30 injured in suicide attack in Russia

Moscow, September 25: At least 30 people, including 20 police officers, were injured after a suicide bomber blew himself up during an anti-terrorist operation in Russia’s volatile North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, police sources said.

“According to latest updates, 30 people, including 20 police officers, have been hospitalised after the blast,” the source said, adding that three people were in serious condition.

Blaze destroys 320 homes in Brazilian slum

Sao Paulo, September 25: A fire that broke out early Friday in the slums of this Brazilian city destroyed 320 dwellings, authorities said.

No one was seriously injured in the blaze in the Real Parque shantytown area, the Sao Paulo municipal government said.

Several residents were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, while a man who fell from a roof was reported in stable condition at an aid station, according to media accounts.

Officials estimate around 1,300 people live in the area, about a quarter of which was reduced to rubble.

London, September 25: Myriam Francois-Cerrah found fame as a child actress in the 90’s hit film Sense and Sensibility.  Now she’s known for being one of a growing number of educated middle class female converts to Islam in Britain.

Francois-Cerrah says the September 11 terror attacks led to an intellectual curiosity about Islam and ultimately to conversion to the religion.  She believes the Prophet Muhammad was a man of peace.

Obama condemns Ahmadinejad’s speech

Washington, September 25: US President Barack Obama has described as “hateful” and “offensive” the claim by Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that most people believe the US government was behind the 9/11 attacks.

Mr Obama was speaking exclusively to BBC Persian television, which broadcasts to Iran and Afghanistan.

Mr Ahmadinejad’s speech at the UN General Assembly on Thursday triggered a walkout.

He later defended his remarks and called for an inquiry into the attacks.

Minister fired for having sex with Swaziland king’s wife

London, September 25: The king of Swaziland, who has 14 wives, has sacked his justice minister after the politician was caught red-handed having sex with one of the women in the southern African kingdom, media reports here said.

King Mswati III, 42, an “enthusiastic practitioner” of polygamy and father to 23 children, was shown pictures by police of his minister Ndumiso Mamba hiding under the bed of his adulterous 12th wife, Nothando Dube.

Man pushes lover from top of waterfall

Bhadrachalam, September 24: In a gruesome incident, a youth pushed his lover into a 40-ft deep Bagada waterfalls near Wazedu village yesterday. When she was still alive after the fall, he strangulated her to death with her chunni. The incident came to light today.

Wazedu sub-inspector N Karunakar said Bolle Narasimha Rao (28) of Srirampuram fell in love with Garapu Nagalakshmi (19) of the same village.

Sompeta blast: No clue about culprits

Srikakulam, September 24: Even 24 hours after the bomb blast at Mahalakshmi Nursing Home in Sompeta, the police remain clueless regarding the kind of the bomb or about the culprits. However, highly placed sources said it was not a crude bomb as a detonator was found from the site.

It may be a time bomb containing less explosive materials aimed at creating a major impact but causing less damage.

Narthana back in Nellore from Chennai hospital

Nellore, September 24: Narthana, who had suffered at the hands of her mother and mother’s lover, and was admitted to the Kanchi Kamakoti Trust Hospital in Chennai for treatment, returned here this evening.

The girl was discharged from the hospital in Chennai at 9:30 am and was brought to Nellore at around 3 pm.

NTPC’s Kudgi project to supply power to AP

Hyderabad, September 24: A power purchase agreement (PPA) has been signed by the NTPC with various power distribution companies in the state for supply of power from Kudgi super thermal power project stage-I of the NTPC Limited here on Thursday.

As per the agreement, NTPC will supply power to Central Power Distribution Company Limited (CPDCL), Eastern PDCL (EPDCL), Southern PDCL (SPDCL) and Northern PDCL (NPDCL).

Rag-pickers have a field day collecting scrap

Hyderabad, September 24: Minutes after immersion of Ganesh idols on NTR Marg on Thursday, the entire stretch witnessed heavy scrambling to fish out iron and other scrap materials from the lake bank.

As huge idols floated on the lake surface, a few hundred men clambered up on them to retrieve remains of iron pedestals, mangled pieces of iron and other scrap. A large number of rag-pickers and labourers entered into the lake on Thursday morning to retrieve whatever scrap they could get their hands on.

Many scrap dealers had hired labourers to retrieve the scrap metal.

Traffic comes to a standstill for immersion

Hyderabad, September 24: Traffic jams were the order of the day at many localities surrounding the Hussain Sagar as immersion of Ganesh idols continued till Thursday afternoon.

A day after the public holiday, scores of motorists were caught in traffic jams for a long time while on their way to their offices and colleges. The bottlenecks were visibly felt at Khairathbad, Lakdi-ka-pul, Liberty and Tank bund Junction.

Traffic was worst-hit when the huge Khairatabad Ganesh was brought for immersion. Traffic movement eased only after 11 a.m, when immersion of the huge idol was completed.

Police file chargesheet against Hyderabad school principal

Hyderabad, September 24: Hyderabad Police have filed a chargesheet in a local court against Mohammed Salahuddin Ayub, former director of an international school who has been arrested for allegedly raping a teenager.

The Central Crime Station — a wing of Hyderabad Police, investigating the case on Wednesday last filed the chargesheet against Ayub after he was arrested on July 22 on charges of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old student, police said.

Assistant engineer trapped by ACB

Hyderabad, September 24: Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Friday caught an assistant engineer in Warangal district of Andhra Pradesh for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 8,000.

M Ramesh Babu was caught by the officials at his residence in Warangal Town when he accepted Rs 8,000 from a person for doing an official favour, an ACB release said here.

Babu was posted with Sarwa Shiksha Abhiyan in Narsampet Mandal of the district.

DLR seeks cancellation of APIIC-Emaar pact

Hyderabad, September 24: Former minister and Mydukur MLA DL Ravindra Reddy on Thursday demanded cancellation of agreement reached between the APIIC and Emaar Properties company in accordance with the recommendations made by the Solicitor General and the experts committee constituted by the state government.

Addressing newspersons in the Assembly premises, Ravindra Reddy made it clear that he had no intention to target the individuals, but would only seek corrective measures to remove loopholes in the system.

Three government officials in ACB net

Hyderabad, September 24: Three government employees were caught taking bribe by Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) sleuths in separate cases.

The town planning supervisor in the Nalgonda municipality V Prabhakar Rao was caught red-handed on Thursday morning in his office, while taking Rs 5,000 bribe from a person to process a file pertaining to compensation payment for his land which was acquired by the municipality.

Prabhakar Rao was arrested and will be produced before a special court for ACB cases in Hyderabad, an official release said.

Emaar scam: VHR pushes for CBI probe

Hyderabad, September 24: Basing on the recommendations made by the Solicitor General and the expert committee constituted by the state government on the controversial Emaar Properties issue, senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member V Hanumanth Rao on Thursday asserted that it was a fit case to order a CBI probe into the scandal which involved more than Rs 10,000 crore.

Only the CBI probe would expose the ‘unseen forces’ responsible for the largescale irregularities in the APIIC-Emaar Properties issue, he noted.
