Hyderabad, December 20: Hyderabad’s most popular event is in for an image makeover. It will be ‘Numaish’ now officially, though for the common man it has always been so. Authorities have decided to shed the ‘All India Industrial Exhibition’ label and promote it with the brand name ‘Numaish’.

Legendary Auschwitz sign stolen

Warsaw, December 19: Thieves on Friday stole the infamous Nazi German “Arbeit macht frei” sign from the entrance to the Auschwitz death camp in Poland, police said.

The sign, which means “Work Will Set You Free”, has become a symbol of the horror of the camp where about 1.1 million mainly Jewish prisoners died during World War II, most in the notorious gas chambers.

The theft which police said may have been ordered by a private collector or a group of individuals sparked widespread outrage.

Man Wins Lottery Leaves Wife

Florida, December 17: A South Florida woman whose husband won the lottery and then left her was set to be evicted from her home Tuesday evening.

Donna Campbell was given until Tuesday to pack up and leave the Miramar home she once shared with her husband, Arnim Ramdass.

“I have asked myself over and over what I did to deserve this, to deserve this ending,” Campbell said. Ramdass and several other airline mechanics won $19 million in a June 2007 lottery jackpot. Instead of sharing the wealth, Campbell said her husband did not tell her about his win and eventually left her.

Suri Cruise named most fashionable celeb child

London, December 17: Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes daughter Suri has been named the most fashionable child celebrity in a survey conducted by Britain’s specialist kids clothing retailer Adams Childrenswear.

The three-year-old, who has a designer wardrobe worth more than $3 million, has beaten the Beckham brothers and Madonna`s stylish daughter Lourdes to the top spot, reported a website.

Cruise and Holmes have commissioned the world`s top fashion designers to custom make their daughter`s outfits.

‘Bands at marriages could mean fines, boycott’

Lucknow, December 12: A community council in an Uttar Pradesh town has banned loud music and bands at marriage functions, saying they violate the provisions of the Shariat (Islamic law) and are a waste of money.

A panchayat (community council) of the Ansari community in Rajowala village near Shamli town in Muzaffarnagar, some 350 km from Lucknow, issued the order Friday night and hundreds of people from over 20 villages around Shamli unanimously agreed to abide by it, according to local residents.

Dogs from all over India bark in Nashik

Mumbai, December 07: It was a dog’s day out in Nashik. The Boy’s Town Public School ground, where the 23rd and 24th dog championships were held, was overflowing with canine calls as owners, trainers and breeders from across the country gathered for an All-India dog show.

The show, which was organised by the Mumbai Canine Club in association with the Blue Cross Society and the Kennel Society of Nashik, saw 310 entries coming from Nashik, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Delhi and Kolkata.

According to the experts from from Debrett’s, which publishes the A-Z of Modern Manners, ending a relationship by sending a text message is bad manners and texting is “too heartless” too.

350 items on a platter – a feast for the gods

Woman proves kidnapped twins are her babies, gets them back

Chandigarh, December 01: A woman here had to prove that she was the mother of 38-day-old twin girls, who were allegedly kidnapped Monday, before the babies here restored to her Tuesday, police said.

Simran, a resident of Sector 44 here, had to show the birth certificates in the local court and take its consent, before getting her daughters back from the police Tuesday evening.

Simran called the police control room Monday afternoon and told them that two women had kidnapped her daughters, Neha and Isha, after forcibly entering her house, a police official said.

Buffalo gives 31.32 kg milk, sets Haryana record

Chandigarh, November 30: A ‘murrah’ buffalo at a village in Haryana’s Faridabad district has set a new record by yielding 31.320 kg milk in the state in a day, an official said here today.

A spokesman of Haryana Animal Husbandry and Dairying Department said here this was the highest yield by a ‘murrah’ buffalo in the state so far.

He said the buffalo, belonging to Dharam Pal Nagar, was milked in the presence of sub-divisional Magistrate, senior officers of the Department, a senior veterinary doctor and village Sarpanch in a competition organised recently in Faridabad.

Bull on the Run Creates Scare in Sharjah

Sharjah, November 28: A bull that fell off a truck nearly spoilt Eid Al Adha celebrations of motorists and people in a Sharjah area on Friday morning.

While people out greeting friends and neighbours along King Faisal Street ran for life, motorists swerved left and right trying to avoid the bull running helter-skelter.

Eyewitnesses and police sources said the bull fell from a truck carrying animals to a slaughterhouse around 8.30am. Not realising that he had lost one of his prized cargo, the driver sped towards Central Souq.

Students suspended over ‘Kick a Jew Day’

Florida, November 28: Ten students at a Naples, Florida, middle school have been given one-day, in-school suspensions for participating in “Kick a Jew Day,” in which Jewish students were targeted for assault, according to news reports in the local media.

