Jupally resumes padayatra in Aruna’s constituency

Mahabubnagar, June 12: Former Endowments minister Jupally Krishna Rao resumed his padayatra from Ayija mandal under Gadwal Assembly constituency, weeks after it was suspended after tension between his and Information Minister DK Aruna’s supporters clashed.

Mr Krishna Rao and Ms Aruna had been taken under preventive custody by the police to prevent the situation deteriorating further after the Information and Public Relations Minister had objected to the then Endowments Minister going ahead with the padayatra in her constituency.

Eye centre to be inaugurated in port city

Visakhapatnam, Jun 11 (UNI) Union Minister for State Human Resources Development D Purandeswari will inaugurate Hyderabad-based L V Prasad Eye Institute in the port city here.

Speaking to the media Mr G N Rao, Chairman of the institute said total 1.3 crore surgeries have been performed in the state, out of which 42 per cent were absolutely free of cost.

Galla Aruna laid lathi charge on TD protesters

Hyderabad, June 10: The minister for mines and geology, Ms Galla Aruna Kumari, on Thursday grabbed a lathi from a policeman and laid about her left and right, injuring several Telugu Desam protesters who were attempting to disrupt the Rythu Sadassu, a farmers’ meeting the minister and others were attending at the SV Agriculture College grounds.

Ms Aruna Kumari was probably merely venting her pent up anger at being forced to sit through the farmers’ conclave while the farmers lambasted the state government for its failures.

355 model schools to come up in Andhra

Visakhapatnam, June 10: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy today said that the state government would construct 355 model schools in the state, the foundation stone for which would be laid in the third week of June.

Addressing the media after his day-long visit here, the Chief Minister said each model school would be constructed at a cost of Rs 3 crore.

He also informed that the government has constructed 1,000 school buildings in the state which would be inaugurated in the third week of June.

Samakka Saralamma Jathra to be held from Feb 9

Warangal, June 10: The largest tribal festival in the country, which is part of Telangana culture, the Samakka Saralamma jathra, would be celebrated at Medaram in Tadvai mandal of Warangal district from February 8 to February 11 next year.

Announcing this before media persons on Thursday, Warangal district Collector Rahul Bojja, said that the tribal festival would see the Goddess Saralamma being taken out on a platform (Gadde) on February 9 from the forests and would be returned on February 11, a Saturday.

AP Minister to farmers: Adopt new techniques to enhance output

Rajahmundry, June 09: Andhra Pradesh Minister for Stamps and Registration Thota Narasimham said the farmers should implement new techniques to enhance farm output in view of changing trends in the agriculture sector.

The State Government will provide all possible support to the farmers badly affected by rains, cyclones and other causes, he told reporters after inaugurating `rythu saddasu” (farmer congregation) in Kirmlampudi Mandal near here.Rythu sadassu is a five-day state-wide government initiative aimed at educating farmers about modern farming methods.

Satellite study on coastal erosion in AP

Hyderabad, June 07: A satellite study on the coastal erosion in Andhra Pradesh is underway and its findings will be declared by the end of August, Union environment and forests minister Jairam Ramesh said on Monday. AP has the longest coastline in the country and environmentalists have been alleging that huge tracts of land in the coastal region have been gifted away by the state to private parties against the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) norms.

Rapist burnt alive by angry mob

Warangal, June 01: In an act of mob justice, a youth was burnt alive by angry villagers right in the presence of cops after he allegedly raped a girl.

The girl, who initially resisted the attempts of the accused, is battling for her life after the youth hit her with a hammer on her head. This macabre incident took place in Raghunathapally in Zaffargadh mandal of Warangal district on Tuesday.

Shutdown in Srikakulam town against power plant

Hyderabad, May 31: Protests broke out again in Andhra Pradesh’s Srikakulam district against an upcoming thermal electricity project, police said.

People in Sompeta town of the district in north coastal Andhra Monday observed a shutdown demanding that the government stop work on the project which, they claimed, threatens the ecology and endangers the livelihood of local communities.

Shops and business establishments remained closed in response to the shutdown call given by the Environment Protection Committee, a group of environmentalists and NGOs.

Bank loans to SHGs through Women’s Co-operative

Hyderabad, May 30: The Women’s Cooperative Finance Corporation will soon work as the nodal agency for mid-way financing of self-helf groups.

The government will provide a working capital to the corporation towards this.

According to sources in the chief minister’s office, the chief minister, while interacting with the chief executives of banks at the SLBC meeting, told them of his decision.

He assured bankers that the government would and extend the fullest possible support and cooperation in recovering the loans extended to the SHGs.

Vivekananda express chugs into Secunderabad

Hyderabad, May 30: Vivekananda Express, an exhibition train showcasing the life, works and teachings of Swami Vivekananda was opened by Swami Anupananda, director of Ramakrishna Mission for public viewing on Saturday on platform no. 10 of the Secunderabad station.

The exhibition will be open from 10 a.m to 8 p.m till May 30. The opening day saw a large footfall of visitors. Vivekananda Express was flagged off by Mamata Banerji, the then minister of Railways on January 12 from Howrah station on the occasion of 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.

Six drown in two lakes on outskirts

Hyderabad, May 30: Six persons, including four women, drowned while two others were rescued in separate incidents on the outskirts of the city today.

In Pahadisharief, six persons went to Ibrahim Sagar lake at Jalpally for a picnic today. According to police, a family from Moin Nagar, Mohd Fahim (45), Shabana Begum (35) and their son, Arbaz (11), came to their relative, Uzma Begum’s house at Ghouse Nagar in Bandlaguda two days back.

This morning, Fahim’s family, along with Uzma (20), her sister, Hazera (17) and their relative, Shabana (14), went to Ibrahim Sagar.

TJAC takes battle to Delhi, holds round table

Hyderabad, May 30: As part of its plan to build pressure on the central government by organising a series of programmes in the national capital, the Telangana Joint Action Committee conducted a round table conference on Chapter-VIII of Srikrishna Committee report in Delhi on Sunday.

VHR to tour North Andhra, Kakinada

Hyderabad, May 30: Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member V Hanumantha Rao will commiserate with farmers in Srikakulam district who fought against setting up of thermal power stations in their district. Rao will visit the areas where Nagarjuna Construction Company and East Coast Energy had proposed to set up plants.

During his 4-day visit, he will also visit Anantagiri and Araku in Visakhapatnam where tribals have been protesting against bauxite mining, Gangavaram port and NTPC Simhadri power plant, SEZ of Brandix, Kakinada’s SEZ and the port.

Monsoon may hit Andhra Pradesh by May 31

Hyderabad, May 30: The southwest monsoon set over Kerala on Sunday two days in advance and is expected to arrive in Andhra Pradesh by May 31.

The south-west monsoon has also advanced into most parts of the south Arabian Sea and some parts of Tamil Nadu, south Bay of Bengal and south Andaman Sea.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) officially announced the setting of the monsoon in Kerala on Sunday afternoon.
