Amid the mushrooming convent schools, mosques still continue to be popular centres of learning at least up to the primary class level in Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh district. The trend is more common in cities and towns where Islamic primary schools are rare.

There are more than 100 mosques in Azamgarh city and around 40 percent offer primary education. A majority of students in mosques come from the Muslim community but there are no restrictions on non-Muslim students taking admission.

Every year in the month of Ramadan, all Muslims fast from dawn to dusk, abstaining from food and drink. Allah has enjoined fasting upon Muslims in the month of Ramadan. In Surah Al-Baqara, Ayah no 183 it is stated “O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that ye may (learn) self-restraint”.

This Hadith, amongst many other important Ahadith, has been given great importance by scholars by considering it as a milestone of morality. The Hadith highly emphasizes on the teachings of Islam – love for others what you love for yourself. Even Allah says, “The believers are nothing else than brothers.” (Qur’an, 49:10)

One of the rituals and superstitions linked with Nikah is the ritual of ‘manjha’ ceremony. This custom has permeated into Muslim society from the strangers and has nothing to do with Islam. Apparently we feel that there is no un-Islamic affair in the manjha function hence there is no harm in doing this ritual. But infact the community from which we have adopted this ritual has a specific purpose for performing that ritual and their superstitions have central place in it.

It is an undeniable fact that in every part of the world the regional customs and traditions have overshadowed the Nikah and Valima ceremonies. But it is more so for the Indian subcontinent. There are so many unislamic customs linked with the Nikah function. Two and a half months ago distinguished scholar of Urdu and an authentic researcher, Dr.Taracharan Rastogi died in Guvahati. Hyderabad, June 11: In view of Naxal violence in Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh police have sounded an alert on Andhra-Chhattisgarh border.
