Law soon to regulate foreign education providers: Sibal

New Delhi, July 13: Government will soon bring a law to regulate foreign education providers in the country and would not allow students to be “exploited” by them, HRD Minister Kapil Sibal told the Lok Sabha on Monday.

A law is being contemplated to put in place a mechanism to facilitate entry of reputed foreign universities accredited in their country of origin for further improving the quality of higher education and research in the country, while preventing entry of foreign institutions/universities of dubious quality, he said.

Maharashtra for separate HIV+ kids’ school

Latur, July 13: Guardian minister Dileep Deshmukh on Sunday said the administration is thinking of making a separate provision for children

affected with AIDS here.

As reported earlier, 10 children suffering from the disease are staying in the Ashram Sevalaya in the village, run by Amhi Sevak, an organisation

serving orphans and children inflicted with the disease.

The affected children were admitted in the ZP school due to which parents of 148 children out of the 240 have stopped sending their children to the

school.

BJ Medical College to get upgraded lab for H1N1 tests

Ahmedabad, july 13: The state Health Department has decided to upgrade the microbiology laboratory at the B J Medical College on the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital campus into a level-III bio-safety laboratory.

This comes following a decision by the Union Health Ministry and the National Institute of Communicable Disease (NICD) to upgrade 16 laboratories across the country, in view of the possible surge in the number of samples required to be tested for the H1N1 virus, also known as swine flu.

World Bank to fund secondary education programme

New Delhi, July 12: The World Bank has expressed interest to support the newly launched Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) scheme for improvement of quality of secondary education in the country.

The Ministry of HRD has agreed to the proposal of the World Bank and has written to Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) for further action, DEA sources told reporters.

The Bank at present also supports the government’s flagship programme, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), which aims at universalisation of elementary education.

Indian students flay Victorian govt attempt to ‘silence’ them

Melbourne, July 11: The apex body of Indian students here has slammed the Victorian government’s decision not to allow them to speak during a ‘harmony walk’ to be led by the state premier on Sunday to promote multiculturalism in the wake of a spate of attacks on the community in Australia.

“It is unfortunate that the government is trying to exclude students from any meaningful discussion,” Amit Menghani, President of Federation of Indian Students in Australia (FISA), said.

Now, panel to monitor fees in schools

Kolkata, July 11: To do away with steep hike in fees in private English-medium schools in the state, the School Education department will form a committee to monitor the fees structure in schools.

To discuss the issue, a meeting was held between School Education Minister Partha De and the representatives of nearly 20 reputed English-medium schools in the state on Friday.

Kerala to introduce PG courses in e-governance

Thiruvananthapuram, July 11: Billed as the first of its kind by any state, Kerala government’s Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management and the Institute of Management in Government have jointly announced the launch of a post-graduate diploma course in e-governance.

The information technology department today said in a press release that the two institutes have developed the course for capacity building at the individual level, and to create a good number of trained professionals to manage e-governance projects of the government.

Building crumbling, govt says close Urdu-medium school

New Delhi, July 11: The Ballimaran ward in the Walled City will soon lose its only Urdu-medium school.

As per a recent Delhi government order, Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Chashma Building, should be merged with another Hindi-medium school and students transferred en masse. Reason: the building, 52 years old, is no longer considered safe, with the lime-yellow structure crumbling at many places. The authorities thus proposes to merge it with the Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Kinari Bazar, Gali Barafwali.

AICTE approves 85 new engineering colleges for TN

Chennai, July 10: The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has granted 85 new self-financing engineering colleges for Tamil Nadu (TN) taking the total to 420 private engineering institutes in the state.

This includes around half-a-dozen exclusive women’s institutions.

This has made TN stand at second position after Andhra Pradesh (AP) with 523 engineering colleges.

While Maharashtra has 227 such institutes and Karnataka 154 as per AICTE records.

This will make the number of BE/B.Tech seats available in private colleges cross 1.64 lakh in the state.

Govt. to take action against 189 schools

New Delhi, July 10: The Delhi High Court has given directives to the government to take action against 189 schools, which did not abide by the order to reserve 15pc seats for students hailing from economically weaker sections of the society for the academic year 2009-10.

These schools were supposed to provide free education to the students.

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was being heard by the court filed by Non Governmental Organization (NGO) Social Jurist through Counsel Ashok Aggarwal.

