Handloom sarees a special attraction at crafts bazar

Kakinada, April 01: Handloom sarees from various parts of the country are a special attraction at the ongoing crafts bazar being organised by the Lepakshi Handicrafts Emporium on Raja Tank premises here.

A good number of the 90 stalls in the exhibition have been allocated to weavers from various districts in the State and the neighbouring Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and West Bengal.

APIIC serves notices on entrepreneurs

Vizianagaram, April 01: The Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructural Corporation (APIIC) has issued notices to 140 small and marginal entrepreneurs for delay in setting up units in the lands allotted at Bobbili Growth Centre.

The corporation had allotted 876 acres of land for 321 units, which included B.K. Steels (244 acres), Manganese Ore India Limited (112 acres), a joint venture of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, Vizag Profiles (80 acres), and Patil Rail Infrastructure (P) Limited (7.9 acres) anticipating an investment of Rs.11,000 crore.

Fast-track courts to continue for another year

Hyderabad, April 01 The 108 fast-track courts in the State, for which Central sponsorship ended on Thursday, will continue their work for another year with the State government deciding to bear their expenditure with its own funds.

These courts were established in 2001 in line with a national policy for a period of five years, initially, to reduce the pendency of cases and provide relief to the litigant public, with the Centre bearing 70 per cent of their expenditure and 30 per cent being met by the State.

State’s population reaches 8.46 crore, 5th most populated state

Hyderabad, April 1: Director of Census Operations, Andhra Pradesh has announced the provisional population totals for Andhra Pradesh on the basis of census 2011 according to which the total population of Andhra Pradesh is 8,46,65,533 comprising 4,25,09,881 males and 4,21,55,652 females, showing an increase of 84,55,526 persons over the 2001 census with a decadal growth rate of 11.10 percent.

Sex ratio highest in Nizamabad district

Hyderabad, April 01: The census figures for 2011 which were released on Thursday showed that Nizamabad retained its top position with regard to the sex ratio in the State with 1,038 females for every 1,000 males. In 2001, the sex ratio in the district was 1,017.

Victory rallies turn violent

Hyderabad, April 01: Processions taken out after India’s victory over Pakistan in the World Cup cricket semi-final match turned violent when two groups clashed in parts of Karimnagar late on Wednesday night. The clashes spilled over to Thursday afternoon.

People from various walks of life took out processions and vehicle rallies from Telangana Chowk to the Rajiv Chowk in the town on Wednesday night soon after India’s win. As soon as they reached Rajiv Chowk, some miscreants hurled stones at the gathering causing injuries to the people and some police personnel.

Thirteen MLCs administered oath

Hyderabad, April 01: Thirteen newly elected MLCs from various political parties, representing the graduates and the local authorities constituencies, took oath of office on Thursday.

Pro tem Chairman Singam Basavapunnaiah administered the oath to the members, who began their six-year term today. M.V.S.Sarma, who was elected from the Graduates constituency for the second successive term, was the first to take oath. Former Chairman of the Council A.Chakrapani and Legislature Secretary Raja Sadaram were present.

AP’s population growth rate down, sex ratio increases

Hyderabad, March 31: The total population of Andhra Pradesh has been pegged at 8,46,65,533 comprising 4,25,09,881 males and 4,21,55,652 females, as per the Census of India-2011 report released today.

The total population saw an increase of 84,55,526 people over the 2001 Census with a decadal growth rate of 11.10 as against 14.59 recorded in the 2001 census, Y V Anuradha, Director of Census Operation in Andhra Pradesh, told reporters here.

The decadal growth rate has come down by 3.49 during the 2001-2011, she said. Decadal growth rate is growth rate in terms of percentages.

Kadapa, Bastar LS seats to go to polls on May 8

KIadapa, March 31: Bye-elections to Kadapa Lok Sabha seat in Andhra Pradesh, held by former Congress MP Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy and Bastar Parliamentary seat would be held on May 8, the Election Commission announced on Wednesday.

Bypolls to three assembly seats one each in Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Nagaland would also be held on the same day.

The assembly seats include Pulivendula, held by Jagan’s mother Vijayalaxmi, who had also resigned as MLA after her son revolted against the party and decided to float his new party.

‘Illegally’ transported tobacco seized

Kalam stresses need to review nuclear energy plants

AP Congress denies Jagan group charge over House panel

Hyderabad, March 30: Congress in Andhra Pradesh today rejected the allegations of the Jagan group that it had a tacit understanding with Opposition TDP over constitution of a House Committee to look into allegations of irregularities in land allocations for industries in the state.

“Even when Y S Rajasekhara Reddy was alive, there were instances of House Committees being set up. It is not correct to say that we had an understanding with TDP,” Congress chief whip M Bhatti Vikramarka told reporters.

30 Council members retire

Hyderabad, March 30: Thirty members of the Legislative Council, constituting one-third of the strength of the Upper House, retired on Tuesday on completion of their four-year term.

Council Chairman A. Chakrapani and Deputy Chairman Mohd. Jani were among those who retired. All the outgoing members were felicitated before the House adjourned sine die after passing the Appropriation Bills.

Sambasivudu murder case: four surrender

Nalgulda, March 30: Four persons — Shakeel, Feroze, Abu, and Imram — from to the Old City of Hyderabad and claiming to have murdered Sambasivudu, former Maoist leader and polit bureau member of the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), on Saturday night, surrendered to the police at Choutuppal police station, about 50 km from here, on Tuesday.
