Govt gave 6,500 tons of urea to YSR’s brother in law: Babu

Hyderabad, September 13: The TDP chief, Mr. N. Chandrababu Naidu, has alleged that while it was unable to provide fertilizers to the poor farmers, it had given away 6,500 metric tons of urea to Mr Ravindranath Reddy, Mayor of Kadapa and brother-in-law of late chief minister Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy.

Talking to the media here on Sunday, the former Chief Minister said that he would stage a dharna at the district collectorate to protest against the supply of urea to the Congress leader.

Pak All-Rounder Abdul Razzaq To Undergo MRI scan

London, September 13: Pakistan all-rounder Abdul Razzaq is set to undergo an MRI scan for his back injury.

Pakistan team manager Yawar Saeed told The Associated Press on Sunday he expects Razzaq “will need the MRI so we can see what the problem is.”

Razzaq is a leading member of Pakistan’s squad. He has missed two one-day internationals against England so far, including the four-wicket defeat on Sunday at Headingley. Pakistan trails 2-0 in the five-match series.

2/3rd in Indian Kashmir want independence: poll

Srinagar, September 13: About two thirds of residents in India-administered Kashmir want independence for their region, with less than one in ten seeking a merger with Pakistan, a survey showed Sunday.

The Kashmiri region is administered separately by India and Pakistan, with the Indian part subject to an insurgency and violent separatist movement for the last 20 years that has claimed an estimated 47,000 lives.

Govt must release white paper on ORR: Harish Rao

Hyderabad, September 13: The Telangana Rashtra Samithi senior leader and MLA, Mr T Harish Rao, on Sunday, demanded that the State government release a white paper on the compensation paid to the displaced farmers in the construction of Outer Ring Road project.

No match-fixing in IPL, says Warne

Melbourne, September 13: Cricket Australia on Monday refuted reports that two of its players were under the International Cricket Council’s scanner for suspected involvement in match-fixing during the Indian Premier League’s second season last year.

CA’s rebuttal came after British newspaper The Times reported that of the 29 players cited by the ICC’s anti-corruption and security unit for
suspected involvement in match or spot-fixing, it was “thought there are two Australians” on the list.

The protesters also pointed out some of the Quran passages, which describe hatred against Christians and Jews.

‘Mexico most dangerous country for journalists’

Vienna, September 13: A total of 52 journalists were killed across the world this year, with Mexico being ranked the most dangerous country for media persons, press freedom watchdog International Press Institute (IPI) has said.

“In the first eight months of 2010, 52 journalists were killed because of their work. That’s only four fewer than in the same period last year and it’s 52 too many,” said Alison Bethel McKenzie, interim director of the IPI.

Girls in orphanage suffer sexual abuse‎

Hyderabad, September 13: In yet another case of sexual exploitation of girl children, a person running an orphanage home at Vanasthalipuram was accused of sexually abusing some girl inmates.

According to police, 37-year-old Malyadri runs the Siria orphanage home-cum-residential school near the Ganesh temple, a stone’s throw away from the Vanasthalipuram police station.

Nearly 130 orphans, both male and female, live there and classes from nursery to standard IX are conducted there.

Maoists blow up rail tracks in Jharkhand

Ranchi, September 13: Maoist guerrillas early Monday blew up rail tracks in Jharkhand’s Giridih district, affecting services of over 30 trains, a railway official said.

“Maoist rebels blew up railway tracks near Karmabandh at 1.50 a.m. Monday. The blast affected the services of more than 30 trains, including three Rajdhani express trains,” Amrendra Das, public relations officer (PRO) of the Dhanbad railway division, told IANS.

He said the damaged tracks are being repaired.

Ahmedabad, September 13: Taking a swipe at Union Home Minister P Chidambaram for his ”saffron terror” comment, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today asked him to describe the “colour of terrorism in the Kashmir valley”. “Now, even terrorism has different colours, as per our Home Minister Chidambaram,” Modi said while addressing a seminar organised by the BJP Youth Wing here.

“I would like to ask him what would be the colour of terrorism faced by the people of Kashmir. What would be colour of violence faced by thousands of Kashmiri pandits,” Modi asked.

