the matt-black automobile when he purchased it in 2008 and spent a further $50,000 in customising it.

The car features heated front seats and has emblazoned in the interior the number 23 – the number shirt Beckham plays in for current soccer team Los Angeles Galaxy and which he wore at Real Madrid.

Ramesh questions construction of CWG Village

New Delhi, January 08: Raising questions over construction of Commonwealth Games Village and Akshardham Temple on the banks of the Yamuna River, Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh said the former should not have been given environmental clearance while the Temple never even applied for it.

He, however, conceded that these constructions could not be demolished now.

“If your question is whether the Commonwealth Games village got environmental clearance, the answer is yes, it got. Should it have got environmental clearance, I don’t think it should have got environmental clearance.
