Flood claims six more lives in UP

Lucknow, September 25: Major rivers in Uttar Pradesh continued to be in spate despite absence of heavy rains as six more people perished in floods today taking the death toll this season to 386 in the state. While four persons, including a child, drowned in Hardoi district, one each death was reported from Bijnore and Badaun districts in flood-related incidents, officials said.

Cases to be lifted against Telangana agitators

Hyderabad, September 25: The Andhra Pradesh government has decided to withdraw 790 cases booked against 3567 agitators specially students, during separate Telangana and united Andhra movements.

However the cases booked against those who damaged the public and private property will not be lifted. The decision will be formally announced within a week.

Ration cards will be issued under biometric system

Hyderabad, September 25: Civil supplies Minister, Mr. J Krishna Rao said ‘new ration cards will be distributed under biometric systems from the month of November this year. Tenders have been invited in 7 districts of the state for this purpose.’ The minister launched the developmental activities worth 3 crore 3 lakh by Mahboobnagar Municipal.

He said ‘those who are not having ration cards should apply for the same. A total of 7 lakh applications for new ration cards have been received so far.’

Penalty notices sans demand bills

Hyderabad, September 25: Even as the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation suffers with the financial crisis the municipal officers are so careless that they forgot to dispatch demand bills for municipal tax to the tax payers.

Generally the municipal tax is paid in two installments, one in the middle of July and the other in the end of October.

Residents have made complains that this time they didn’t receive any demand notice hence they didn’t pay tax but now they have received notice to pay tax with penalty.

93 dengue cases in a day in Delhi, total reaches 2,821

New Delhi, September 25: Dengue retained its grip over the national capital with 93 fresh cases being reported today, taking the total number of patients suffering from the vector-borne disease to 2,821. The capital has reported five dengue deaths this season.

Iran: S-300 ban will dismay Russians

Tehran, September 25: Iran warns that Russia’s decision to ban the delivery of the sophisticated S-300 missile system to the country will negatively influence Russian public opinion.

After continuous delays and mixed signals regarding the delivery of the defense system, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev issued a decree on Wednesday prohibiting the delivery of the missile system to Iran.

Iran’s Ambassador to Moscow, Mahmoud-Reza Sajjadi, said Russia’s decision to ban the delivery was a “political measure,” adding that the move had two consequences for Moscow.

CRPF man, Maoist killed in encounter in West Bengal

Jhargram, September 25: CRPF personnel and a Maoist were killed in an encounter between the joint forces and rebels at Bandarboni and Cheraboni areas near Jhargram town of West Midnapore district.

The encounter which began Friday night was still continuing.

Police said the joint forces surrounded Bandarboni, Cheraboni and Tetuldanga areas last night after getting a tip-off that Maoists had taken shelter in those areas after triggering a series of violent incidents in Jhargram recently.

Hearing postponed in cases against Sania Mirza

Muzaffanagar (UP), September 25: A local court today adjourned till November 11 the hearing in the three cases against tennis player Sania Mirza for allegedly insulting national anthem during a function two years ago.

Three separate cases were filed against Sania Mirza, 23, for allegedly insulting national anthem under The Prevention of Insult to National Honour Act 1971, on November 8, 2008, the prosecution said.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Vikas Goel has now fixed November 11 for further hearing.

Aafia’s return to Pakistan

Islamabad, September 25: Pakistan will have to sign with foreign countries two international treaties dealing with the exchange of prisoners to enable the return from the US of Aafia Siddiqui, a Pakistani-origin neuroscientist jailed on charges of being a suicide bomber.

The US government apparently has informed the interior ministry of Pakistan about the procedure in this regard. Interior Minister Rehman Malik said Friday that the government would write a letter to the US authorities to bring back Aafia as a prisoner.

Live webcast of select booths in Bihar polls

Patna, September 25: It is now official. The Election Commission (EC) has decided to webcast the coming Bihar assembly elections – on an experiment basis – to ensure free and fair polls.

“The EC has decided for live webcast of the Bihar assembly elections, first time in any polls in India,” additional chief electoral officer Kumar Anshumali said here Saturday.

The EC plans to webcast live polling at 20 percent of the 56,943 booths in the 243 assembly constituencies in Bihar.

CBI files charge-sheet in Volkswagen case, clean chit to Botsa

Hyderabad, September 25: The Central Bureau of Investigation on Saturday filed a 150 page charge-sheet in Nampally Court against six persons and a company, including Helmut Schuster for their involvement in the Volkswagen-Vashishta Wahan scam which rocked the state in 2005.

The charge-sheet does not include the name of Panchayat Raj Minister Botsa Satyanarayana who was accused by the opposition to have been involved in the Two Million Euro scam.

Nursing student commits suicide

Guntur, September 25: A second year nursing student was found hanging in her hostel bathroom at Morrispet, Tenali mandal in Guntur district on Saturday.
According to Inspector Srinivas Rao, victim Nalinidevi (23), daughter of Jaya Rao was a resident of Giddalur in Prakasam district.

