Amid persistent protests against the toll hike on the National Highway leading to international airport, Chief Minister Siddaramaih today said there will be concession on toll for villagers within the proximity of the highway.

“Toll will be collected at concession rate from villagers in about 40 km radius, that is Rs 220 per month for any number of trips they commute,” he told reporters here.

Villagers within a five kilometre radius need not pay any toll, he said.

The Electronics city in the country’s IT capital Bangalore was on the hit list of the ISI, a suspected agent of the Pakistani spy agency has said during sustained interrogation, police sources here said.

According to Public Works Department Minister H C Mahadevappa, the Union Ministry of Surface Transport has accorded in principle approval for upgrading seven different stretches of National Highways (NHs) comprises of Bangalore-Mysore in the State.

On Tuesday while speaking to media-persons here, he said close to 2,108 km of NHs would be upgraded to ensure smooth traffic flow on those routes. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) will improve the roads under public private partnership.

A 26-year-old railway attendant died of injuries he had suffered in a train accident under City Railway police limits on Monday night.

The deceased has been identified as Anil Kumar, a resident of Magadi Road and a native of Chikmagalur.

According to police, Kumar was hit by a bogie of Rajdhani Express while he was crossing the railway track.
He suffered severe injuries and was taken to the nearby Railway Hospital and was admitted to a private hospital for further treatment where he died on Monday night, police said.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court struck down a decision of the Karnataka government making it mandatory for all primary schools in the state to teach in Kannada language.

“The government can’t impose mother tongue on linguistic minority for imparting primary education,” the SC said.The schools had moved the Supreme court challenging the state government’s decision.

The government, schools alleged, had also threatened to withdraw their recognition if they failed to follow its order on making Kannada the medium of teaching.

The SSLC results are just round the corner, but government school students who passed last year’s exams with flying colours and were entitled to free desktops have still not got them.

The Karnataka Secondary Education and Examination Board (KSEEB), in-charge of distributing the desktops, have already got the allocated fund of Rs 2.46 crore in its kitty.

But, rise in the prices of desktops quoted during the tendering process has led to the impediment, according to a well-placed source.

On Friday night, a fashion designer allegedly hanged herself at her flat on CMH Road in Indiranagar.

According to Abhijitha, 35, who hailed from Chennai, said in a reported death note that her boyfriend Rohit Jain, an hotelier, had cheated on her and hence she was taking her life.

Recently the deceased had purchased a flat in the City and would stay there whenever she visited Bangalore, police said.
Four days ago, she arrived in the City and stayed in the flat ever since. Police have booked Jain for abetment to suicide.

In what could be an initial breakthrough in the probe into twin blasts in a train, a man who hurriedly got down from it here has been spotted wearing a handkerchief to mask his face in CCTV footages of Bangalore railway station, police sources said on Saturday.

It has been found that in the Bangalore footages, which have been examined by experts, the man who had covered his face with handkerchief was the same person who was seen running at the Chennai Central Railway Station platform, thus strengthening police’s suspicion.

Members of the Karnataka Muslim Muttahida Mahaz (KMMM), a confederation of 28 Muslim organisations visited Kabeer’s parents, who was shot dead by the Anti-Naxal Force (ANF), earlier this month. They consoled the aggrieved family and assured them of financial help of Rs. 1lakh as compensation. Campus Front of India (CFI) has condemned the telecast of faux video by television channels and also said that even the media houses have become prey to fascist powers.

While addressing a press meet, the General Secretary of CFI, Karnataka, Mr. Wasim Shareef refuted the allegation of raising anti-national slogans by CFI cadres during ‘Anti-Fascist’ day held three months ago. He said that people are being fooled through such fake videos.

On Wednesday evening, four unidentified men in an autorickshaw approached a 52-year-old typist near Ambedkar Medical College, off Shampur Main Road and hacked him to death in full public glare.

The deceased, Yusuf bin Mohammed, from Basavanagar, KG Halli, was returning home around 6 pm when the killers arrived in an autorickshaw, came near and hacked him to death even as passersby watched in horror. Bleeding profusely, Yusuf was taken to a hospital but he succumbed to his injuries, according to police.

The Tamil Nadu special investigative wing probing the twin bomb blasts on the Bangalore-Guwahati Express suspect that the explosives could have been planted at Bangalore.

Sources in the investigation agency, which rushed a team to Bangalore to pursue the new leads it stumbled on has information that the perpetrators of the explosion could have got support from sleeper modules working in Karnataka.

The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday dismissed the petition filed by Lex Property Developers, seeking stay on the disproportionate assets case against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and three others.

Justice Satyanarayan dismissed Lex’s plea, observing that it was an attempt by the company to delay the main case, in which Jayalalithaa has been charged with accumulating Rs 66 crore wealth disproportionate to known sources of income from 1991 to 1995 when she was Tamil Nadu Chief Minister.

The judge also imposed Rs one lakh penalty on the company.

Mr. Muhammad Atharullah Shariff has been appointed as the new president of the Karnataka State chapter of the Jamaat e Islami Hind by its National President Moulana Jalaluddin Umri.

Mr. Shariff will continue as the Ameer of Karnataka Jamaat for the remaining term- till March 2015, said the statement issued by the Jamaat. He took the charge from outgoing Ameer Mr. Mohammad Abdullah Javed on 16 April at Shanti Sadan, the statement said.

An estimated 70 per cent of the electorate today cast their vote in the re-polling held at 12 polling stations across nine Lok Sabha constituencies in Karnataka.

“We have estimated 65 to 70 per cent voter turnout at re-polling held in 12 polling stations today,” Karnataka Chief Electoral Officer Anil Kumar Jha told PTI.

“Polling was normal and peaceful,” he added.

Karnataka on Sunday said it has accepted the Kasturirangan committee report on the Western Ghats to stop mining but said it would not stop quarrying and sand mining in the ecologically sensitive area.

“We have accepted the recommendation to stop mining in Western Ghats but disagreed to stop quarrying and sand mining in the ecologically-sensitive Western Ghats,” Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T B Jayachandhra told reporters here.
