Anantapur, April 07: Satya Sai Central Trust member and retired Supreme Court judge justice PN Bhagwati has been made the vice-chancellor of Satya Sai Institute of Higher Learning.

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the trust members held at Sai Kulwanth Hall in Prashantinilayam on Friday.

CB catches VRO, tahsildar taking bribe

Hyderabad, April 07: Two government officials were caught taking bribe by the Anti- Corruption Bureau (ACB) sleuths in separate incidents.

The village revenue officer (VRO) of Rameshwarapally in Biknoor mandal of Nizamabad, A Narsinga Rao, was caught on Friday morning in the gram panchayat office when he took Rs 4,000 bribe from a person for mutation of agricultural land of the latter to his sister.

Jagan condemns attack on Dalitwada

Kadapa, April 07: YSR Congress Party chief YS Jaganmohan Reddy has warned his rival candidate and minister DL Ravindra Reddy and his followers against threatening or attacking people for supporting the YSR Congress.

On Thursday night Ravindra Reddy and his followers allegedly raided a Dalitwada in Tudumuladinne village, broke open the doors of some houses and threatened the people of dire consequences if they did not vote for the Congress.

Two history-sheeters nabbed

Hyderabad, April 07: Two notorious rowdies were nabbed by Task Force sleuths in separate raids on Thursday and lethal weapons seized. In the first catch, South Zone Task Force sleuths nabbed a gangster, Md Anwar alias Annu Ba of Kalapathar who is the member of Khaiser gang of Mallepally. Anwar and his associates committed pick-pocketing on instructions of Khaiser.

Girl stoned to death by family

Hyderabad, April 07: In a suspected case of ‘honour killing’, a young girl was forcibly taken away from her husband’s house by her relatives and was later stoned to death and set ablaze in a village near Shadnagar of Mahabubnagar district on Thursday.

The 18-year-old girl, Madhavi, had married a boy of another caste against the wishes of her family which allegedly prompted them to kill her, police said. The incident took place in Kakanoor village under the Keshampet police limits.

PRP MLA returns to party from Jagan camp

Hyderabad, April 07: Two days ahead of his byelection in Kadapa, Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy suffered a setback with Praja Rajyam legislator Katasani Ramireddy deciding to desert his camp and go home.

The MLA is said to have changed his mind for fear of losing his membership of the Assembly. His party, the Praja Rajyam, has filed a disqualification petition against him with the deputy speaker who in turn served the MLA a show-cause notice asking why he should not be sacked.

IT department employee’s house burgled

Hyderabad, April 07: Property offenders broke into the house of an income tax employee in broad daylight and stole 20 tola gold ornaments and some cash after gagging and tying up two inmates of the house at Keesara today.

The burglary took place in the house of Ramesh, a class IV employee in Income Tax department. He stays with his elderly mother, Balanarasamma, wife Lalitha and two daughters, 22-year-old Jyothi and 20-year-old Prema. Around 10 a.m, Ramesh left for office while Lalitha was away from house when three persons entered the house.

PG medical admissions for in-service Ccandidates

Vijayawada, April 07: NTR University of Health Sciences has invited applications from in-service candidates for admission to post graduation medical degree/diploma courses. Applications have been invited for vacant (leftover) seats in clinical, pre and paraclinical subjects after the end of selections as per GO No 83 HM&FW. The selections will be done strictly based on merit in MBBS, according to university registrar T Venugopala Rao.

Two treasure troves unearthed in Kurnool

Hyderabad, April 07: A day before the auspicious Akshaya Tritiya, it was a windfall of gold for the department of archaeology and museums.

Two treasure troves of ancient gold ornaments were discovered in Kurnool district and they were handed over to the department.

In the first incident, workers stumbled upon a copper vase at a depth of one metre under the ground during the construction of a house belonging to T Subbarayudu at Racharla in Peapally mandal in the district.

There were 20 gold coins, each weighing 3.40 gms, in the vase.

TTD does trial run of ‘moving carpet’

Tirupati, April 07: To address the frequent complaints from devotees ‘of being pushed and not able to have even a fleeting glimpse of Lord Venkateswara properly’ during Mahalaghu darshan, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams is contemplating introducing ‘Automated Moving Platform’ (AMP) or the ‘Moving Carpet’.

A trial run of the AMP was carried out at a replica of ‘Ananda Nilayam’ constructed at Dhyanaramam near Alipiri for SV Bhakti Channel on Thursday. Executive officer IYR Krishna Rao and other officials were shown a demonstration with an AMP prototype.

IED-like object found at Uppal stadium

A hand-written note beside the object warned of a terror strike in Hyderabad, which sources say, is being dismissed as a prank.

Jilted love strangles B-Ed student

Khammam, May 07: Khammam Rural police on Saturday exhumed the body of a final year B-Ed student from the premises of her Annie Besant B-Ed College in Ponnekal where she was buried after being strangled by the attender of her college after she refused to marry him.

According to Sub-Inspector Raji Reddy, the girl, 22-year-old Sarika, was strangled by the attender Raju who was in love with her after she revealed to him that her parents were looking for a prospective groom from her own caste and she was in agreement with their wishes.

Campaigning ends for Kadapa byelections

Hyderabad, April 07: Campaigning ended Friday evening for byelections to Kadapa Lok Sabha and Pulivendula assembly constituencies in Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh.

Polling will be held on Sunday in the byelections caused by the resignation of Y S Jaganmohan Reddy and his mother Y S Vijayalaxmi as MP and state legislator last year.

Both the constituencies are witnessing a three-cornered contest. Jagan, as Jaganmohan Reddy is popularly known, and his mother are seeking re-election as candidates of their newly-floated YSR Congress party.

Bitten by dogs, killed by lack of medicare

Rajhmundary, April 07: Dogs only bite them but people are virtually killed by scarcity of anti-rabies and tissue culture vaccines at government hospitals, uncaring staff and an indifferent government.

The death of a 10-year-old girl, Anusha, at the government hospital here on Wednesday is the latest example of the state of things in the district. She was bitten by a dog on March 25 and her mother took her immediately to the hospital.

Police seize Rs.51 lakh In Kadapa

Kadapa, April 07: Yet again, a huge amount of cash, `51 lakh, being carried without proper documentation was seized at two different places in Kadapa district on Thursday, three days ahead of the bypolls.

Police suspect that the cash is meant for distribution to voters in Pulivendula Assembly and Kadapa Lok Sabha constituencies.

Kadapa one town circle inspector Ghouse, SI Srinivasulu and their men conducted vehicle checks at the Seven Road Junction in the town and found one Subramanyam Swamy carrying `37 lakh in his car.

1,357 PG medical seats filled

Vijayawada, April 07: The NTR University of Health Sciences has filled 1,357 of 1,620 postgraduate medical seats by 9 pm on Thursday in the first phase of counselling.

Till Wednesday 1,143 seats, including 715 for clinical degree, 176 for non-clinical degree, 240 for clinical diploma and 12 for non-clinical diploma courses, had been filled up.
