World’s longest catwalk at Denmark fashion week

Copenhagen, August 15: About 250 fashion models sashayed designers clothes and accessories on the world’s longest catwalk of about a mile at Copenhagen Fashion Week.

The 1,609-metre long catwalk held Saturday at Copenhagen’s popular shopping street Stroget was the biggest event during the ongoing fashion festival, Xinhua reported.

With Danish model Helena Christensen starting things off, the models strutted on a giant pink carpet, presenting the collections of Scandinavia’s top fashion labels.

Pakistani fugitive held in Italy

Italy, August 15: A Pakistani fugitive who had been on the run since 2006 after being sentenced to 14 years imprisonment for drug and human trafficking has been arrested in Italy.

A court in Gujranwala in Pakistan’s eastern Punjab province in November 2006 issued an international arrest warrant against Mazhar Iqbal Butter after convicting him of being part of a gang in Pakistan which trafficked migrants to western Europe via Iran, Turkey and Greece.

Four killed in US shooting

New York, August 15: Four people, including two women, were killed and equal number of people injured in a shooting spree at a restaurant in the US Saturday, police said.

Keith Johnson, 25, has been charged with four counts of second-degree murder. Further charges are pending, local news website buffalonews.com reported.

The incident occurred outside the popular Main Street restaurant in the heart of the downtown Buffalo business district, where several parties, including a wedding anniversary, were being. Eight people were shot in the incident.

China mourns mudslide victims with half-mast flags

Beijing, August 15: Thousands of Chinese hoisted their national flag half-mast at Beijing’s Tian’anmen Square Sunday to mourn the death of over 12,000 people and misery of thousands others in the wake of the massive mudslides in the country.

A flag at half-mast is also seen at Xinhuamen, the main entrance of Zhongnanhai, the headquarters of the Communist Party of China and the central government, as part of the one-day national mourning announced by the State Council, Xinhua reported.

Russia stops foodgrain exports

Moscoow, August 15: Russia has stopped the exports of foodgrains till the end of this year to cope up with the loss of agricultural harvest due to scorching heat wave and draught.

The ban on export which came into force Sunday will remain until the end of this year. However, the government may revise the ban after October 1, when the size of the harvest volumes becomes clearer.

Hyderabad, August 15: A land deal struck by the Andhra government under former CM Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy with Emaar Properties has kicked up a major political controversy in the wake of his son Jaganmohan Reddy’s revolt against the Congress high command.

RSS alleges ‘Islamisation’ of Kashmir

New Delhi, August 15: The Sangh Parivar fountainhead RSS has alleged that separatist forces and elements across the border were actively involved in “Islamisation” of Kashmir through covert means.

“The Islamisation of Kashmir is a dangerous game. This was on for the last two decades. First they started changing the names of places and signboards. They they imposed a ban on cinema halls, beauty parlours, restaurants and fashion shops. They asked their women to wear veil even in schools and offices,” RSS mouthpiece Organiser states in its latest issue.

Electronic voting machines are foolproof: SY Quraishi

New Delhi, August 15: Chief Election Commissioner SY Quraishi today batted for use of electronic voting machines (EVMs) during elections, calling them “tamper-proof” despite concerns of some political parties over its unreliability.

Quraishi, who has been holding consultations with political parties in this regard since taking over early this month, said the Election Commission (EC) was 100% certain that the EVMs were “tamper-proof and reliable” as they were designed that way.

60,000 cops stand guard on I-Day

New Delhi, August 15: The capital specially the Old Delhi area turned into a fortress with over 60,000 gun-toting security personnel taking up position on Delhi’s streets. They are remaining vigilant to stop any terrorist attacks on the eve of Independence Day. Heavy rain notwithstanding, the men were told to take up their positions by midnight.

Lebanese Army kills two Al Qaeda-linked militants

Beirut, August 15: Lebanese Army troops Saturday killed two militants loyal to Al Qaeda in eastern Lebanon, security sources said.

The two men were a part of Fatah al-Islam, a fundamentalist Palestinian group that follows the ideology of Al Qaeda, and that fought pitched battles with the Lebanese Army in the Palestinian refugee camp of Nahr al Bared in 2007 in northern Lebanon.

‘Abdul Rahman Awadh, one of the key leaders of Fatah al-Islam, was killed along with another militant known as Abu Bakr in an ambush by the Lebanese Army in the eastern Bekaa Valley,’ a security source said.

