KCR kicks off campaigning in Huzurabad

Karimnagar, July 10: TRS president K Chandrashekar Rao kicked off campaigning for the upcoming bypolls from Huzurabad constituency, claiming that Telangana people have registered their first victory with the Election Commission accepting the party’s demand that bypolls be held through ballot paper in constituencies where the number of candidates exceeded 64.

“This is a good omen to all of us fighting for statehood to Telangana,’’ he said.

713 candidates in fray for Andhra by-election

Hyderabad, July 10: A total of 713 candidates are in fray for the July 27-bypoll to the 12 Assembly seats in Andhra Pradesh.

After scrutiny today, there were 713 candidates whose nomination papers were found valid, state Chief Electoral Officer I B Subba Rao told reporters here.

The last date for withdrawal of nominations is July 12.

Among the political bigwigs contesting the polls is Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President D Srinivas.

He is contesting from Nizamabad Urban Assembly constituency.

Jagan can aspire, dream and try to be CM: Rosaiah

Hyderabad, July 10: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K. Rosaiah Saturday said Congress MP Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy can dream and aspire for the chief minister’s post and that there is a method to it.

“Jagan is a young boy with a future. He needs proper advice. He can dream, aspire and try for the CM’s post but there is a method to get it,” Rosaiah said in an interview to NDTV.

“He could’ve waited for sometime and staked his claim,” he added.

Man hangs self on court premises

Visakhapatnam, July 10: A man committed suicide by hanging himself, in the court premises here on Saturday.

Police identified the person as a canteen owner. Police believe that he has resorted to the extreme step, due to financial problems. Police sent the body for post mortem and registered a case. (NSS)

Farmer finds Rs 4-crore worth gold biscuits

Warangal, July 10: The news that a farmer found gold biscuits worth Rs 4 crores created sensation in the district, on Saturday.

According to the information, a tribal farmer belonging to Samat Mote village under Pinapaka mandal found this dump, in the thick forest under Tadvai mandal. The news came to light when the farmer went to a provision shop for getting the gold weighed.

It is learnt that the farmer found a steel box containing 30 gold biscuits. The gold is valued at Rs 4 crores. A booklet containing details of the dump was also found in the box, these reports say.

Jagan continues with his successful yatra

Srikakulam, July 09: After rounding off a successful tour on the first day of his controversial ‘Odarpu Yatra’, Congress MP Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy on Friday resumed his journey in the villages of Srikakulam district in Andhra Pradesh.

Jagan began his journey at Tekkali and unveiled a statue of his late father and former state Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy near the Railway gate in the town.

Hyderabad, July 07: Motorcycle-borne youngsters tricked a realtor and made off with 22 tola gold ornaments from his car at the Nizampet Andhra Bank branch here on Tuesday morning. The tricksters raised a false alarm that oil was leaking from his car and as the realtor got down from the vehicle to check it, they fled with a bag containing the gold ornaments, police said.

3 criminal gangs nabbed

TRS to field dummies to defeat EVMs

Hyderabad, July 07: The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) has come up with a Gandhigiri tactic to defeat the resolve of the Election Commission to use electronic voting machines (EVMs) in the July 27 byelections in Telangana. It will field at least 70 dummy candidates as Independents, far too many for a single EVM control unit to hold. Each EVM control unit can accommodate a maximum of 64 candidates.

Jagan set to resume yatra

Hyderabad, July 07: A defiant Y S Jaganmohan Reddy left for Srikakulam this evening to resume his ‘Odarpu yatra’ from tomorrow even as Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K Rosaiah asked his Cabinet colleagues and party legislators to stay away from the Kadapa MP’s campaign.

Jagan boarded the Falaknuma Express at 4 pm at the Secunderabad railway station as scores of his cheering followers saw him off. None of the Congress MLAs, considered close to the rebellious MP, came to the railway station to see Jagan off following his “instructions”.

Private agents to collect water charges

Hyderabad, July 07: Consumers should get prepared to shell out a few extra bucks as the metro water board has decided to outsource issuance and collection of monthly bills.

After experimenting with the system, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board has decided to extend it to all the divisions. Private agencies would be allowed to collect Rs 10 from each consumer for their services.

Water board officials told Expresso that tenders inviting bids for the contract would be called by July-end. It might take two-three months to finalise the service providers.

Doctor suffers gunshot wounds

Hyderabad, July 07: A retired government doctor suffered bullet injuries under mysterious circumstances at Padmarao Nagar on Tuesday. Though police did not rule out suicide attempt, they suspect it might be a case of accidental firing.

The injured, 60-year-old K R Manohar Reddy, a retired ESI doctor, is said to be out of danger. His condition is likely to stabilise once the bullet is removed, according to doctors.

Maoist shutdown evokes partial response in AP

Hyderabad, July 07: The 48-hour shutdown called by the outlawed Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) to protest the killing of their spokesperson Azad evoked partial response in parts of Andhra Pradesh Wednesday.

The shutdown affected normal life in Maoist-infested tribal areas in the districts bordering Orissa and Chhattisgarh as authorities suspended bus services and cancelled few trains as a precautionary measure.

AP Monsoon session begins today

Hyderabad, July 07: The monsoon session of the State Assembly beginning tomorrow will be for seven working days (till July 15).

Though the ruling party wanted it restricted to five days, on the Opposition parties insistence that the Assembly meet for at least 10 working days, it settled for seven.

Opposition stages walkout on day 1 of AP monsoon session

Hyderabad, July 07: The opening day of the monsoon session of Andhra Pradesh Assembly today saw a brief adjournment and a walkout by the Opposition which cornered the ruling Congress on a host of issues.

The Opposition parties staged a walkout in the Assembly to protest the government’s “lackadaisical” response to issues likes restoration of seats in the three Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and construction of houses for people displaced by floods last year.

TDP fields Babu Mohan in Siddipet

Hyderabad, July 07: The TDP has released its final list of candidates for three Assembly byelections on July 27.

Former minister and film actor Babu Mohan will be its candidate for the Siddipet Assembly seat in Medak district while A Narasa Reddy will be the nominee for Nizamabad Urban.

For Vemulawada in Karimnagar district, the party will field G Venkateswara Rao.

The party has already announced its candidates for the other nine constituencies going to the polls.

Congress final list is out

Hyderabad July 07: The Congress high command today released the third and final list by announcing the candidates for the remaining two constituencies–Korutla and Mancherial. The party renominated former minister J Ratnakar Rao for Korutla and Krishna Rao for Mancherial.

Ratnakar Rao had lost to K Vidyasagar Rao of the TRS by a margin of over 15,000 in the 2009 election. His renomination was stiffly opposed by former MLA K Ramulu.
