Resolution would have been defeated by 225 votes

Hyderabad, August 07: Vijayawada MP Lagadapati Rajagopal said that if a resolution favouring separate Telangana was introduced in the Assembly following the statement by Union home minister P Chidambaram, it would have been defeated by a 225-vote majority.

When justice Srikrishna asked about the Assembly adopting a resolution after Chidambaram’s statement in December last year, Rajagopal said it would have been defeated by 225 votes. He pointed out that the powers to adopt a resolution were cancelled to states through the Constitution.

President to inaugurate Rs.30 crore prayer hall in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, August 07: President Pratibha Patil will Friday inaugurate what is believed to be the costliest prayer hall in Kerala and probably one of the fanciest in the country that was built at a cost of Rs 30 crore. It is shaped like a white lotus and will be unveiled at the Santhigiri Ashram near here.

Swami Jana Nanma Jnana Thapaswi Saturday told reporters here that the 91-foot-high lotus-shaped hall named as ‘Parnasala’ is dedicated to Navajyothisree Karunakara Guru, the Ashram’s late founder.

Senior official of PNB found dead

Uttar Pradesh, August 07: A senior official of Punjab National Bank (PNB) was found dead in a hotel room in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly district.

Kulbhushan Sharma (48), chief auditor of PNB, was found dead late Friday inside the Tea Rose hotel in Bareilly. The police found the body after hotel staff called them up as Sharma was not responding to the doorbell.

Sharma, who had a touring job and primarily looked after the work of two branches of the PNB in Bareilly, was a resident of Delhi. During his stay in Bareilly, he used to reside in hotels.

New Delhi, August 07: Home Minister P. Chidambaram on Saturday said that financial aid of nearly Rs.14, 000 crore would be approved for Maoist-affected districts for integrated development.

The home minister also hinted at a change in the manner in which the central government released money for development programmes to the states affected by Maoist insurgency.

India’s genuine approach under-valued by Pak: Rao

Pakistan, August 07: The Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao on Saturday, when asked about the future of the India-Pakistan talks, said that the dust needs to settle.

In an interview to a magazine, the foreign secretary Rao said that India’s “genuine, carefully formulated and reasonable approach to these talks” should not be “under-estimated and under-valued by Pakistan”.

Recognise Kashmir as dispute: Geelani

Srinagar, August 07: The Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Saturday rejected the dialogue offer by the government, saying that the group will not enter into any talks with the Centre unless the Kashmir is recognised as dispute and withdraws army from the state.

However, he said, “If this is done, then a dialogue could be held to discuss the technicalities of implementing UN resolutions”.

Geelani called the talks offer as conspiracy to discredit him.

10 killed in Afghan attack

Afghanistan, August 07: About ten people including six Americans, one German and one British national on a medical mission were killed by militants in northeastern Afghanistan.

Badakhshan police chief Agha Noor Kentooz said that Afghan police found the bullet-riddled bodies of eight foreigners and two of their Afghan colleagues in a remote mountainous area between Nuristan and Badakhshan provinces on Friday.

RBI may go for another rate hike

Hyderabad, August 07: Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council (PMEAC) Chairman Dr C Rangarajan told on Saturday that if inflation levels do not come down in the next four weeks, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) may go for a rate hike in its September quarterly review of the monetary policy.

The RBI in the last review meet in June raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.75 per cent and the reverse repo rate by 50 basis points to 4.5 per cent.

Bihar court summons Raj Thackeray

Darbhanga, August 07: A Bihar court on Saturday summoned MNS chief Raj Thackeray for clarifying his position in connection with a complaint against the latter’s alleged provocative statement against migrants from northern India in Mumbai in 2008.

Darbhanga district Judge Sushil Kumar ordered the issue of summon to Thackeray asking him to present his side in the court by September 3. “Thackeray can appear in the court in person or through his lawyer to explain the position,” Kumar ordered.

Major security breach foiled in BARC

Mumbai, August 07: A major security breach – the second in the past nine months – was foiled at the high-security Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) when security personnel and police nabbed seven people who attempted to secure class IV jobs there using forged documents and the man who arranged their “recruitment”.

