Krishna water pipeline damaged accidently

Hyderabad, August 18: Areas around the Uppal Crossroads near Survey of India Junction were inundated after a lorry damaged a pipeline supplying water to Moula Ali and Tarnaka areas from the river Krishna.

According to HMWSSB officials, the pipeline carries around 33 million gallons of water for the needs of people of Moula Ali and Tarnaka. It was damaged when the driver of a water tanker lost control over his vehicle and rammed it into the pipeline on Wednesday.

The water gushed onto the roads and has inundated the surrounding areas, to the extent that it has entered some houses.

announced its decision to launch a state-wide agitation against the

India to answer Pakistan’s questions on Headley

New Delhi, August 18: India will soon send answers to the 51 questions posed by Pakistan about 26/11 Mumbai terror attack accused David Coleman Headley, now in custody in the United States, a home ministry official said Wednesday.

“The Pakistani questions appear to be an attempt to divert attention and to delay the legal proceedings against Headley’s associate (and Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba founder) Hafiz Saeed in the Mumbai terror trial (that is currently underway in Pakistan),” the official, who declined to be identified, told IANS.

Satyam’s Ramalinga Raju secures bail

Hyderabad, August 18: Satyam Computer’s tainted founder B Ramalinga Raju today secured bail from the Andhra Pradesh High Court, over 17 months after his arrest on charges of allegedly fudging the IT company’s accounts.

Raju, who was arrested on January 7 last year and is currently undergoing treatment in a city hospital, was granted bail on the condition he stay in Hyderabad and on provision of two sureties of Rs 20 lakhs each.

Cop helps woman in delivery

Moscow, August 18: A policeman in Russia turned a doctor when he helped a woman give birth at a checkpoint, a police spokeswoman said Wednesday.

A pregnant woman from the village of Kornilovka in Russia’s Far East was on her way to a hospital when labour pains began prematurely and she was not able to reach the destination on time. Her friend, who was driving the car, stopped at a police checkpoint where the policeman, himself a father of two, immediately began helping the pregnant woman.

Madani remanded in police custody till August 26

Bangalore, August 18: PDP leader Abdul Nasser Madani has been remanded in police custody till August 26 by a magistrate here in connection with the 2008 Bangalore serial blast case.

After his arrest in Kollam by Karnataka Police, Madani was flown in here Tuesday night and produced before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Venkatesh R Hulagi at his residence.

The court granted custody on conditions that he be allowed to perform all religious rituals during Ramzan and avail all medical facilities any time he so desires.

Beijing, August 18: Chinese artists are creating a 30-metre-tall sculpture of Bruce Lee which they hope will one day become a landmark on the scale of the Statue of Liberty in New York.

The red-painted ceramic statue being made by sculptors in Foshan city in Guangdong province that bills itself as the home of Chinese kung fu, depicts an eight-legged Bruce Lee, known as Li Xiaolong in Chinese, balancing world famous monuments on each foot, China Daily reported Wednesday.

UN secures half of funds required for flooded Pakistan

Islamabad, August 18: The UN said Wednesday that it has secured almost half of the $460 million it requires in emergency assistance for flood victims in Pakistan.

“We have received $208 million and that makes 42.5 percent of the funds initially required,” Maurizio Giuliano, a spokesman of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Pakistan, told DPA.

“In addition to that we have some pledges and that makes the total funds secured at 54.5 percent,” added Giuliano. “It is definitely an improvement in the situation.”

Trial in Babri demolition to begin from Monday

Lucknow, August 18: Eighteen years after the 16th century Babri Mosque was pulled down by violent Hindu mobs in the ancient temple town of Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh, a special court here will commence the formal trial in the case from Monday.

This follows framing of charges against 23 accused by special court judge V.K. Tyagi Tuesday, a court official said.

Anwar loses bid to strike out sodomy charges

Kuala Lumpur, August 18: Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim on Monday lost a bid to have sodomy charges against him struck out over claims of an affair between his young accuser and a female prosecutor.

High Court Judge Mohamad Zabidin Diah refused the request, saying there was no proof of the defence argument that 25-year-old Saiful Bukhari Azlan could have been passed confidential trial information by the junior prosecutor.

Washington, August 18: A former Illinois governor has been convicted of lying to US federal agents in a case involving his attempt to sell Barack Obama’s vacated senate seat after winning the 2008 presidential election.

After two weeks of deliberations, jurors in Chicago found Rod Blagojevich guilty on Tuesday of a single criminal offense of making false statements to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

The verdict carries a maximum five-year jail sentence and is considered one of the least severe offenses among the original 24 criminal counts filed against him.

Behind bars but JD-U legislator still enjoys minister status

Patna, August 18: A legislator from Bihar’s ruling Janata Dal-United (JD-U), sentenced to life imprisonment for killing a minister, enjoys the status of minister as head of the assembly housing committee, officials said.

Vijay Kumar Shukla alias Munna Shukla, currently in jail, is chairman of the Bihar Vidhansabha Awas Samiti, a post accorded the status of a minister, an official in the state assembly told IANS.

A local court had last year sentenced Shukla to life imprisonment in the sensational murder case of former Bihar minister Brij Bihari Prasad June 13, 1998.