Hyderabad, August 15: Civil Supplies Minister Jupalli Krishna Rao and Congress MP Manda Jagannadham on Saturday demanded the strictest possible action against the miscreants who had damaged the sluice plates of Rajolibanda Diversion Scheme, on Saturday.

Bodyguard’s gun goes off, one injured

Prakasam, August 15: At least one person was injured when the gun of a Congress MLA’s body guard went off accidently on Saturday.

According to police, the incident occurred when the body guard of Congress MLA A Suresh was cleaning his licensed weapon at the Samuel George College, Markapuram.

The bullet left a college canteen worker injured. He was rushed to hospital where his condition is reported to be stable.

Madani moves K’taka high court to evade arrest

Kollam, August 15: Peoples Democratic Party leader and accused in the 2008 Bangalore blast case Abdul Nasser Madani has filed a petition in the Karnataka High Court on Friday, seeking quashing of the charge sheet against him.

Although prohibitory orders were clamped in and around a religious centre in Kollam district in view of Madani’s imminent arrest after August 15, his lawyer P. Usman said, “It is (the petition) likely to come up for consideration either on August 16 or 17.”

Come for talks, Pratibha tells Maoists

New Delhi, August 15: President Pratibha Patil called upon Maoists and other extremist groups to eschew violence and urged civil society to encourage them to join the national mainstream.

In an address to the nation on the eve of the 64 {+t} {+h} Independence Day, she said, “proponents of extreme ideologies and the followers of Left Wing Extremism must abandon their path of violence. I call on them to join [the] national efforts for growth and development. I hope that everybody, including the civic society, will come forward and move them in this direction.”

The decision to narrow the ambit of EOC was taken by a group of ministers headed by Defence Minister A K Antony here on 12th August.

No weddings in MCD community halls

Mumbai, August 15: To the shock of hosts of 400 wedding parties, scheduled between Aug 15 and Oct 15 in Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s (MCD) community halls, the civic agency has decided hand over these building to house security personnel on Commonwealth Games duty.

The civic agency made about 400 bookings for weddings between Aug 15 and Oct 15 in its 60 community halls.

Now, during this period, the agency has decided to reserve these halls for accommodation of officials of Sports Authority of India and paramilitary forces who will guard the capital during the Games.

Heavy rain lashes Capital

New Delhi, August 15: Commuters had a harrowing time on Delhi roads Saturday as intermittent heavy rains led to water-logging, resulting in traffic snarls and breakdown of vehicles in many areas. The Met office forecast more showers on Sunday.

Flooding in low-lying areas, traffic snarls and an incident of building collapse were reported from various parts of the city.

The traffic snarls in various parts of Delhi, especially in the evening, exposed the poor preparedness of civic authorities in handling flooding due to rains.

Rahul to restart UP march

Uttar Pradesh, August 15: After a lull, Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi is all set to launch the second phase of his “Mission 2012”, aimed at revival of the party in Uttar Pradesh.

The charismatic Gandhi scion who undertook padyatras and addressed rallies during April and May, would restart the exercise from Oct 2.

While the last rally was addressed by Rahul Gandhi in Ambedkar Nagar town in eastern Uttar Pradesh, the new destination would be somewhere in the western part of the state.

Government will recruit 50,000 youths: Omar

Srinagar, August 15: The Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah on Saturday announced that his government will recruit 50,000 youths in the next few months and pitched for restoration of autonomy to the state to bridge the “trust deficit” between the people and the Centre.

The Chief Minister said people in Jammu and Kashmir have cynicism about the promises made by the Centre in the past and there is a need for the central government to initiate action to remove all doubts from the minds of the people and bridge the gap that has emerged over the last six decades.

In Delhi metro parking has been made out of bounds for the public from 1400 hours on 14th August to 1400 hours of August 15th.There is an overall preparedness on the part of Delhi police to combat any situation arising out of terror threat.Patrolling has been stepped up and checking on boarders have been intensified.

Alleged Israeli agent free on bail in Germany

Germany, August 14: A German court released on bail Friday an alleged Israeli agent suspected of links to the January killing of a Hamas leader, saying he may now return home as he is only facing a fine.

Polish authorities, who had arrested Uri Brodsky in June at Warsaw airport on suspicion of obtaining a German passport under false pretences, had extradited him to Germany Thursday.