Parents and students at North Naples Middle School told NBC channel 2 in Naples that many students — all of them Jewish — were targeted in the attacks, which took place last week.

The station obtained a letter from one parent who said his daughter was a target of the attacks.

Astronaut’s baby daughter born as he circles Earth

Cape Canaveral, November 23: Astronaut Randolph Bresnik jubilantly welcomed his new daughter into the world Sunday as he floated 220 miles above it.

Abigail Mae Bresnik was born as her father circled Earth on his first space shuttle mission, just hours after his first spacewalk.

It was only the second time in history that a NASA astronaut was in orbit instead of the delivery room.

Mussolini ‘had 14 lovers at a time’

London, November 23: Italy’s fascist dictator Benito Mussolini had 14 lovers at a time, de-classified diaries of his mistress have revealed.

Claretta Petacci, a Vatican doctor’s daughter, met Mussolini in 1932 at the age of 20, and became his lover four years later. Her diaries cover the period from 1932 to 1938.

A ration card in the name of Mahatma Gandhi!

Hyderabad, November 22: Believe it or not – the authorities in Andhra Pradesh have issued a ration card in the name of Mahatma Gandhi along with his picture!

What is more shocking is that the card named Nathuram Godse, the killer of Mahatma Gandhi, as his father. Godse, however, has been misspelt as Godsay.

Chittoor district collector V. Seshadari has ordered a probe after the ration card, carrying a fictitious address, was detected during a verification drive in the district to wee out bogus cards.

Man who killed wife for waking dog imprisoned for 14 years

Sydney, November 21: An Australian who strangled his wife for waking up his dog and then went out for a drink at his local pub was sentenced to prison by a Melbourne court.

Anthony Sherna, who pleaded not guilty to killing Susanne Wild, was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to 14 years in jail for the 2008 slaying.

It had been Sherna’s habit to rock his beloved Jack Russell terrier to sleep each night. He told police Wild had roused the dog with her shouting and that he had pulled the cord from his dressing gown and strangled her.

Gunman didn’t know how to fire

Mumbai, November 17: Sanjeeth Shetty alias Lafda, a member of the Kumar Pillai gang, recently forced his way into the office of builder Ramesh Shah in Vikhroli (East), brandishing a 7.65 mm Mauser. But when he tried to open fire, the revolver got jammed. The funny side of the episode is that the gun had no technical glitch. Shetty failed to fire a shot because he had not been properly trained to handle the gun, a source said.

Pleasant weather in Delhi

New Delhi, November 16: Delhiites experienced a pleasant weather today with the mercury remaining at a comfortable level throughout the day.

A thin layer of fog enveloped the city early in the morning but there was no report of any flight disruption at the airport.

The minimum temperature was recorded at 16.5 degrees Celsius, five degrees above the normal while the maximum was recorded at 27.1 degrees Celsius, a degree below the normal temperature at this time of the season, the Met office said.

Woman passes driving test after 950 tries

South Korea, November 07: A woman has passed a written exam for a driver’s licence after 950 attempts.

Cha Sa-soon, 68, attempted the test almost every day since April 2005, the Associated Press reported.

She passed the written exam with a score of 60, a police official at the drivers’ licence agency in Jeonju, south of Seoul, said.

Mrs Sa-soon must now pass a driving test before getting her licence.

She told the Korea Times newspaper she needed the licence for her vegetable-selling business.

Pigs Menace: Flight Hit By Pigs Herd

Harare, November 05: Two people were slightly injured after a passenger aircraft of Zimbabwe’s state-owned airline crashed on take-off after colliding with a herd of wild pigs, officials said Thursday.

Trsnsport Minister Nicholas Goche told the state-controlled Herald newspaper that the Air Zimbabwe MA60 plane, on a flight to the western city of Bulawayo on Tuesday was about to lift off from Harare airport’s runway shortly after dark when the pigs ran into its path.

“The nose (of the Chinese-made 60-seater) and left main landing gear collapsed after impact,” he said.

Man, 32, has son aged 73, daughter 65

Panaji, November 05: Jose Pereira, 32, and his wife Albertina, 30, of Nerul, Bardez were shocked to find that the government had gifted them two children who are twice their age and citizens of the United Kingdom.

When Pereira collected his ration card after renewal last month, he found that Urban William Paul, 73, and Janet Margo Paul, 65, had been added as his son and daughter on the card.

Man eats 20 kg stolen veggies daily

New Delhi, November 02: It is a different kind of fetish all together for 32-year-old Nazim Baig of Lucknow, who munches about 20kg of vegetables daily, plucked straight from the fields, just to satisfy his appetite.

But his neighbours are not a happy lot, because Nazim steals the vegetables from their farms every night and often consumes them during dusk.

The Asian Age today reported that Nazim, who lives in Maulaganj village, about 90 km from Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh, eats about 15 to 20 kg of raw vegetables daily, when everyone is asleep.