Police inspector S.G. Mullemwar of Tarapur Police Station Saturday said that there was “no security threat of any kind to the BARC,” and there was no involvement of any officials from within the country’s premier atomic complex.

Geelani rejects Centre’s dialogue offer

Srinagar, August 07: Hardline Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who recently came out against violence in Kashmir, today rejected the Centre’s dialogue offer.

“I strongly reject the talks offer…. We will not enter into a dialogue with New Delhi, quiet or open, unless India recognises Kashmir as dispute and agrees to complete withdrawal of army from the state,” the separatist leader told reporters here.

However, he said, “If this is done, then a dialogue could be held to discuss the technicalities of implementing UN resolutions”.

People living in East Godavari in AP issued warning

Rajahmundry (AP), August 07: As water level in Godavari river crossed danger mark today, the local authorities have issued warning to residents living near the river bank in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh.

The water level at Dowleswarm has been on the rise for the past two days with heavy rains lashing the district, Flood Control Officer and Senior Engineer, V Venugopal said.

“The water level is likely to increase further by night.

We are monitoring the situation and taking all precautions.

Colombo, August 07: Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara feels that the hosts were a better side despite sharing the three-match cricket Test series 1-1 with India here Saturday.

“We scored more runs, took more wickets and created more opportunities as compared to India. But we could not make the most of the opportunities in the last two tests. It was the only way India could get back in the series,” Sangakkara said.

Sri Lanka won the first Test by 10 wickets and India came back strongly in the second to draw it. The visitors won the third and the final Test to level the series 1-1.

BJP to take out ‘Nyaya March’ on August 13

Lucknow, August 07: The BJP today decided to launch a state-wide agitation against ‘anti-people’ policies of the Centre and BSP government in Uttar Pradesh, a party spokesman said here.

In the first phase of the agitation the party has decided to take out ‘Nyaya March’ on August 13 to protest against CBI’s alleged conspiracy against Gujarat government and misuse of the agency by the Congress, he said.

Blast in Assam market, no casualty

Goalpara, August 07: Unidentified extremists Friday exploded a bomb in a market close to the SP office here, officials said.

However, no one was injured as the market was closed at 8.00 pm, they said.

The blast took place at 10.50 pm at Bapuji Nagar market and about 50 mts away from the office of the Superintendent of Police.

Though there is no specific information about the outfit behind the blast, both ULFA and NDFB are active in the area, police said.

Govt to clear integrated action plan for Naxal-hit districts soon

New Delhi, August 07: The government will soon approve an integrated action plan, including a financial aid of Rs 13,742 crore, for infrastructural development in Naxal-hit districts in the country.

The plan spread over a period of three years will aim at development of infrastructure and facilities like drinking water, electricity, roads, sanitation and health services.

Besides, it will envisage continuous efforts to improve governance like implementation of Panchayats Extension (to Schedule Areas) Act of 1996 (PESA) so as to give the tribals the right to use minor forest produce.

Current account deficit likely to be 2.7 percent of GDP: Rangarajan

Hyderabad, August 07: India’s current account deficit this fiscal is expected to be 2.7 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP) and capital inflows are likely to be around $73 billion, said C. Rangarajan, chairman of prime minister’s economic advisory council, Saturday.

“This (capital inflows) will go to cover the current account deficit and add to reserves of a modest sum of $31 billion. Thus, with a moderate surplus on the capital account after meeting the current account deficit, the exchange rate variations will stay within an acceptable range,” he said.

US offers two drones to Pak military

Islamabad, August 07: The US has offered the Pakistani military two drone surveillance systems to help improve its reconnaissance capability.

The ScanEagle and Shadow unmanned aerial vehicle systems have been offered to Pakistan, US Under Secretary of Defence Michele Flournoy said briefing a group of journalists at the US embassy here after a meeting of the bilateral Defence Consultative Group.

Pakistan had made a request for surveillance systems to reinforce its counter-insurgency efforts.
