War on Terror “Chilled” US Muslim Charity

Cairo, June 17: With an “unchecked power”, the George W. Bush administration’s war on terror has undermined American Muslim charities providing needed humanitarian aid and “chilled” fearful US Muslims from practicing their faith through charitable giving, a leading rights organization said.
“The federal government’s enforcement of terrorism financing laws has disproportionately affected Muslim charities,” the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) said in a report issued on Tuesday, June 16.

Gazans Treated “Like Animals”

Gaza City, June 17: Former US president Jimmy Carter said he had to “hold back tears” while touring scenes of devastation in the war-torn Gaza strip, and seeing Palestinians treated more “like animals” under the Israeli stifling siege.

“Tragically, the international community too often ignores the cries for help and the citizens of Palestine are treated more like animals than like human beings,” Cater said as he toured the blockaded enclave, reporte.

Nearly two months after the Supreme Court issued an order to look into the petition lodged by Zakia Jafri against 63 people including Chief Minister Narendra Modi in the Gulberg Society massacre, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) is yet to record statement of any of the witnesses in the case. This was revealed by SIT Convenor Geetha Johari in her affidavit before the Gujarat High Court on Tuesday.

New Delhi, June 17:Money, power and even sex are corrupting the church and anybody who dares speak up is gagged, says a Kerala nun who left her congregation last year amid much controversy and whose autobiography has just been published in English.

“The rot in the church has set in because of affluence and power. The spirit of Jesus is depreciating. The greed for money and power is allowing all sorts of evil to creep in,” said Sister Jesme, 52, who had left the Congregation of the Mother of Carmel in Kerala On Aug 31, 2008.

Stop exporting terror, PM tells Zardari

Yekaterinburg, June 17: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday bluntly told President Asif Ali Zardari to dismantle the terror infrastructure in Pakistan and stop terror attacks emanating from there against India.

Dr Singh made the remarks at a one-on-one meeting on the sidelines of the six-nation Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit here.

Badeshahi Ashoorkhana occupants given 2 days time

Hyderabad, June 17: Hyderabad collector Navin Mittal on Tuesday ordered occupants of Badeshahi Ashoorkhana to vacate within 48 hours or else face
action.

On Tuesday, the collector along with a team of officers inspected the protected area. He gave the occupants 48 hours to remove all temporary sheds and articles from the premises of the heritage structure.

Bahadurpura tehsildar Nazir Ahmad Khan and S M Subhani, advocate commissioner appointed by the high court, were also present during the inspection.

Con women decamped with Rs 1.26 lakhs cash

Hyderabad, June 17: Con women threw a mysterious chemical on a housewife and took away Rs 1.26 lakhs cash from her in Jubilee Hills on Tuesday.

The incident happened at Nava Nirmana Nagar in Jubilee Hills. At about 9 am, two women entered the house of Tulasi asking for money to organise Durga Puja.

Bank clerk drowns in swimming pool

Hyderabad, June 17: An SBI employee suffered a bout of fits while swimming and drowned in GHMC swimming pool in Ameerpet on Tuesday. He was declared
brought dead at a nearby hospital.

The victim, Y Solomon, 28, of Yellareddyguda was as a clerk at SBI’s Ameerpet branch.

On Tuesday morning, Solomon went for swimming at GHMC’s pool next to Gurudwara in Ameerpet.

“While swimming, Solomon had an epileptic seizure. One of his friends noticed him struggling in the water and raised an alarm. Pool staff immediately brought him out,” S R Nagar inspector D Pratap said.

Hyderabad, June 17: Three farmers were electrocuted when they accidentally came in contact with a high-tension line at Keesara in the early hours of
Tuesday.

Lakshman, 35, his brother Mallesh, 38, and their mother, Mallamma, 55, of Keesara died on the spot.Around 2.35 am on Tuesday, a high tension wire next to Lakshman’s house snapped and fell on their two tractors parked in front of their house.

Man held for bigamy

Hyderabad, June 17: A car driver, Shankar Naik, who married four women in the last eight years, was arrested for bigamy in Kandukur in Greater Hyderabad on Tuesday.

Eight years ago, Shankar Naik alias Chandu, 33, of Kandukur, married one Bujji of Harshagudem. Due to ill health, Bujji died after two years and Shankar married one Devi of Maheswaram. Devi did not stay with Shankar for long. She got separated from him and married another person.

Three years ago, Shankar married one Sharada of Maddur Tanda and the couple have an 18-month-old daughter.

Cops clueless as robbers strike in broad daylight

Hyderabad, June 17: Making a mockery of policing, robbers are striking at will in the Cyberabad police limits. They seem to have developed a penchant for committing offence in broad daylight.

