Geelani’s call will endanger lives of innocents: Army

Srinagar, October 06: The Army today flayed separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani for his call to people to obstruct security forces saying it was a deliberate attempt to incite local population and endanger their lives.

“The statement (of Geelani) is a deliberate attempt to incite the local population and whip up passions while playing with lives of innocent people who will be left to to the mercy of these mercenaries,” a defence spokesman said.

The Games’ Organising Committee today launched the live video streaming of events in partnership with an Indian knowledge services firm ‘Smile of India’.

This, the OC said, would bring the Games closer to millions of Indians across the country and would allow them to watch live action anywhere on their mobile phone.

Bangalore, October 06: Indian batting icon Sachin Tendulkar today bagged his maiden ICC Cricketer of the Year trophy along with the People’s Choice Award, while compatriot Virender Sehwag was named the Test Cricketer of the Year at a glittering ceremony here.

Tendulkar, who has an international career spanning over two decades, clinched the coveted trophy by beating South African Hashim Amla, Englishman Graeme Swann and Sehwag.

Ex-President’s grandson dies in road mishap

Hyderabad, October 06: Neelam Ravi Kumar Reddy, the grandson of former President Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy and his driver were killed in a road mishap which occurred at Yerraguntla in Sirivella mandal in Kurnool districton Wednesday.

According to reports, Ravi Kumar Reddy was attached to the Proddatur One Town police station as the Station House Officer, better known as the Circle Inspector.

Mr Ravi Kumar Reddy and his driver were killed when their vehicle collided with a lorry near Yerraguntla in Sirivella mandal in Kurnool district.

Technical snags force more units at NTTPS to halt

Vijayawada, October 06: Even as experts and officials were working overtime to restore power generation in Units 4 and 7, a technical snarl forced officials of the Narla Tatarao Thermal Power Station (NTTPS) to halt power generation at Units 1, 2 and 6 on Wednesday.

Today’s technical snarls have come at the worst possible time since Units 4 and 7 have been shut down earlier, due to a technical snag and an explosion in a transformer.

Officials say that 1330 MW of power generation has now been affected due to the shutting down of the five units.

Police, Naxals exchange gunfire, Rs 2.17 lakh recovered

Khammam, October 06: Police on Wednesday recovered Rs 2.17 lakh from the site of a gunfight with a group of armed Maoists in Khammam district on Wednesday.

According to sources, the gunfight broke out when a police team, on a combing operation, noticed movement of Naxals in the forests in Gollamadugu in Velerupadu mandal of the district bordering Chhattisgarh.

However, no casualties were reported on either side. The Maoists managed to escape from the spot, the police said.

UAE hospital provides health care to Pakistani children

Abu Dhabi, October 06: A United Arab Emirates hospital has provided health care to 4,000 children in Pakistan’s Sindh province, it was announced Wednesday.

The hospital has provided therapeutic and surgical services as part of a campaign to treat one million children.

The endeavour was launched by Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak, chairwoman of General Women’s Union.

Pakistani officials have lauded the UAE government for its efforts to help the children in Pakistan.

1.25 lakh teachers required under Right to Education Act

Hyderabad, October 06 (Siasat News): Andhra Pradesh will require 1.25 lakh teachers for proper implementation of Right to Education Act. Likewise if the said act is implemented then 81435 new teachers need to be recruited in the next five years, while 9 thousand teachers are taking retirement from the service every year.

257 D.Ed and 79 colleges of Telugu pandit are required in the state while increase in the number of B.Ed colleges is not likely. However there is a capacity to increase 38 additional M.Ed colleges.

‘Iran can export arms to 50 countries’

Tehran, October 06: “At the moment the Islamic Republic is at the height of power and is able to export defense products,” Mehr news agency quoted Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi as saying on Wednesday.

General Vahidi hailed the Islamic Republic’s achievements in manufacturing strategic defense products, reiterating that the country’s self-sufficiency in military industries has had noticeable growth.

Miscreants poisoned lake in Assam

Assam, October 06: Unidentified miscreants have poisoned Haflong Lake, the main source of drinking water in Haflong town in Assam’s North Cachar Hills district, officials said.

The residents spotted floating dead fish on Tuesday and informed the police who recovered four bottles of 500 ml of Thiogen chemical pesticide from the lake.

The district administration has ordered an inquiry into the incident and warned people not to use the water of the one-km long lake.

CWG 2010: Gagan Narang shoots Gold

New Delhi, October 06: Indian shooter Gagan Narang shot sixth gold medal for India on third day of Commonwealth Games here in New Delhi.

Gagan Narang also set new record in the 10 mair rifle shooting event. He shot 703.6 points in the event.

Olympic Gold medalist Abhinav Bindra won the silver medal in the event.

Earlier, India also bagged silver medal in Pairs Double Trap shooting event on Wednesday. Ronjan Singh Sodi and Asher Noria brought silver medal in this category.

With this gold, India has six gold, six silver and two bronze in the CWG 2010 medal tally.

Life sentence means freedom in India: Neelam Katara

New Delhi, October 06: Reacting to the Supreme Court’s verdict in the Priyadarshini Mattoo murder case, Neelam Katara, mother of another murder victim Nitish Katara, Wednesday said life sentence in India “means freedom for the culprits”.

“I know how it feels to lose one’s child. Life sentence in our country means freedom for the culprits, soon they are out on bail,” Katara told IANS in her first reaction to the verdict.

Govt should not get into Ayodhya dispute: Sibal

New Delhi, October 06: Government should not step into the Ayodhya issue as it was a “private dispute” which should be left to the parties concerned to resolve, Union HRD Minister Kapil Sibal has said.

Reconciliation must be left to the parties concerned.

The fact of the matter is that compromise and reconciliation is the way forward, he said.

“Government has no role to play in this. It can state publicly that the matter be resolved by the parties concerned.

Saudi prince sexually abuses servant, batters him to death

London, October 06: A Saudi prince has beaten his man servant lover to death in a sexually motivated attack at an exclusive London hotel, a media report said Wednesday.

Saud Abdulaziz bin Nasir Al Saud, the grandson of the billionaire king of Saudi Arabia, murdered Bandar Abdulaziz after subjecting him to weeks of physical and sexual abuse, the jury at Old Bailey was told, Daily Mail reported on its website.
