Mumbai surgeon wins US award for anti-tobacco campaign

Dr. Pankaj Chaturvedi, a cancer surgeon at Mumbai’s Tata Memorial Hospital, has won a prestigious US award for his innovative leadership in the fight to reduce tobacco use and tobacco-related disease in India.

The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids presented Chaturvedi with the Judy Wilkenfeld Award for International Tobacco Control at its annual awards gala here Thursday.

The Wilkenfeld Award was established in honour of Judy Wilkenfeld, the founder of Tobacco-Free Kids’ international programme, who passed away in May 2007.

Sarabjit’s family wants Manmohan to quit

Holding both the Indian and Pakistan governments responsible for his plight, the family of Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh Wednesday returned home determined to pursue the case with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the Congress president and others.

The distraught family said Manmohan Singh should quit for having failed to save Sarabjit, who is battling for life in a Lahore hospital.

Ex-Pak generals warn army may react if Musharraf humiliated

Several retired Pakistani generals have warned that the military might react if there is any move by lawyers or the judiciary to humiliate former army chief Pervez Musharraf, according to a media report on Tuesday.

Former army chief Gen (retd) Mirza Aslam Beg said the army would not tolerate developments in the case of Musharraf after a “certain level”.

He was quoted by the Dawn newspaper as saying that certain quarters were encouraging lawyers to act against the former military ruler.

Two-day event to mark Ghalib’s death anniversary

New Delhi, April 20 (IANS) A two-day event will be organised on the 144th death anniversary of Mirza Ghalib to showcase his rich legacy, an organisation dedicated to the legendary Urdu poet announced Saturday.

“Yadgar-e-Ghalib” will be held here April 26-27, the Ghalib Memorial Movement (GMM) said.

The event will feature the release and screening of a film on Ghalib produced by Kathak dancer Uma Sharma. In addition, a Kathak performance, recital of couplets of the poet by author Pawan K. Verma, and a mushaira will create the atmosphere of a bygone era.

Gujarat to seek death for Kodnani, Bajrangi

The Gujarat government will file an appeal in the Naroda Patiya massacre case to demand capital punishment for 10 convicts including Maya Kodnani, a former minister in the Narendra Modi government, and Bajrang Dal leader Babu Patel alias Bajrangi.

In August 2012, a special court in Ahmedabad had sentenced Kodnani to 28 years in jail for the massacre of 97 Muslims in Naroda Patiya on the outskirts of Ahmedabad during the post-Godhra riots of 2002. Bajrangi was sent to jail for the rest of his life.

He was earlier associated with the English newspaper ‘Newstime’ of Eenadu group later he joined Siasat daily. During the Nizam’s rule he joined the movement against autocratic rule. He took part in the movements of the party and also went to jail. He was born in 1935. His family lived near the historical Puranapul darwaza for nearly 300 years. Sydney, Apr 9 (ANI): An Australian university took out his frustrations on Tiger Airways after being bumped off the flight through social networking giant Facebook.Nathaniel Martin took to Facebook after Tiger Airways bumped him from his flight from Hobart to Melbourne on Sunday, telling him it had been overbooked.

He said the airlines told him that he would have to be ”offloaded” and could not board the plane.The reason he was given was that he was the last to check in, even though he had booked the ticket a month in advance, he added.
