2,000 Congress activists join YSR Congress in Nalgonda

AP police seize 600 electric detonators, arrest two

Hyderabad, March 26: Police in Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh today arrested two persons and seized 600 electric detonators from them.

Police initially nabbed one Raju while he tried to flee during a routine vehicle checking last evening and recovered 300 electric detonators from him.

Based on Raju’s confession, police raided a place in Anantapur town and apprehended another accused V Sina and seized 300 more electric detonators, they said.

Two ‘unreported’ bird species spotted in Kolleru

Eluro, March 26:A couple of North Indian bird species — Greylag Goose and Greyheaded Lapwing — were spotted in Kolleru during a survey on Asian waterfowls undertaken by the Birdwatchers’ Society of Andhra Pradesh, in association with the Wildlife Division of the Department of Forests.

House to debate land allotment

Subabul growers lay siege to market committee office

Ongole, March 26: Hundreds of social forestry planters, led by the opposition TDP, CPI, CPI (M) and CPI (ML) New Democracy, laid a siege to the Agriculture Market Committee office here on Friday in protest against withholding of Rs.3 crore due to them.

Woman gang-raped in Chaderghat

Hyderabad, March 25: A 25-year-old widow from Vemulawada in Karimnagar district, who came to the city with her brother on some work, was allegedly abducted and gang-raped by four persons at Chaderghat on Thursday.

The woman and her brother, Sanjeev, arrived at MG Bus Station in the early hours. As they were heading towards Malakpet, four persons stalked them and intercepted them near Chaderghat.

SKC report: members stage walkout

Hyderabad, March 25: The members of Progressive Democratic Front staged a walkout in the Legislative Council on Thursday when the Chairman A.Chakrapani turned down their adjournment notice for a discussion on the eighth chapter of Justice Srikrishna Committee’s report.

Chukka Ramaiah, Paturu Sudhakar Reddy, Dileep Kumar and K. Nageshwar demanded a discussion in view of High Court’s judgement on a petition seeking to make the eighth chapter of the report public.

Achieve targets, Collector tells officials

Vizianagaram, March 25: The progress on 20-point-programme till January was satisfactory when compared to other districts in the state, said Collector M. Veerabrahmaiah.

At a review meeting with officials on Thursday, Mr. Verabrahmaiah said that during 2010-11, 2.04crore man-days were created by spending Rs.260.60 crore under MGNREGP. Under RWS scheme 201 habitations were covered against a target of 209, but the achievement under ISL scheme was a mere 28 per cent. Against target of 34,000 ISLs, 8,761 were built and the Collector asked officials concerned to improve the percentage.

GHMC to act tough on illegal constructions

Hyderabad, March 25: GHMC would act firmly on building deviations and illegal constructions in the city, said Mayor B. Kartika Reddy on Thursday and also warned of taking up demolitions of such structures.

Banks faulted for poor lending to underprivileged sections

Hyderabad, March 25: With just a week left for closure of the financial year, the role of banks in extending loans to the underprivileged and backward sections of society leaves a lot to be desired.

Most of the banks fall short of the target. In case of SC Service Cooperative Society, the banks are still 54 per cent behind the financial target. As against the financial target of Rs. 10.70 crore, only Rs. 10.27 crore has been disbursed.

Statistics’ Museum ‘Sankhya’ to come up in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, March 24: A National Museum of Statistics– ‘Sankhya’– said to be the first of its kind in the world, is coming up at University of Hyderabad.

Disclosing it at a press conference here today, Dr Seyed E Hasnain, Vice Chancellor University of Hyderabad, Dr C R Rao, distinguished Professor Emeritus and Advisor CRRAO AIMSCS, and others, said that the museum will be located on a five acre plot in the campus of University of Hyderabad.

All set for SSC examinations

Vizianagaram, March 24: Arrangements have been made for conducting SSC examinations beginning Thursday. Some 35,817 candidates, including 6,856 students from private schools, will appear for the examinations at 150 centres in the district. According to official information, the district administration has appointed 150 sitting squads and 14 flying squads to check malpractice.
