Azad reviews swine flu situation

New Delhi, August 11: With a resurgence in cases of swine flu this monsoon, Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today reviewed the situation in various states and asked them to ensure vaccination of people at risk.

Azad held a meeting with Health Secretary Sujatha Rao, ICMR Director General V M Katoch, Director General of Health Services R K Srivastava and Drug Controller General of India Surinder Singh.

He also spoke with the Chief Ministers of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Orissa and Delhi.

Sushma for Parliamentary resolution on Bhopal

New Delhi, August 11: Pressing for higher compensation for the victims of the Bhopal gas disaster, Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj on Wednesday suggested that parliament pass a unanimous resolution to scrap the 1989 “out of court settlement” between the Indian government and Union Carbide.

“The house, cutting across party lines, should pass a resolution to scrap the 1989 agreement,” Swaraj said in the Lok Sabha, attacking the then government for reaching an out of court settlement with the Union Carbide Corporation for Rs.615 crore.

Order financial audit into Chiru Blood Bank: Allu to CM

Hyderabad, August 11: Managing Trustee of the Chiranjeevi Charitable Trust Allu Aravind on Wednesday requested the state government to order a financial audit in the activities of the Chiranjeevi Blood Bank so that the allegations raised against it are put at rest.

Mr Aravind’s request came in the form of a letter addressed to Chief Minister K Rosaiah, in which he said that the allegations raised by some ‘vested interests’ have hurt the feelings of lakhs of Praja Rajyam Party president K Chiranjeevi’s fans.

Southern states to improve anti-terror coordination

Hyderabad, August 11: The police chiefs of five southern states Wednesday decided to improve coordination, information and intelligence sharing to effectively tackle crime, terrorism and Maoist violence.

The directors general of police (DGPs) of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Puducherry and officers from crime investigation departments and intelligence wings met here and discussed an action plan to deal with the new challenges posed by organised criminals, cyber crime and counterfeit currency.

New Delhi, August 11: The issue of Sohrabuddin fake encounter in Gujarat was the focus of attention for sometime during a debate in the Lok Sabha today on the Bhopal gas tragedy, with BJP and Congress seeking to score points over each other.

Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj, who initiated the discussion, alleged that the CBI had arrested Shah for the killing involving a terrorist, who had been a convict of TADA and was found in possession of 28 AK-47 and two AK-56 rifles.

Mahathir backs English teaching in Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur, August 11: Former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad has strongly backed the continuance of English language teaching in Malaysia, saying this “will not make us less patriotic.”

He has joined the ongoing debate on the usage of the language of the country’s onetime British rulers in present-day education.

“People should accept the fact that English is currently the language of knowledge,” The Star Wednesday quoted him as saying.

He said the Internet came with various languages but English was still the main language on websites.

Riyadh, August 11: Muslims around the world could be setting their watches to a new time soon when the world’s largest clock begins ticking atop a soaring skyscraper in Islam’s holiest city of Mecca.

Saudi Arabia hopes the four faces of the new clock, which will loom over Mecca’s Grand Mosque from what is expected to be the world’s second tallest building, will establish Mecca as an alternate time standard to the Greenwich meridian.

CA experiments with split-innings in one-dayer

Melbourne, August 11: Cricket Australia has tried out the split-innings format in one-dayer for the first time in a practice match between South Australian Redbacks and Tasmanian Tigers at the Marrara Oval in Darwin.

Blast kills 8 soldiers in central Iraq

Baghdad, August 11: A bomb explosion has targeted a house in the province of Diyala in central Iraq, killing eight army soldiers on their quest for militants on the run.

The blast occurred at around 5:00 a.m. (0200 GMT) on Wednesday in the town of Saadiyah, 100 kilometers (65 miles) northeast of Baghdad, AFP reported.

Militants detonated the house after a number of gunmen lured the soldiers to the house following clashes at a security checkpoint.

The incident also left four other soldiers wounded.

Security neglect at Lumbini Park

Hyderabad, August 11: Lumbini Park seems to have been caught in a time-warp. The popular amusement park which witnessed a terror attack in August 2007 killing nearly 30 people, still remains a risky proposition as the security apparatus in the premises are defunct.

Security at Lumbini Park located in the middle of the city on the banks of the Hussain Sagar and opposite to the high-security State Secretariat, is in a state of neglect.

5 dead in cracker blast

Eluru, August 11: Five persons, including three women, died and three others were injured in a cracker blast at Peddayellamilli village in Ungutur mandal on Tuesday.

The blast occurred while crackers were being manufactured in the house of a certain D Kistaiah.

The dead were identified as Kistaiah (60), P Venkata Narayana (30), N Hemalatha (35), D Satyavathi and A Sri Vidya (10). Four houses were also partially damaged due to the impact of the blast. The bodies were shifted to Tadepalligudem government hospital for autopsy.

Islamabad, August 11: Though declared a proclaimed offender by a top court, elaborate security measures are being put in place at former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf’s farmhouse in the city outskirts in anticipation of his return home following launching of his political party.

Musharraf, who turns 67 today, and now in self-imposed exile in London will formally initiate his political activities after the holy month of Ramadan, his close aide Fawad Chaudhry was quoted as saying by ‘The News’.

Al Qaeda threatens to topple Saudi government

Sana’a, August 11: Terror outfit Al Qaeda’s Yemeni wing has threatened to overthrow the Saudi government “for its participation in the US-led crusade against Islam”.

This message was delivered by Saeed Ali al-Shihri, deputy leader of the Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), in an audio recording posted on the internet, Xinhua reported Wednesday.

“Some members of the Saudi government’s army requested us to give them orders on whether to stay in their jobs or go to Yemen to join Al Qaeda’s camps,” al-Shihri said in the message.

Hyderabad, August 11 (Siasat News): The immigration staff of the Shamshabad airport handed over a traveler to the RGI police on his attempt to travel on a fake passport.

According to the police G Satish, 27, and native of east Godavari, had obtained a passport from Vishakhapatnam in 2001 and went to Saudi Arabia in 2003 as an electrician.

No replacement for injured Gul: Yawar

Karachi, August 11: The Pakistan team management in England has decided against calling up a replacement bowler for the injured Umar Gul who suffered a hamstring injury during the second Test against the hosts on Sunday.

Pakistan lost the second Test by nine wickets at Edgbaston to trail in the four-match series 0-2 but the team manager Yawar Saeed insisted there would be no replacement for Gul.

“We have two back up pace bowlers Tanvir Ahmed and Wahab Riaz in the touring squad and either one of them can replace Gul for the remaining Tests,” Yawar said.

Malik not to get PCB’s central contract soon

Lahore, August 11: Disappointed over Shoaib Malik’s performance after his return to the national fold, Pakistan Cricket Board has virtually ruled out any chances of giving a central contract to the former captain.

Malik was not awarded a central contract earlier this year by the Board since he was banned and fined with six other players for indiscipline and misconduct on their tour to Australia.

“I don’t think Malik will get the central contract now for this year as he has failed to impress even the selectors with his performances in England,” one source in the Board told PTI.
