CBI questions Ramalinga Raju

Hyderabad, October 05: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Tuesday questioned B. Ramalinga Raju, the prime accused in the multi-crore Satyam fraud case, for over two hours.

The disgraced founder and former chairman of the Satyam Computer Services Limited, who was discharged Saturday from a hospital, arrived at the CBI’s regional office before 10 a.m. and left around noon. He refused to answer any query from waiting journalists.

Satyam employees not worried about company’s health

Hyderabad, October 05: Employees of Mahindra Satyam, the erstwhile Satyam Computer Services, say they are not worried about the financials of the company. Last week, Mahindra Satyam reported an aggregate loss of Rs 8,300 crore for 2008-09 and 2009-10.

“The results were a very honest statement that the company has given. And keeping in view the liabilities they had, I feel it was a very good exercise that they had done, considering the complexities involved. It was a fruitful projection of the status of the company,” said Varun Kumar (name changed), an employee for over 10 years.

Ayodhya priest, Imam advocate for both temple and mosque

Ayodhya, October 05: With the entire country looking for an amicable
solution to the Ayodhya issue after the September 30 Allahabad High
Court’s verdict, the religious heads in the temple town has advocated for peaceful co-existence of temple and mosque at the Ram Janmabhoomi complex.

Pramod Kumar Tiwari, assistant pujari at the Ram Lalla makeshift temple, said there should be no reason to object the construction of a mosque on the land allotted to the Muslims by the High Court.

Andhra police gun down criminal, family cries foul

Hyderabad, October 05: A notorious criminal was killed in a shootout with police in Andhra Pradesh’s Krishna district Tuesday, but his family alleges he was murdered in cold blood and claims it had earlier complained of a threat to his life from a top cop.

According to police, Adapa Venkanna was killed when a police team returned fire in self-defence near Pedapulipaka in Penamaluru mandal near Vijayawada in the coastal district.

US envoy visits Egypt to save Middle East talks

Cairo, October 05: The US’ special envoy to the Middle East sounded a cautious discord Sunday after he met with Egyptian President Hosny Mubarak, saying that he has faced ‘difficulties and obstacles’ in his bid to sustain peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians.

‘We knew when we began these efforts that there would be a lot of difficulties and obstacles, and there have been,’ George Mitchell told journalists just after his meeting with the Egyptian president in Cairo.

Pakistanis make a beeline for aircraft crash site

Islamabad, October 05: Pakistanis are still visiting the site in the Margalla Hills, located near this Pakistani capital, where an aircraft crashed with over 150 people onboard on July 28.

On July 28, the aircraft carrying 152 people crashed amid heavy rain in the lush green Margalla Hills that ring this city. The plane, flying from Karachi to Islamabad, suddenly lost contact with the airport here and crashed near the popular Damanekoh resort.

Musharraf should be tried, says provincial assembly in Pakistan

Islamabad, October 05: Former Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf should not only be tried for violating the constitution, but also for getting Baloch leader Akbar Bugti killed and for staging the Lal Masjid massacre, Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa assembly has demanded.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s Javed Abbasi accused Musharraf of conspiring against democracy in Pakistan while being based in a foreign country.

He said Musharraf has trampled the constitution twice, got Baloch leader Akbar Bugti killed and staged the Lal Masjid massacre.

Qurans burnt in West Bank mosque attack

Beit Fajjar, October 05: Jewish settlers opposed to a peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians were accused of setting fire to a mosque in the West Bank on Monday, burning the Quran and scrawling threats in Hebrew on its walls.

Maintenance for Girlfriend ? SC to decide

New Delhi, October 05: The Supreme Court on Monday decided to examine whether a live-in partner , concubine or a girlfriend is entitled to maintenance even though under existing Indian laws she is not eligible.

The apex court passed the direction while chiding a man who was in a intimate relationship with a woman for 14 years but refused to pay her maintenance on the ground that she was not legally entitled to it.

Settlers set fire to West Bank mosque in protest against Israel

Bethlehem, October 05: A Palestinian mosque on Sunday night was burned down by West Bank settlers in protest against Israel’s policies, the Haaretz newspaper reported on Monday.

The mosque was located in the village of Bayt Fjar near Bethlehem. Haaretz reported that a group of settlers entered the community and burned down the mosque before residents were able to intervene. The attackers and local residents then engaged in a fight as the flames burned down the mosque.

Congress releases third Bihar list

Patna, October 05: The Congress Monday declared its third list of 42 candidates for the Bihar assembly polls.

The party has changed its candidates in the constituencies of Manihari and Mahnar.

The party had announced 77 candidates in the first list and 45 in the second.

The polling for six-phased Bihar polls will start Oct 21. The Congress is contesting all 243 seats in the state on its own.

NATO calls on Pak to open border for supplies

Brussels, October 05: NATO Monday expressed regrets for the death of three Pakistani soldiers killed in its cross-border helicopter raid against Taliban militants and asked Pakistan to open the border for supplies as soon as possible.

The Pakistani government Thursday shut down one of the most heavily used supply routes for NATO convoys in retaliation for the increasing number of attacks by US-led NATO forces on targets in the border region with Pakistan that serve as a base for militant groups in Afghanistan.

UAE builds village in flood-hit Pak

Islamabad, October 05: An ‘Emirates Village’ for the flood victims was inaugurated Monday in northwest Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

Addressing an opening ceremony, Chairman of the United Arab Emirates Red Crescent Authority (RCA) Ahmed Humaid Al Mazruoie said that the UAE would offer more relief assistance to the flood victims in Pakistan to alleviate their suffering.

Japan warns about terror in Europe

Paris, October 05: Japan issued a travel alert for Europe on Monday, joining the United States and Britain in warning of a possible terrorist attack by al-Qaida or other groups, but tourists appeared to be taking the mounting warnings in stride.

The Foreign Ministry in Tokyo urged Japanese citizens to be cautious when using public transport or visiting popular tourist sites — issuing another blow to Europe’s tourism industry, which is just starting to recover from the global financial crisis.

Malaysian body to build 1,000 homes in Pakistan

Kuala Lumpur, October 05: A Malaysian organisation would help Pakistan build 1,000 low-cost houses for homeless people in the flood-affected areas, a media report said.

The Malaysia Relief Agency (MRA), which had earlier sent three relief teams to Pakistan, would build the houses at an estimated cost of Rs.83 million, the Online news agency reported.

Abdul Razak Bin Kechik, MRA president, while announcing this during the launch of a charity market in Kuala Lumpur, said the market was aimed at raising fund to finance the project in Pakistan.

26 killed in Indonesia floods

Jakarta, October 05: Flash floods in Indonesia have left at least 26 people dead, while many people were missing, officials said.

As many as 61 people were injured and 31 houses were damaged in the floods in West Papua province during the weekend, Priyadi Kardono, spokesman of the Disaster Management Agency, was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

Kardono said rescue operations for the missing people were hampered by fallen trees.

Muhammad Arifin, head of operations of the Search and Rescue Office for West Papua, said dozens of rescuers have departed for the region.
