Microfinance firms fear Andhra law will hurt them

Hyderabad, December 15: The Microfinance Institution Network (MFIN), a body of micro-finance companies, Wednesday expressed disappointment that the Andhra Pradesh legislative assembly passed a regulatory bill without any amendments, and feared the law would impact their smooth functioning.

The MFIN, which represents 44 micro-finance companies registered with the Reserve Bank of India, said the bill would create further hurdles for legitimate companies in providing access to finance for the poor.

TRS Legislators suspended from Andhra Assembly

Hyderabad, December 14: Legislators of the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) were on Tuesday suspended from the Andhra Pradesh Assembly when they stalled its proceedings demanding that the government withdraw all the cases booked against students during the agitation for a separate Telangana state.

All nine legislators of TRS present in the House were bodily lifted out by marshals after they refused to leave despite repeated appeals by Deputy Speaker N Manohar.

AP sanctions Rs 431 crore as cyclone relief

Hyderabad, December 13: The Andhra Pradesh government has sanctioned Rs 430.98 crore to various departments as relief to cyclone-hit people in the state.

The amount from the State Disaster Response Fund will cover the losses incurred between October 29 and November 30, an official release said here tonight.

Fifteen persons died in separate incidents related to natural calamities in the state. Nellore district accounted for eight deaths followed by East Godavari (four), Chittoor, Prakasam and Guntur (one each). Three persons were reported missing.

Pre-YSR days, appear to have returned

Hyderabad, December 13: “I am the most credible politician in the country,” Telugu Desam president N Chandrababu Naidu claimed here on Friday.

In an informal chat with reporters in the lobbies of the Assembly, Naidu said: “No one can doubt my credibility. I am the most credible leader in the country.

The other one is Farooq Abdullah.”

Jagan warns of Congress fall in AP

Hyderabad, December 12: Y S Jaganmohan Reddy on Saturday warned that the days of the Congress government in Andhra Pradesh were numbered as it was neglecting the farmers in distress.

“Any government that neglects the farmers, particularly during times of distress, would fall. The current Congress government is remaining indifferent to the plight of farmers who are hard hit by many natural calamities this year,” Jagan said addressing a gathering at Avanigadda in Krishna district.

Waqf board takes over Waqf commercial properties of Nirmal

Nirmal, December 11: Waqf board Andhra Pradesh took over the commercial property of Waqf from the possession of Jamia Masjid administrative committee Nirmal while the tenure of the administrative committee had ended long back.

Syed Ghulam Afzal Biabani better known as Khusro Pasha visited Nirmal shortly after assuming the charge as Chaiman Waqf Board Andhra Pradesh and inspected the property worth crores of rupees.

Khusro Pasha keenly reviewed the details of those properties and directed all the tenants to pay the rents to the authorities of Waqf Board from the current month.

14 killed in Andhra rains, standing crops damaged

Hyderabad, December 08: Heavy rains in Andhra Pradesh in the past two days have claimed 14 lives and damaged crops over 3.7 lakh hectares, causing great misery to farmers already reeling under the impact of recent cyclones.

Rescue workers Wednesday recovered 12 bodies from a stream near Vinukonda in Guntur district as heavy rains swelled the water body and overturned the vehicle they were travelling in.

Besides the 14 dead, 15 other people were missing in rain-related incidents.

SC Relief To Vemulawada, Sircilla MLAs

Hyderabad, December 08: The Sircilla MLA, Mr K T Rama Rao, and the Vemulawada MLA, Mr Chennamaneni Ramesh, on Wednesday heaved a sigh of relief with the Supreme Court ruling that they can continue as legislators as the by-elections were held already.

The highest court of the land, however, made it clear that the rule 151(A) of People’s Representation Act does not apply to the stipulation that by-elections should be held within six months after the seats fall vacant, when an election petition was pending in court.

Jagan’s party will not affect Cong in AP: Reddy

New Delhi, December 07: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy today said former Congress MP Jaganmohan Reddy’s decision of floating a new political party will not affect the Congress in the state.

“Many people left the Congress in the past. It will not affect the party in the state,” he told reporters here hours after Jagan announced that he would float a new political party in the next 45 days.

However, Reddy, who met Congress president Sonia Gandhi and discussed the latest political developments in the state, parried questions on who will be the deputy chief minister.

Jaganmohan Reddy to launch new party

Kadpa, December 07: Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy, who quit as MP and resigned from the Congress recently, announced on Tuesday that he would float a new party within the next 45 days, to uphold the self-respect of the people.