I’m a Brahmin, don’t tell me about cow protection: Bhardwaj

Bangalore, September 12: In a rare instance of a constitutional authority referring to his caste to hit back at critics, Karnataka Governor H.R. Bhardwaj Sunday told the state’s BJP government that he was Brahmin and didn’t need to be told about cow protection.

“I am a Brahmin. I need not learn from anybody about cow protection,” Bhardwaj said, slamming Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ministers attacking him for not giving his assent to a bill banning cow slaughter and forwarding it to President Pratibha Patil for a decision.

Remove Omar Abdullah; No dilution in AFSPA, says BJP

New Delhi, September 12: On the eve of the crucial meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security on Kashmir, BJP today demanded the removal of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, saying his government has “completely collapsed” and warned that any dilution of AFSPA would only allow the separatists and miscreants to call the shots.

Top BJP leaders, who met at L K Advani’s residence here, said, “it is time he (Abdullah)is replaced by a more acceptable person.” An unpopular Chief Minister suffers a complete alienation from his people, it said.

New Delhi, September 12: A day before the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meets to discuss the Kashmir situation, Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umer Farooq Sunday said the mere withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFPSA) from certain areas won’t do and that more “serious measures” were required.

Madurai, September 12: The manifold increase in air passenger traffic in recent years reflected not only growth in aviation sector but also profile of those travelling by air, Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said today.

“Air travel is no more a rich man’s prerogative. Now people from different categories are travelling by air. It is transporting a larger section of people and its importance in transport of cargo has increased tremendously,” he said at the inaugural of the Rs 130-crore new terminal building of the airport here.

Newborn baby left in airplane bin in Philippines

Manila, September 12: A newborn baby boy was found Sunday in a rubbish bag removed from a plane that landed in the Philippines from the Middle East, airport officials said.

The baby was wrapped in tissue and still covered in blood when cleaners found him, said Maria Teresa Agores, a medical officer at Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport said.

The garbage bag came from one of the toilets of a Gulf Air flight that arrived in Manila from Bahrain.

Airport security officer Tristan Dimaano said he noticed something moving inside the garbage bag.

Kalmadi backs Rahman, says theme song will slowly catch on

New Delhi, September 12: Commonwealth Games Organising Committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi has reposed faith in Oscar winning composer A.R Rahman’s theme song for the Games that has been widely panned for being uninspiring.

Kalmadi, however, neither confirmed nor denied reports that Rahman will further tweak the song to make it more lively.

“Rahman is a great artist and we are aware of his credentials. He has won many international awards. I am very happy with the song.”

Delhi records 17.3 mm of rainfall

New Delhi, September 12: Delhiites were greeted by a wet day today as the city recorded 17.3 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours.

The heavy rain also resulted in a decline in the mercury levels.

The minimum temperature was recorded at 24.8 degrees Celsius, almost two notches below yesterday’s 26.7 degrees.

The day remained stuffy and the maximum and minimum humidity levels were recorded at 95 and 81 per cent respectively.

President commutes 14 death sentences into life terms

New Delhi, September 12: President Pratibha Devisingh Patil has commuted the death sentence of 14 people by allowing their mercy petitions during the past two months.

Home Ministry sources said those allowed to escape the gallows include Pyara Singh and his three sons Sarabjit Singh, Satnam Singh and Gurdev Singh who went on a killing spree and butchered 17 people due to personal enmity.

Their mercy petitions were pending since 1991.

In another case, R Govindswami of Tamil Nadu who killed five people including three small children has also been shown mercy by the President.

September holds special significance for Advani

New Delhi, September 12: September holds special significance for senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani. He left his birthplace Karachi this month 63 years ago, embarked on his rath yatra from Somnath to Ayodhya this month 20 years back, and it is on Sep 24 that a court will give its verdict on the Ayodhya title suits, he writes in his blog.

In his post titled “The importance of September”, Advani says that the Allahabad High Court announced last week that the bench considering the title suits relating to the Ayodhya dispute will pronounce its verdict Sep 24.