Nalinidevi was studying BSC 2nd year (nursing) in Jeevan Jyothy Nursing College at Tenali in Guntur district. She was an inmate of the college hostel for her studies. According to Nalinidevi’s classmates, she was not seen since Friday morning.

Robbers decamp with temple valuables

Hyderabad, September 25: Unidentified miscreants broke in at the Tuljabhavani temple in Mansurpally Tanda in Gangedu mandal in Ranga Reddy district, late on Friday and robbed valuables worth around Rs 3 lakh.

According to police, the robbery was noticed early on Saturday after the priest opened the temple door for the early morning rituals at around 5 AM.
Five tolas of gold and one kilogram of silver ornaments were missing apart from the temple hundi.

Advani urges Supreme Court to allow Ayodhya judgment

Somnath, September 25: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani Saturday urged the Supreme Court to allow a decision on the Ayodhya dispute by the Allahabad High Court, and said people had been waiting for a judgment in the case for over past five decades.

RJD activists burn effigy of Lalu Prasad

Patna, September 25: Youth activists of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), angered at being neglected in the distribution of tickets for the coming assembly polls, Saturday burnt an effigy of party chief Lalu Prasad.

Burning the effigy in front of the party office here and shouting slogans against Lalu Prasad, they threatened to work against the RJD in elections if they were not given tickets to contest the polls.

The RJD is facing a tough time for the last two weeks as dozens of party leaders have deserted and joined the ruling Janata Dal (United) and the Congress.

CBI charges Volkswagen ex-official, 5 others with fraud

Hyderabad, September 25: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Saturday formally filed charges against six people, including former Volkswagen executive Helmuth Schuster, in a fraud case.

The investigating agency, which took up the probe in 2005, filed the 150-page charge sheet in the CBI court here. It examined 59 witnesses.

The name of Andhra Pradesh Minister for Panchayat Raj B. Satyanarayana, however, did not figure in the charge sheet. He was then holding the industries portfolio and had come under allegations from opposition.

India reacts sharply to Sino-Pak Nuke hobnobbing

New Delhi, September 25: India has reacted sharply to Sino-Pak nuclear hobnobbing. Earlier, China’s main nuclear energy corporation was in talks with Pakistan to build a one-gigawatt nuclear power plant in Pakistan, a media report said. This move could intensify international unease about their nuclear deal.

Pakistan’s atomic activities have sparked concern in the United States and India, which fear that nuclear material could fall into the hands of Taliban extremists operating near the Pakistani border with Afghanistan.

Advani visits Somnath temple

Mumbai, September 25: Senior BJP leader LK Advani visited the famous Somnath Temple in Gujarat on Saturday.

Advani was accompanied by former BJP leader Uma Bharti to mark the 20th anniversary of his Ram Rath Yatra. Advani visits Somanth temple every year on September 25.

The Ram Rath Yatra began from Somnath on September 25, 1990 and was culminated at Ayodhya on October 30, after traversing 10,000 km.

New Delhi, September 25: The Commonwealth Games Federation President Mike Fennell on Saturday appreciated the efforts of India in finishing pending works at the Commonwealth venues and the games village.

He further expressed hope that remaining work will be completed in the next eight days for the successful conduct of the mega event.

Muslims demand apology for New Zealand minister’s joke

Wellington, September 25: New Zealand’s Islamic community has written to Prime Minister John Key demanding an apology for a joke one of his ministers made about Muslims, the Dominion Post newspaper reported on Saturday.

The president of the Federation of Islamic Associations New Zealand, Anwar Ghani, said Muslims were “very upset” about the remarks made in a speech by Building Minister Maurice Williamson.

“We brought it to the notice of the PM saying that what was said was highly inappropriate and the minister should be reprimanded and apologise,” Ghani told the newspaper.

Ayodhya verdict: SC forms 3 judges bench

New Delhi, September 25: A Special three judges bench of the Supreme Court will hear the deferment plea of Ayodhya verdict on September 28.

The three-bench comprising Chief Justice of India SH Kapadia, Justice Aftab Alam and Justice Radhakrishnan will take up the plea, seeking deferment of Ayodhya/Babri Masjid verdict.

Earlier, the apex court had stayed the Special bench of Allahabad High Court long awaited verdict by one week till September 28.

The court passed the stay order on a reconciliation plea filed by a retired bureaucrat Ramesh Chandra Tripathi.

Forced landing by Pak plane

Islamabad, September 25: The Pakistan International Airlines aircraft was diverted to Stockholm’s Arlanda airport, after a bomb threat .The Boeing 777, carrying 273 people, was flying from Canada to Pakistan when officials contacted the pilot to tell him about the threat.

Suspicions that a passenger had smuggled a bomb on board a Pakistan Airlines plane heading from Toronto to Karachi forced the pilot to make an emergency landing in Stockholm early Saturday, reported Swedish authorities.
