The winner of the largest lottery prize ever awarded to a single person in the US is a 84-year-old Florida woman, who showed up to cash in her Powerball ticket and collected some $370.8 million, before taxes.

Gloria C. Mackenzie’s ticket was the only one sold that matched all six numbers in the May 18 Powerball lottery drawing, which at the time had accumulated over the previous two months a record jackpot worth $590.5 million.

Bill Clinton paid $500,000 for 45-minute speech in Israel

Washington, June 4 (ANI): Former US President Bill Clinton has been paid 500,000 dollars for a 45-minute speech in Israel honoring Israeli President Shimon Peres’ 90th birthday.

The Times of Israel reported the non-profit Jewish National Fund gave the amount to Clinton for the speech, which he will be giving at the Peres Academic Center in Rehovot on June 17.

87-year-old US man skydives to raise money for sick great-grandson

An 87-year-old World War II veteran jumped out of an airplane thousands of feet over Ohio to raise money to help pay his sick great-grandson’s medical bills, on Saturday.

Clarence Turner of Fairfield, who parachuted along with an instructor, said that he wanted to generate attention for the plight of his 10-month-old great-grandson, the Fox News reported.

According to WLWT of Cincinnati, Julian Couch suffers from a lung disease that could require a transplant and is hospitalized in Columbus.

A fundraiser is planned for June 2.

Senate confirms Chandigarh-born as top US judge

Chandigarh-born Indian-American legal luminary Srikanth ‘Sri’ Srinivasan made history Thursday as the US Senate confirmed his nomination as a top US judge in a 97 to 0 vote.

Srinivasan, 46, currently principal deputy solicitor general of the US, would be the first judge of South Asian descent on the powerful appeals court for the American capital, often called the nation’s second-highest court.

A Muslim boy from Manipur has created history by topping the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) Examination 2013 conducted by Nagaland Board of School Education.

The boy, named Md. Helaluddin Shah, secured 96.16%, total of 577 marks out of 600. He is student of M.G.M. Higher Secondary School, Dimapur.

Woman flees to Britain, refusing to join Swaziland king’s harem

A 22-year-old woman fled to Britain from the southern African nation of Swaziland and is seeking asylum after refusing to join the harem of 13 wives of Swazi king Mswati III.

Tintswalo Ngobeni fled to Britain after she caught the attention of the millionaire monarch, known for his lavish lifestyle, the Daily Mail reported.

As part of Swazi custom, 45-year-old King Mswati III is permitted to choose a new bride every year. He is father to 27 children. The king’s sixth wife escaped from the royal harem last year, citing years of “emotional and physical abuse” by her husband.

Arunima Sinha, a former national level volleyball player who had lost her left leg after being thrown off a moving train by some hoodlums, created history today by becoming the first Indian amputee to conquer Mount Everest.

25-year-old Sinha reached the summit of the highest peak in the world at 10.55 am today, as a member of the Eco Everest Expedition from the Tata Group, an official of the Tourism Ministry of Nepal said.

Indian girl invents device that can charge phone in 20 seconds

An 18-year-old Indian-origin girl in the US has developed a potentially revolutionary device that can charge a mobile phone in just 20 seconds, a media report said.

The charging device has been dubbed a supercapacitor by Esha Khare of Saratoga, California, the Daily Mail reported.

Khare won $50,000 for her invention at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, held in Phoenix.

Khare has only used her supercapacitor to power a light-emitting diode (LED), but says that one day her invention will power cell phones, cars and any gadget that requires a rechargeable battery.

Bhuvanya Vijay, a girl from Dehradun, has done Uttarakhand proud by emerging the all India topper this year in ICSE class XII board exminations with 99 per cent marks.

Ecstatic over her results declared yesterday Bhuvanya said she used to study for 12-14 hours every day while preparing for her exams.
