‘Appetite hormone’ may increase sex drive too

A stomach hormone involved in the stimulation of our appetite by activating the brain’s reward system may also enhance sex drive, a first-of-its-kind study has documented.

Ghrelin is a gastro-intestinal hormone that is released from the stomach.

Since the brain’s reward system also motivates us to seek a partner and to have sex, Swedish researchers found that mice that received a supplement of the “appetite hormone” increased their sexual activity.

It is already known that ghrelin affects the reward mechanisms that are triggered by food, alcohol and other addictive drugs.

Disturbed teenagers have sex earlier: Study

Boys and girls who have a troubled childhood are more likely to begin having sex before the age of 16, says a research.

The study also found that boys — but not girls — who are socially anxious or withdrawn also tended to have sex at a younger age.

The long-term study of nearly 2,900 Australian children focused on the kids’ self-reported sexual decisions.

The team found that by the age of 17, about 45 percent of the boys and 51 percent of the girls already had experienced sexual intercourse.

Flexible work hours improve overall health

Giving employees flexible work hours help curb sleep deficiency and improve overall health, researchers report.

“In the absence of sufficient sleep, we are not as attentive or alert, process information more slowly, miss or misinterpret social and emotional cues and decision making is impaired,” said Orfeu M. Buxton, associate professor of biobehavioral health at Pennsylvania State University.

For example, we may misjudge risks by undervaluing negative consequences and overvaluing potential rewards, he added.

Men think about sex more than women

A new study has revealed that the thought of sex occurs to men at least 34 times in a day, as compared to their female counterparts, who think about it around 18 times a day.

The new research shows that men think about sex twice as much as women, the Daily Star reported.

The new figures are being associated with the success of E.L. James’s erotic novel ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’.

For the research, students at the Ohio State University were asked to record every time they thought about sex, food and sleep each day.

Men with bigger bellies last longer in sex: Study

Next time when you look at your overweight partner, do not get frustrated as he is the one who can beat slimmer men at least on one front — in between the sheets.

According to a year-long survey involving 200 men in Turkey, overweight men with obvious bellies can last an amazing five minutes longer during sex than slim men.

For the study, the team from Erciyes University in Kayseri, Turkey, looked at the correlation between body mass index (BMI) and male sexual performance.

On an average, men with a higher BMI lasted an average of 7.3 minutes in bed.

‘Woman on top’ most dangerous sex position: Study

A team of Canadian researchers has discovered that the “women on top’ sex position is most dangerous for men, responsible for half of all penile fractures in the bedroom.

“Our study supports the fact that sexual intercourse with ‘woman on top’ is the potentially riskiest sexual position related to penile fracture,” the authors wrote.

For the study, the team looked at three hospitals in Campinas, a city of three million people in Brazil, used hospital records and in some cases interviewed the patients, Telegraph reported.

Men who live alone run greater risk of premature death

Men who live alone have a considerably greater long-term risk of dying prematurely than other patients, finds a study that followed 1,090 stroke cases in western Sweden.

“Among the conceivable causes are that people who live alone lead less healthy lives, are less prone to take their medication and tend to wait longer before going to the emergency room,” said Petra Redfors, neurologist and researcher at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg.

Shun bad habits together when it comes to health

If your wife finally puts on her shoes and hit the gym, it is possible that you will follow her footsteps for a healthy life together.

This is the gist of a new study that found that people were more successful in swapping bad habits like no exercise, smoking and drinking for good ones if their partner made a change as well.

“Now is the time to make New Year’s resolutions to quit smoking, take exercise, or lose weight. And doing it with your partner increases your chances of success,” said Sarah Jackson, lead author from University College London.

Men seek long-term relationship when women are scarce

Men seek long-term relationships when women are in short supply, a fascinating study has found, adding that this situation makes them more interested in settling into a committed, long-term relationship.

“When women are difficult to find, a man should attempt to attract and maintain a single partner and not fight with other males – it is not what women want,” the authors noted.

For women in urban environments, it may be challenging to nail down a single, committed partner.

Women in rural places may find it easier to find a partner ready to settle down and commit, they pointed out.

Many US college men deny rape but endorse forceful intercourse

Nearly a third of college men in the US admit they would have “intentions to force a woman to sexual intercourse” if nobody would ever know and there would not be any consequences, a shocking new study has found.

