Village servants seek hike in salary

Hyderabad, March 17: About 5,000 village servants under the aegis of the Andhra Pradesh Grama Sevakula Sangham took out a massive rally from Sundaraiah Park to dharna chowk here yesterday demanding enhancement of wages, dearness allowance and other issues on which an agreement was reached between the revenue minister and AP Village Servants Union on February 5, 2009.

Six killed in two road accidents

Hyderabad, March 17: Six persons, including a woman and her one-year-old son, were killed in separate road accidents on the outskirts of the city yesterday.

Four contract workers of electricity department were killed after a tractor in which they were travelling turned turtle at Yacharam while a mother-son duo were killed after hit by a RTC bus at Balanagar. Rash and negligent driving by the drivers of the vehicles led to both the accidents, police said.

Maize production in state on the rise: report

Hyderabad, March 17: Maize production in the state has gone up with the government supplying seeds to the farmers at the appropriate time, said principal secretary, Agriculture and Cooperation, V Nagi Reddy.

He released the report on Maize and Maize-based industrial opportunities in Andhra Pradesh by the Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FAPCCI) here on Wednesday. The comprehensive report indicates various suggestions, recommendations and action plan.

IT firms see no impact on business

Hyderabad, March 17: City-based IT companies on Tuesday said that the on-going nuclear catastrophe in Japan would have little or no impact on their business. Six SBI staffers among 11 convicted

Hyderabad, March 17: A special CBI court here today convicted 11 persons, including six bank officials, for cheating the State Bank of India’s Secunderabad branch here of Rs 12.57 crore that was taken as loans through forged and fake documents. The court sentenced the then branch manager of SBI (Secunderabad branch) GVLN Shastri, five bank officials and five others for a jail term ranging between five to seven years and also imposed a total fine of Rs two lakh against all of them.

CTO caught taking bribe of Rs 2.50 lakh

Hyderabad, March 17: Five government officials were caught by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials while taking bribe in separate instances across the state while unaccounted cash was found during surprise checks on two sub-registrar offices in East Godavari district.

Demand for JLC over land allotments stall AP House proceedings

Hyderabad, March 17: Main opposition Telugu Desam Party stalled the proceedings of Andhra Pradesh Assembly for the second consecutive day Thursday demanding that the government constitute a Joint Legislative Committee to probe into the “indiscriminate land allotments” in the last six years.

The House was adjourned twice this morning as the TDP members stormed the Speaker’s podium and demanded that the JLC be constituted to probe the land deals.

Also, the ruling Congress legislators from Telangana once again raised pro-statehood slogans leading to a din in the House.

Dr. Khaleel Basha injured in road accident

Kadapa, March 16: Former state minister Dr. Khaleel Basha was severely injured in a road accident yesterday night. His car rammed into a stationary tractor at Sambe palli mandal of Rae choti in Kadapa district. Khaleel Basha suffered serious head injuries and hand fracture in the accident.

19-year-old girl raped by a gang in moving car

Chirala, March 16: A 19-year-old girl was allegedly raped by five youths in a moving car in Chirala town of Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh, police .
said.
Four of the accused have been taken into custody, police said.

On the night of March 13, Srinivas Rao, the main accused, phoned the girl and told her that her father had asked him to pick her up from an internet cafe where she worked, police said. The girl believed him and got into the car.

Rao allegedly gave her some sedatives, and raped her. Then he called his friends, who too raped her, police said.

Light showers to bring relief from heat

Japan crisis may put state projects on hold

Hyderabad, March 14: The devastating earthquakes and tsunami that rocked Japan is likely to impact ongoing and proposed projects in Greater Hyderabad and the state.

Andhra Pradesh Central Power Distribution Company Limited (CPDCL), Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) and Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) are unsure about the fate of their projects as they fear that the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), which is funding many of them, may withhold the release of further funds.

Two arrested for selling illicit liquor

Hyderabad, March 14: Two illicit liquor transporters were arrested and large quantity of liquor seized from them by police on Sunday.

On information, Task Force sleuths nabbed the duo and seized 1,200 illicit liquor sachets and two scooters. The arrested are Surender Singh o f Puranapul and Babloo Singh alias Babloo of Lower Dhoolpet.

The duo were transporting the liquor f rom Puranapul, Jummerat Bazar to NTR Nagar in LB Nagar, Kothapet and selling the liquor at a higher price, Task Force additional deputy commissioner of police M Srinivasulu said.

4 killed in separate road accidents

Hyderabad, March 14: Four persons were killed and two suffered injuries in separate road accidents in the city outskirts yesterday.

A woman was killed and two injured after the jeep in which they were travelling rammed into a RTC bus on the Outer Ring road at Shamshabad. A houswife, Manjula (28) of Mamidipalli in Saroornagar, her motherin- law Eshwaramma and brother-in-law, Babu boarded a jeep to go to Shadnagar to attend a marriage of their relatives today around 11 a.m. Four other passengers were also present in the vehicle.

Family looks for help to bring Yadav’s body

Hyderabad, March 14: Members of the family of city lad K Sunil Kumar Yadav, who was found dead in his residence at Boul Cott in London on Saturday night (local time), find themselves helpless not knowing how to bring the dead body to Hyderabad in the absence of any communication from the London authorities till now.

The family said none of them had a passport nor can they afford to go to London to bring the body.

They are knocking on the doors of political leaders for help at this trying time.

No move yet to fly back victim’s body

Hyderabad, March 14: The family members of Sunil Kumar Yadav, who died mysteriously in London recently, are keeping their hopes on local political leaders to help in bringing back his body to Hyderabad.

As the last two days were holidays both in London and India, the officials of both countries have made no effort to shift the body to the city. However, Sunil’s family members said that Secunderabad MP Anjan Kumar Yadav and Rajya Sabha MP V Hanumantha Rao are flying to New Delhi on Monday to pursue the matter with the officials of External Affairs ministry.

Hyderabad, March 14: As people from all walks of life made a beeline for the Tank Bund to participate in the ‘padayatra’ organised by the Jana Chaitanya Vedika (JCV), emotions began swelling high.

The rally was organised to seek pardon from the iconic leaders and poets of Andhra Pradesh whose statues were vandalised on March 10. Labelling the day on which 17 of the 26 statues of the leaders and poets that stood along the Tank Bund road were vandalised by protesters as a ‘dark day’, many who gathered there said March 10 would remain a blot in the history.

Council poll peaceful; counting on Monday

Hyderabad, March 14: Polling in the elections to the State Legislative Council from three Graduates and three Teachers constituencies in the state passed off peacefully yesterday.

Chief electoral officer Bhanwar Lal said that polling began on a dull note and picked up momentum in the afternoon. Counting of votes would take place on March 15 at the district headquarters, he said. An average of 46.53 percent of votes were cast in the three Graduates constituencies and 77 percent in the Teachers constituencies.
