PPP accuses Geo TV of running anti-Zardari campaign

Lahore, November 20: Leaders of the ruling Pakistan People’s Party have accused two TV anchors of running a vilification campaign against President Asif Ali Zardari at the behest of “anti-democratic” forces.

Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira, a close aide of PPP chief Zardari, said: “Two anchors of a popular private channel are running a malicious campaign against the President but they will not succeed in their designs.”

Militant linked to attack on UN office arrested in Pak

Islamabad, November 20: Pakistani police on Friday said they had arrested a militant suspected to be linked to several suicide attacks including on the office of the UN food agency in the federal capital in which five persons were killed.

Ahmed alias Tahir was arrested in the federal capital and eight kilograms of explosives were seized from him, Inspector General of Police Kaleem Imam told a news conference.

Imam said Ahmed had links to radical Lal Masjid and had also fought in the troubled Swat valley. A suicide jacket reportedly found in his possession was shown to the media.

200 websites spread al Qaeda’s message in English

Riyadh, November 20: Increasing number of English-language websites are spreading al Qaeda’s message to Muslims in West.

They translate writings and sermons once largely out of reach of English readers and often feature charismatic clerics like Anwar al-Awlaki, who exchanged dozens of e-mails with the US Army psychiatrist accused of the shootings at the Fort Hood military base in Texas.

The US-born al-Awlaki has been an inspiration to several militants arrested in the United States and Canada in recent years, with his web-based sermons often turning up on their computers.

Roadside bomb kills three policemen in Pakistan

Islamabad, Nov 20: A roadside bomb killed three police officers and wounded six early Friday in Pakistan’s troubled north-western city of Peshawar, police said.

The casualties occurred when a police vehicle on patrol was hit by a remote-controlled bomb in the Yakka Toot neighbourhood.

‘Two policemen died at the scene while one more died in the hospital,’ police officer Abdul Qadir said.

The blast took place a day after a suicide bomber on foot detonated his explosives at the gates of a court complex in Peshawar, killing at least 19 people.

US missiles kill 4 militants in Pak’s tribal region

Islamabad, November 19: Four militants were killed and five others injured when a US drone fired two missiles at a compound in a village in Pakistan’s troubled North Waziristan tribal region, reports said today.

The drone fired two missiles at a compound in Shanakhora village of North Waziristan Agency, officials were quoted as saying by TV news channels.

Suspected militants were living in the compound that was targeted just before midnight yesterday, they said.

Militants surrounded the area and barred people from entering the compound that was struck by the drone.

16 killed in Peshawar blast; sixth in 11 days

Peshawar, November 19: A suicide bomber struck outside a Pakistan court, killing 16 people on Thursday in the sixth attack on the northwestern city in 11 days as troops press a major anti-Taliban offensive.

The bomb exploded at the main gate of the building near the five-star Pearl Continental Hotel, where at least nine people were killed when attackers shot their way through a security checkpost and blew up a truck bomb in June.

Another blast in Peshawar, at least 15 killed

Peshawar, November 19: A powerful blast ripped through a court in northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar on Thursday, killing at least 15 and injuring 20 others.

As per the latest news report, many lawyers were present in the court when blast occurred near the main gate of judicial complex at Khyber Road in Peshawar.

According to eyewitnesses, the blast occurred in a car parked within the court premises.

Meanwhile, police have cordoned off the area.

The blast is believed to be in the wake of Pakistan’s Army ongoing offensive in South Waziristan.

Fifteen killed in Peshawar blast

Peshawar, November 19: A bomb has exploded outside a court building in the northwestern city of Peshawar in Pakistan, killing at least 15 people and wounding 25 others, police say.

“It happened outside the judicial complex,” police officer Abdul Wali told Reuters on Thursday.

Peshawar, which lies on the edge of Pakistan’s lawless tribal belt, has recently been the scene of several explosions.

The bombing comes three days after a similar blast in Peshawar left five people dead and another 37 injured.

Pak Army claims to have cleared Taliban from S Waziristan

Peshawar, November 17: Pakistan Army today claimed that its forces waging a tough ground offensive in the lawless South Waziristan tribal region have captured most of the towns and populated centres from the Taliban.

Taliban’s Swat chief Fazlullah claims he is in Afghanistan

Islamabad, November 17: Maulana Fazlullah, the chief of Taliban in Pakistan’s Swat valley, has claimed that he fled to Afghanistan after evading troops conducting operations against militants and threatened to launch “hit and run attacks” soon against security forces in the restive northwest region.

“I have arrived in Afghanistan safely,” Fazlullah told BBC Urdu on phone.

He read out a written statement and said his men will soon launch “hit and run attacks” on security forces in Swat.

Pak SC disposes off cases involving Prez Zardari

Islamabad, November 17: Pakistan’s Supreme Court today disposed off two cases involving President Asif Ali Zardari after being informed that they related to matters which had already been settled.

One case pertained to the freezing of Zardari’s assets by an anti-corruption bench of the Lahore High Court in 1997. The other was related to an appeal filed by the Sindh government challenging the transfer of a criminal case from an anti-terrorist court to a sessions court.

180 Taliban killed in South Waziristan: Pakistan Army

Islamabad, November 17: Pakistani security forces have cleared the Taliban stronghold of Srarogha in South Waziristan after an intense five-day battle in which 180 militants and seven soldiers were killed, disclosed an army officer Tuesday.

Briefing reporters in South Waziristan’s largest town of Wana, Brigadier Shafiq, the commander of the Rah-e-Nijat military operation, said troops were now advancing towards Makeen, another stronghold of the militants, and the area would also be cleared within a few days, Online news agency reported.

PPP to play down differences with allies to save Govt

Islamabad, Nov 17: The police have formed committees, which will include the aged, to tackle terror in this Pakistani capital. The committee members would collect information about tenants and visit schools and colleges to guide students.

The committees comprise the youth, members of senior citizens’ committees and personnel of ‘Rescue 15’ which provides aid to terror victims, a police spokesman said.

Pak spy worked in mobile phone repair shop: police

New Delhi, November 16: The alleged Pakistani spy who was arrested in the national capital was working in a mobile phone repair shop in north-east Delhi, police sources said today.

Mohd Sayeed Ali was arrested from the International airport here on Saturday when he was trying to board a flight to Saudi Arabia using a fake passport.

He was working in the mobile repair shop on Loni Road in the area and staying in Shahadra locality for three years, sources said.

Govt can take action against Musharraf in Bugti’s murder case

Islamabad, Nov 16: Pakistan government will take action if authorities in Balochistan make a request for the arrest of former President Pervez Musharraf in connection with Baloch leader Nawab Akbar Bugti’s murder case, Interior Minister Rehman Malik has said.

The Balochistan government has not yet made any demand for Musharraf’s arrest, Mr. Malik told a TV news channel. If the federal government receives such a request, action will be taken, he said yesterday.

Pakistan sets up special wing to protect schools from Islamists

Islamabad, Nov 16: A special school security wing (SSSW) of the police has been set up in Pakistan’s Malakand division, which has faced the ire of militants who have destroyed over 200 schools, an official said.

‘We have established the SSSW to ensure protection to the schools, colleges and university all over Malakand,’ Mohammad Idrees Khan, deputy inspector general (DIG) of police, Malakand, told on Monday.
