Talks with Telangana lawyers inconclusive

Hyderabad, September 18: The stalemate over the demand for 42 per cent share in law officers’ posts for Telangana region among others continued as the talks between the Andhra Pradesh government and agitating lawyers remained inconclusive tonight.

The lawyers, who came forward for talks with the Cabinet sub-committee looking into appointment of law officers with the mediation of Congress MPs G Vivekanand and Madhu Goud Yashki, placed three main demands before the government.

Telangana celebrates ‘Liberation Day’

Hyderabad, September 18: The Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh Friday celebrated “liberation day” amid tension at some places.

Police chased and arrested activists of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) here when they tried to barge into the state assembly building to unfurl the national flag.

Advani meets Sohrabuddin fake encounter case accuse

New Delhi,September 18:Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader L.K. Advani on Saturday met Gujarat ex-Minister Amit Shah, an accused in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter killing case, in Sabarmati Jail.

Mr. Advani, along with State BJP in-charge Balbir Punj, went to the Sabarmati Jail and met Mr. Shah.

The two leaders later went to Mr. Shah’s residence in Naranpura area to meet his family members.

Advani meets Amit Shah in Sabarmati jail

Ahmedabad, September 18: Senior BJP leader L K Advani today met former Gujarat minister Amit Shah, an accused in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter killing case, in Sabarmati jail. Advani, along with state BJP in-charge Balbir Punj, went to Sabarmati jail and met Shah.

The two leaders later went to Shah”s residence in Naranpura area to meet his family members. “The Centre is using CBI as a tool to defame our government which is absolutely incorrect.

‘Two Iranian hostages freed’

Tehran, September 18: Two Iranian people kidnapped in the country’s southeastern Sistan-Baluchestan Province several days ago have been released, an Interior Ministry official says.

The two were taken hostage near the town of Sarbaz were freed Friday night by Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) troops, Iran’s Deputy Interior Minister for Security and Law Enforcement Affairs Ali Abdollahi told Mehr News Agency on Saturday.

Two more letter threats to Jaya

Chennai, September 18: AIADMK-backed Jaya TV today said it had received two more letters threatening the life of party chief Jayalalithaa and asked police to provide security to her and the channel. One letter warned of bomb strikes on Kodanadu estate, her retreat in hilly Nilgiris district, and the other threatened that she would “not return home” if she went ahead with her proposed public meeting in Madurai next month.

Ayodhya verdict: NBA issues guidelines to broadcasters

New Delhi, September 18: As the Ayodhya title suit verdict date nears, the News Broadcasters Association has set guidelines for electronic media asking them not to speculate about the judgement and not to show the footage of 1992 Babri Masjid demolition.

The guidelines say that the Ayodhya issue is a matter in which “extra care” is necessary to ensure that the telecast of any news relating to it should not be sensational, provocative or inflammatory.

Rosaiah appeals for calm after Ayodhya verdict

Hyderabad, September 18: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K. Rosaiah Saturday sought public cooperation in maintaining peace and communal harmony after an Uttar Pradesh court delivers its verdict on the Ayodhya dispute next week.

At a meeting with religious and political leaders at the state secretariat, the chief minister urged them to ensure that peace is maintained during Ganesh immersion procession Sep 22 and after the Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court pronounces its verdict in Ayodhya’s Ramjanmabhoomi-Babri Masjid row Sep 24.

Lalu gets bail in code violation case

Patna, September 18: RJD president Lalu Prasad was today granted bail by a Bihar Court in connection with a case charging him with violating the model code of conduct in the 2009 Lok Sabha polls.

Danapur Judicial Magistrate L Prasad allowed his plea for regular bail.

The court had earlier summoned Prasad for appearing before it in connection with the case registered with the Danapur police station.

Prasad appeared in person before it this afternoon and furnished a bail bond of Rs five thousand and a surety of the same amount for bail.

Security forces stage flag march in Ayodhya

Ayodhya, September 18: The security forces today staged a flag march here and in other parts of Faizabad district in order to maintain law and order and instil confidence among the people in view of Ayodhya verdict on September 24.

The flag march came a day after the special bench of Allahabad High Court refused to defer the date of verdict and rejected an application in this regard.

The forces comprised central forces, state police, Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) and mounted police with all equipment and weaponary at their disposal.

AP High Court Judge firm on resignation over vandalism

Hyderabad, September 18: Andhra Pradesh High Court Judge C V Nagarjuna Reddy remained firm on his resignation for the second day today though Chief Justice Nissar Ahmed Kakru persuaded his anguished colleague to reconsider his decision.

Justice Reddy submitted his resignation to the Chief Justice on Thursday night expressing “anguish” over the vandalism carried out by lawyers of Telangana region in the High Court for three days in a row.