However, far fewer men admit to having “any intentions to rape a woman” when the word rape is actually used during the course of questioning, researchers said.

Approximately 32 per cent of study participants said that they would have “intentions to force a woman to sexual intercourse” if “nobody would ever know and there wouldn’t be any consequences,” researchers said.

Long working hours can lead to risky alcohol use

People who work more than 48 hours per week are more likely to engage in risky alcohol consumption than those who work normal weeks worldwide, finds a global study spanning across 14 countries.

Risky alcohol consumption is considered as more than 14 drinks per week for women and more than 21 drinks per week for men.

It is believed to increase risk of adverse health problems, including liver diseases, cancer, stroke, coronary heart disease and mental disorders.

Jobs which can make or break your marriage

It was found that while dentistry at 81 percent has the highest rate of people who are married, person with the job of a paper-hanger was more likely to be divorced, the Mirror reported.

Men less likely to agree with gender bias in science

A new research has found that men are less likely to agree with scientific evidence of gender bias in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines than women.

Previous research had revealed that gender biases limit the opportunities for women within STEM disciplines.

“It is critical to understand how people react to evidence of bias in order to implement successful interventions designed to decrease it, particularly given mounting evidence that non-stigmatised group members (white men) may respond differently than other individuals,” the authors noted.

Provocative billboards distract drivers

Commercial billboards with erotic images and highly emotive words distract drivers and may consequently lead to road accidents, says a new study.

A comprehensive study by the Metro Manila Development Authority found that “sexy” outdoor commercial displays could affect the driver’s speed and behaviour and cause road accidents.

The findings showed that such billboards have many negative impacts including endangering public safety, increased crash rates and traffic slow down.

Tensions with mother may affect sex life in adulthood

A strained relationship with your mother in childhood may put you at the risk of developing sexual health issues like erectile dysfunction in adulthood, a new survey demonstrates.

The survey, conducted by the Charles University in Prague, asked 960 men aged between 15 and 88 about their sexual habits like premature ejaculation and the duration of lovemaking.

They were also questioned about their relationships with their mother and the age that they fell in love, the Daily Mail reported.

Why stress, fear trigger heart attacks

In a first, scientists have come up with an explanation to why a sudden shock, stress and fear may trigger heart attack and they found that multiple bacterial species living as biofilms on arterial walls could hold the key to such attacks.

Hormones released during these events appear to cause bacterial biofilms on arterial walls to disperse, allowing plaque deposits to rupture into the bloodstream, the findings showed.

Men get more upset by sexual than emotional infidelity

In the largest such study on sexual and emotional infidelity, researchers from Chapman University have learnt that men and women are different when it comes to feeling jealous.

The poll of nearly 64,000 Americans provides the first large-scale examination of gender and sexual orientation differences in response to potential sexual versus emotional infidelity in adults.

Testosterone therapy helps suppress advanced prostate cancer

In a surprising paradox, the male hormone testosterone, generally thought to be a feeder of prostate cancer, has been found to suppress some advanced prostate cancers.

The scientists at the Johns Hopkins University’s Kimmel Cancer Centre also said testosterone therapy may also reverse resistance to testosterone-blocking drugs used to treat prostate cancer.

“These results suggest that testosterone therapy has the potential to reverse the resistance that eventually develops to testosterone-blocking drugs like enzalutamide,” they noted.

Meet the two men attempting 900m up ‘toughest’ rock climb in world

Two men are halfway through the world’s “toughest” rock climb in the world, as they try to free climb 900m up smooth wall of El Capitan, it has been reported.

Talk to your kids, even absent-minded conversation helps!

Absent-minded conversations with your infants work much better at improving their communication and problem-solving skills than reading a book to them or showing them pictures, says a study.

The positive effects of more informal activity of frequently talking to the infant while doing other things is greater than positive effects of reading to them or showing pictures, the researchers pointed out.

Past sex partners may decide looks of your kid

Can past sex partners influence the appearance of your child with a different male? Yes, say researchers. According to scientists at the University of New South Wales, this is because molecules in the seminal fluid of the first male mate are absorbed by the immature eggs of the female and then influence the development of the second male’s offspring.

“Our discovery complicates our entire view of how variation is transmitted across generations. It also opens up exciting new possibilities and avenues of research,” said lead study author Angela Crean.