The armed robbery at a jewellery shop in Neredmet on Tuesday was the second such incident in the same area, in less than three months.

On May 21, armed robbers shot at and stabbed Subhalakshmi Jewellers owner Mukesh Agarwal and decamped with 20 tolas of gold in A S Rao Nagar.

Demolition of illegal G+2 structures ordered

Hyderabad, June 17: The Ranga Reddy district collector M Dana Kishore has ordered the immediate demolition of all illegal G+2 structures coming up under Bandlaguda, Poppalguda, Manikonda, Bachupally and Peerzadiguda gram panchayat limits.

At a meeting with the gram panchayat secretaries under the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) on Tuesday, the collector said all the buildings that were being constructed despite being given notices should be razed immediately.

2 teachers held for harassing girl students

Hyderabad, June 17: Two teachers were arrested and produced before a court on Tuesday on the charges of sexually harassing two girl
students of the zilla parishad high school at Veeravasaram village in West Godavari district.

S Ahmed, station house officer of Veeravasaram, said the accused teachers were arrested following a complaint lodged by one of the victim’s father. It is learnt that the court directed the police to initiate the necessary action after a lawyer filed a petition seeking punishment to the teachers for their misconduct.

India denies visa to US religious freedom watchdogs

Washington, June 17: The Manmohan Singh government has scuppered a proposed visit to India this week by the United States Commission on International
Religious Freedom (USCIRF), a US Congress-mandated organization that monitors religious rights worldwide and gives independent policy recommendations to the US President and his administration.

US Senate panel clears Pakistan aid bill

Washington, June 17: Backed by the Obama Administration, the bill, which triples non-military assistance to Pakistan to $1.5 billion per annum for the
next five years, has been passed by a US Senate committee.

Called the ‘Enhanced Partnership with Pakistan Act of 2009’, the bill was passed yesterday by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee by 16 to zero votes.

It seems to have adopted a much lenient view with regard to accountability, transparency and oversight of the US aid on Pakistan and leaves the Obama Administration to take a final call on all those aspects.

One and a half year old girl kidnapped from Old city

Hyderabad, June 17: A one and a half year old girl was kidnapped by a maid servant in the Dabeerpura area of OLd city. The police sources told that Syeda Rabab Madani who is the daughter of Syed Shaukath Hussain Madani was allegedly kidnapped by the maid servant Parveen this evening.

Search for Flight 447 to continue: France

Le Bourget, France, June 16: France’s Defence Minister says the search for the remains of Air France Flight 447 will go on as long as there is hope of finding the plane’s black boxes.

Herve Morin says he met with his Brazilian counterpart at the Paris Air Show and promised that “France is determined to continue the search.”

He gave no more details about the search for the plane, which crashed into the sea on May 31 en route from Rio de Janeiro to Paris with 228 people aboard.

PIL being moved in apex court on ‘race attacks’ in Australia

New Delhi, June 16: The ‘racial attacks’ on Indians in Austriala is expected to figure in the Supreme Court before a vacation bench with a lawyer deciding to file a PIL on the issue.

The proposed PIL, which would be filed on Wednesday, seeks a direction to the Centre to ensure the safety of Indian citizens domiciled in that country.

The petition is being filed by advocate D K Garg.

Two Additional Advocate-Generals appointed

Hyderabad, June 16: The State Government today issued orders appointing two Additional Advocate-Generals. Senior advocates A Sudarshan Reddy and A Satya Prasad have been appointed as Additional Advocate-Generals for Andhra Pradesh.

It may be recalled that the Government has recently appointed DV Seetarama Murthy as the new Advocate-General of Andhra Pradesh with effect from June 8.

He took charge as AG after his predecessor CV Mohan Reddy stepped down.

The Government would issue separate orders in respect of payment of honorarium/fee and other allowances to the two additional AGs.

Cases registered against TRS leaders

Hyderabad, June 16: Cases under SC/ST Atrocities (Prevention) Act and other Sections of the IPC have been registered against TRS leaders Karne Prabhakar and Rammohan basing on a complaint lodged by Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) leader and former MP Ravindra Naik. The TRS leaders also filed a complaints against Ravindra Naik and his followers under similar Sections.

Mamata demands combing operations to seize illegal arms

Kolkata, June 16: Close on the heels of the recovery of a huge quantity of arms and ammunition from the houses of CPI(M) leaders at Khejuri in East Midnapore district, Trinamool Congress president Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday demanded combing operations to unearth illegal arms in the state.

“Arms and ammunition have been found at Khejuri. It is a serious matter. We demand immediate combing operations for seizure of arms from all, irrespective of party affiliations, otherwise the country’s internal security would be under threat,” Banerjee, Union Railways Minister told reporters here.