Kerala girl defies threats, wears jeans – not burqa

Kasargode (Kerala), September 18: An aeronautical engineer by qualification and preparing for the civil services exam, a 23-year-old Muslim girl here refuses to wear the burqa and often sports jeans despite constant threats to her life.

Rayana R. Khasi, a resident of Kasargode, 600 km from state capital Thiruvananthapuram, has handed over the threat letters she received to the police.

Rayana has the full support of her family. She has had police protection since Aug 17, thanks to a court order, after increased threats in the last two months.

Italian parliament seeks ban on burqa

Italy, September 18: Italy’s anti-immigrant North League party has introduced a bill in the lower house of parliament seeking ban on burqa, the full body veil worn by Muslim women.

The right-leaning Northern League’s bill came just days after France’s upper house of parliament, the Senate, voted by 246 to one to ban the burqa.
According to the legislation, wearing burqa will be punishable by a year in prison, fines of 150 to 300 euros for the wearer and 30,000 euros for anyone forcing a woman to don the face-covering Islamic garment.

Puttaraja Gavai passed away

New Delhi, September 18: The renowned musician, Puttaraja Gavai, passed away at the Veereshwara Punyashrama in Gadag as per his last wish on Friday afternoon. He was 97.

The god of Hindustani classical singing was ailing for a while and admitted to a Belgaum hospital. He was shifted to Veereshwara Punyashrama in Gadag on his wish after he stopped responding to treatments.

The funeral will be held on Saturday noon in Gadag.

Washington, September 18: A US scientist and his wife have been arrested for passing on secret information to a man posing as Venezuelan spy to help that country develop a nuclear weapon.

Argentine-born physicist Pedro Leonardo Mascheroni, 75, and wife Marjorie Roxby Mascheroni, 67, are facing a total of 22 charges and, if convicted, could be sentenced to life in prison.

Kashmir unrest: One killed in fresh clashes

Srinagar, September 18: In a fresh protests in the summer capital, one person was killed and at least 14 injured on Saturday when security forces opened fire to disperse the stone-pelting mob.

The incident took place when angry mob took out a funeral procession defying the curfew in Anantnag town of south Kashmir.

With this, the toll in the ongoing unrest in the Kashmir valley, since June 11, rose to 97.

Pakistan gets flood relief from India

Islamabad, September 18: India’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Hardeep Singh Puri, has given a cheque for $20 million to the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, as India’s contribution towards the ‘Pakistan Emergency Response Plan’ in the presence of Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Abdullah Hussain Haroon on Friday.This amount of US$ 20 million is in addition to the amount of US$ 5 million that the Government of India has already contributed to the World Food Programme for its relief efforts in Pakistan.

Eng-Pak Oval ODI was fixed: Report

Mumbai, September 18: Another Match-fixing scam unearthed in the ongoing ODI series between England and Pakistan.

A leading British daily exposed the fixing scam during Oval ODI on Friday. The daily claimed that bookies knew the of Pakistan innings total before the match.

Meanwhile, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has ordered probe into the alleged fixing of Oval ODI, in which Pakistan defeated England by 23 runs. ICC feared that the two overs of the match were fixed.

Mary Kom enters World Championship final

Mumbai, September 18: Indian woman pugilist MC Mary Kom stormed into the final of World Boxing Championship. Mary Kom is the first Indian woman boxer to enter the finals of the event with a thumping win in the last-four stage here.

Mary Kom (48kg) defeated Alice Kate Aparri of Philippines 8-1 in the semifinals to assure herself of at least a silver in the sixth edition of the event.

The former Khel Ratna awardee will now face old rival Steluta Duta of Romania who defeated Kazakhstan’s Nazgul Boranbayeva 10-5.

India gives Pakistan $20 mn for flood relief

United Nations, September 18: India’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Hardeep Singh Puri, has given a cheque for $20 million to the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, as India’s contribution towards the ‘Pakistan Emergency Response Plan’.

The cheque was handed over to Ban in the presence of Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Abdullah Hussain Haroon Friday.

Four more gates of Osman Sagar lifted

Hyderabad, September 18 (Siasat News): The water gushed through Musi as four more gates of the Osman Sagar have been lifted yesterday. Two gates were lifted upto the level of two feet the day before but as the water has reached above the danger level it has been decided to open more gates.

Hajj flights to begin from October 24

Advocates’ agitation intensifies, protesters arrested

Hyderabad, September 18: Police tried to forcibly end hunger strike continued for three days by the advocates demanding 42 per cent reservation in judicial posts for Telangana and arrested hundreds of protesters on Friday.

The police arrested the advocates who went on indefinite hunger strike and shifted them to the Gandhi hospital. The situation became serious when police tried to arrest the advocates forcibly.