Expressing the confidence that his party (which he did not name) would gain power in 2014, Mr. Reddy said at a meeting of his followers and YSR fans of Simhadripuram mandal in Pulivendula that his party would bring back the “golden rule” of his father, late Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy (YSR).

Jagan to launch a new party within 45 days

Kadapa, December 07: Days after quitting Congress as well as Lok Sabha, Y S Jaganmohan Reddy on Tuesday announced that he will launch a new political party in Andhra Pradesh in 45 days.

The former Congress MP also told his supporters in his home town Pulivendula that the 2014 assembly elections in the state would be his “finals”.

“I will be launching a new political party in 45 days… Lakhs and lakhs of people still adore my father late Y S Rajasekhara Reddy and appreciate the enormous work done by him,” 37-year-old Jagan said.

38-member CLP body formed

Hyderabad, December 6: Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy formed 38-member Congress Legislature Party. The members include Shahjahan Pasha and Sheikh Hussain. The first meeting of the newly elected CLP will be held on December 9 in which chief minister will attend as chief guest.

Congress Legislature Party had not been formed since the Congress came into power for the second time. CLP formation had been delayed following the death of Rajshekhar Reddy in a helicopter accident.

Mr. N Kiran Kumar Reddy is not losing any opportunity to earn favour.

Caste conundrum: Andhra to send delegation to Delhi

Hyderabad, December 06: With two scheduled caste groups in Andhra Pradesh at loggerheads over sharing reservation benefits, the state government Sunday agreed to send an all-party delegation to Delhi.

The decision comes a day after Madiga Reservation Porata Samiti (MRPS) leader Manda Krishna Madiga began an indefinite fast, demanding categorisation of SCs.

Madigas, a major SC sub-caste, have long been demanding categorisation of SCs into A, B, C, D categories. They argue that Malas, another sub-caste, were cornering all the reservation benefits.

Telangana deliberations begin

Hyderabad, December 06: With Justice Srikrishna Committee due to submit its report on the Telangana issue on Dec 31, the Congress high command has initiated steps to arrive at an “appropriate decision.” Indications are that it is already holding consultations with leaders of other political parties.

Sources told Express that Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, who is expected to take over from Veerappa Moily as in-charge of the party’s affairs in Andhra Pradesh, had held talks with a senior leader of the BJP on the advisability of splitting the State into two.

No enmity with TRS, says Gadar

Warangal, December 04: Telangana Praja Front (TPF) convenor and Balladeer Gadar said that the TPF had no enmity with the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) and both the parties have only friendly differences.

Speaking to mediapersons here today, Gadar said that the TPF and TRS have their own ways and methods of running the Telangana movement. The TPF was formed with about 150 people’s organisations.

Woman set ablaze for spurning love, is critical

Ananatapur, December 04: In a shocking incident, a youth, Harijana Venkatappa (30), set ablaze a woman, Bharatamma (28), for spurning his love at Mydagolam village in Lepakshi mandal today.

According to information reaching here, Venkatappa, an autorickshaw driver, used to pester Bharatamma to have a relationship with him but the woman turned down his proposal.

Venkatappa plies his autorickshaw between Lepakshi and Mydagolam, and Bharatamma hired his vehicle several times.

All-party team seeks aid for rain-hit ryots

Hyderabad, December 04: An all-party delegation today urged chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy to see that the enumeration of crop loss due to the recent rains is completed immediately.

The team led by TDP leader Tammineni Sitaram today called on the chief minister at Secretariat.

The Opposition planned a road blockade on Dec 11 in the state on farmers’ problems.

The delegation urged the chief minister to open paddy purchase centres in all mandals and permit exports of BPT variety rice. They demanded Rs 5,000 towards input subsidy to farmers of bengalgram and other crops.

Government staff put off strike, get DA hike

Hyderabad, December 04: Talks between the State government and the representatives of government employees held this morning at the Secretariat turned fruitful.

The Employees, Teachers and Workers Joint Action Committee (JAC) agreed to postpone their strike for two weeks, while the state cabinet announced a hike of 8.56 per cent dearness allowance (DA) for the employees. The increase in DA results in an additional burden of Rs 1,488.04 crore on the government treasury.

Maoists kill TD leader, 2 others

Karimnagar, December 04: After a long gap, Maoists made their presence felt by killing three persons in as many incidents, torched an RTC bus, beat up people and kidnapped five persons in Warangal and Karimnagar districts late on Wednesday night.

Two armed women Maoists went to the house of TDP leader Md Majid (39) in Laxmipuram village of Eturunagaram mandal and told him that local MLA Seethakka was calling him.

When he came out of the house, they took him to the outskirts and shot him dead.
