Harish Khare clarifies, says Congress ’source of stability’

New Delhi, September 21: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s Media Advisor Harish Khare, who created a flutter with his comments Monday describing the Congress as “status quoist”, issued a clarification Tuesday saying that the 125-year-old party is the nation’s “most enduring source of stability”.

“I have always believed and argued that the Congress party is the nation’s most enduring source of stability,” Khare said in a statement.

New mining policy would curtail illegal mining: Steel Secy

New Delhi, September 21: The newly proposed mining policy would help curtail illegal mining and empower people settled in and around mining areas, Steel Secretary P.K. Misra said here Tuesday.

“The new mining policy, after it is enacted into law by parliament, will empower the local people and help people settled around mining areas to develop a more positive attitude towards mining,” said Misra, addressing steel producers and consumers at an interactive session on the Indian steel industry organized by FICCI.

Britain’s secret service had ‘no licence to kill’

London, September 21:The veil of secrecy which traditionally surrounds operations of Britain’s secret service was partially lifted Tuesday with the publication of the first authorised history of MI6, the country’s foreign intelligence service.

The author, Professor Keith Jeffery of Queen’s University, Belfast, was given unrestricted access to MI6 archives, on condition that he would not name or allude to any agent whose identity was not already in the public domain.

Collapsed foot overbridge near Commonwealth Games built by Hyd firm

New Delhi, September 21:The foot overbridge which collapsed Tuesday near the main Commonwealth Games venue, the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, was constructed by the Hyderabad -based PNR Infra, which was contracted by the Delhi government’s Public Works Department.

Delhi government’s Public Works Department minister Raj Kumar Chauhan told IANS: “A rod was being rested on a grid but a clip slipped…resulting in the bridge collapsing.”

“The bridge was constructed by Hyderabad based PNR Infra”.

Dropping Yuvraj was disappointing: Ponting

Chandigarh, September 21: Australian captain Ricky Ponting said the dropping of flamboyant cricketer Yuvraj Singh from the Indian Test side was disappointing, though he believed that the hosts would be out in the field with a strong batting line-up.

”Dropping of local star flamboyant Yuvraj Singh from the Test Series is disappointing. However, India have a strong batting line-up. The Test series is expected to be challenging and interesting,” Ponting told mediapersons here.

Obama is least popular in India: Report

New Delhi, September 21: Ahead of United States President Barack Obama’s visit to India, his approval rating has fallen to its lowest since 2008 in the country where the decisions of his administration to hike visa fee for professionals and outsourcing have grabbed the headlines.

The approval rating of the US leadership has dropped by 13 per cent — from 31 per cent in 2008 to 18 per cent in 2010, the latest Gallup Poll has aid.

Lucknow, September 21: The Samajwadi Party (SP) today alleged that the Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh, in nexus with the BJP, was creating ‘terror’ in the name of the Ayodhya title suit verdict.

The party also said it will accept the Allahabad High Court’s verdict in the case.

No safety arrangements at Express Highway

Hyderabad, September 21 (Siasat News): P V Narsimha Rao elevated express leading to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport Shamshabad from Sarojini Devi eye hospital Mehdipatnam which is said to be the longest express way of the country, lacks security or surveillance facility to monitor traffic on the flyover. On the flyover of nearly 11.6 kilometers, only one guard is on duty.

According to a survey conducted by some students a few months ago, there is traffic flow of 15345 motor vehicles per day on the express highway.

Jama Masjid firing:Two detained

New Delhi, September 21: Two persons have been detained for questioning in connection with the e-mail purportedly sent by terror outfit Indian Mujahideen, owning up the attacks outside Jama Masjid in Delhi on September 19,2010.

A Tata mobile number was used to send an e-mail to a foreign television network by a person from the IM owning up the terror attacks at the Jama Masjid in which two Taiwanese tourists were injured on Sunday.

Police teams rushed to an address in the western suburbs but found no trace of the person from the details given in the forged papers.

Pranab hails Sensex’s 20k breach

Mumbai, September 21: Cheering the stock market rally that pushed the benchmark Sensex above 20,000 points, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday said that he was happy about the milestone.

“We all know that the Sensex is always a little bit unpredictable. (But) I am happy that for the first time after January 2008, it has crossed 20,000,” Mukherjee said here.

The Minister was replying to reporters’ query about his views on the stock market benchmark’s new milestone.

High Court rejects Shahabuddin’s bail

Patna, September 21: Patna High Court today rejected the bail petition of former RJD MP Mohammad Shahabuddin in connection with a kidnapping case in Siwan district here.

Justice Rakesh Kumar dismissed his plea for bail after hearing his counsel Shakeel Ahmed Khan, a former RJD minister and the standing counsel for the state.

Shahabuddin moved the application for regular bail in a case registered against him on August 16, 1994, charging him with being involved in kidnapping of two locals Girish and Satish, who were later freed.

Protestors go begging

Hyderabad, September 21 (Siasat News): In a bizarre type of agitation against delay in fee reimbursement, Telugu Yuvatha and Telugu Nadu Students Federation resorted to protest by begging on roads.

‘US has illegally held Iranian citizens’

Tehran, September 21: President Ahmadinejad, in the US to participate in the United Nations annual General Assembly meeting, emphasized in an interview with the Russian TV on Monday that the Iranian captives were arrested in third countries by US agents under “false accusations” and transferred here to US jails, ISNA reported.

“This is abduction and does not fit in with any legal systems. They (Iranians) had traveled to other countries with official visas but were arrested by Americans.”

Murder accused stabbed to death in Andhra court

Hyderabad, September 21: A man accused in a murder case was stabbed to death in a court premises in Andhra Pradesh Tuesday.

Kondaiah, who was brought by police to the court for the murder case hearing, was stabbed and killed in full public view in the court complex in Miryalguda town of Nalgonda district, about 150 km from here.

Police said the attacker fled after killing the youth. The incident sent panic among litigants and lawyers at the court.

Fresh Allegations Cloud Australia’s Test Win

BJP against meeting separatists in groups: Swaraj

Srinagar, September 21: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sushma Swaraj, member of the all-party delegation on a two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir, said here Tuesday that the decision to meet separatist leaders in the valley in groups was not a collective one.

The leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha said the matter was not discussed in the meeting of the delegation, led by Home Minister P. Chidambaram.

However, she told reporters here, some delegates had “expressed the desire” to meet the separatist leaders.