900 crore for ‘Mission in Education through ICT’

New Delhi, July 10: Pranab Mukherjee, Union Finance Minister, has substantially increased the budget for the scheme, ‘Mission in Education through ICT,’ to Rs.900 crore in the Union Budget for 2009-10.

The Union Finance Minister, Pranab Mukherjee, while presenting the Budget on 6th July said that the demographic advantage, India has in terms of a large percentage of young population needs to be converted into a dynamic economic advantage by providing them the right education and skills.

e-learning at govt schools in Pondy

Puducherry, July 10: All government primary and middle schools in the union territory would be equipped with broadband facility under a Central government scheme to promote e-learning and computer-based education.

As many as 244 primary schools and 65 middle schools would be provided broadband facility at a cost of Rs 14 lakhs under the Centre’s Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (education for all) scheme with rural schools being the primary target, Chief Minister V Vaithilingam said in a release here today.

Correspondence courses becoming popular

New Delhi, July 10: The charm may still be with the full time classes but correspondence courses are increasingly being accepted by both students and employers.

“We had 2.1 million candidates for correspondence courses in September, 2008 and the number has increased to 2.6 million applicants this year,” says Sarojit Mahalanobis, Media adviser to VC, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).

UPTU counselling postponed to July 18

Lucknow, July 10: The Uttar Pradesh Technical University (UPTU) postponed to July 18 counselling for admission in various courses scheduled for today pending Supreme Court’s decision on the UP State Reservation Act.

UPTU filed a Special Leave Petition (SLP) in the Supreme Court after some colleges secured a stay on the Act from the High Court.

The apex court is expected to make its decision on July 17, official sources said.

“We have postponed counselling staring from today. The counselling will start from July 18 after the SC order”, a senior university official told PTI.

IGNOU signs MoU with HCL

New Delhi, July 10: A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and HCL Infosystem Ltd on July 8.

The MoU has been signed to start courses in computer science, software engineering, information technology and computational sciences.

The MoU envisages activities in a slew of areas, including jointly setting up an Education Grid Laboratory and Advanced Centre for Informatics and Innovative Learning.

Australia to join hand with Maharashtra for higher education

Mumbai, July 10: Australia is willing to have some collaboration in the field of higher education including research and students exchange programmes with the Maharashtra Government.

This was announced here after a meeting of state minister for higher education Rajesh Tope, secretary J. S Saharia and Colin Walters, senior official from the Australian Department of Education.

“We are taking this initiative in the areas of environment, agriculture, bio sciences and clean energy projects as India and Australia have similar climatic conditions,” said Colin Walters.

Distance education varsities to undergo accreditation

Mumbai: The Distance Education Council (DEC), New Delhi has set up the National Accreditation Committee for Open and Distance Learning (NACODL) to accreditate institutions offering education through distance mode on the lines of conventional universities.

DEC is the statutory body responsible for the promotion and coordination of the Open University and distance education system.

V. N. Rajasekharan Pillai, chairman of DEC, said, “Like conventional universities are accredited by NAAC, a statutory body of UGC, institutes of distance education will be accredited by NACODL.”

SC ticks off medical colleges for selling all seats

New Delhi: The Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday gave stern warning to three medical colleges for giving admission to students in excess of the 50pc seats reserved for them.

The SC has made it clear that unaided private medical/dental colleges cannot admit students apart from the 50pc seats reserved for them through the Madhya Pradesh Common Entrance Test (CET) conducted by them as this leads to taking away the seats meant for admissions through the CET held by the State.

Community Radio Station to come up at Manav Rachna Education Society

New Delhi, July 10: A Grant of Permission Agreement has been signed by the
Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (I&B), Government of India to establish, maintain and operate a Community Radio Station (CRS) at Manav Rachna Education Society, Faridabad, Haryana.

The Community Radio Station is likely to be operational within three months as per the agreement. With this, the number of CRS will increase to 51 in the country.

A letter of intent has been issued to the society after recommendations of Inter Ministerial Committee and seeking requisite clearances from various Ministries.

Maha college teachers to go on indefinite strike from July 14

Mumbai, July 09: Around 30,000 University and college teachers across Maharashtra will go on indefinite ‘cease work’ strike from July 14 to express their resent and protest against the state government’s failure to implement their several long pending demands.

Under the banner of the Maharashtra Federation of University and college Teachers’ organisations (MFUCTO), a conglomeration of 10 teachers’ unions in the state, the teachers will stop working from July 14 on an indefinite strike, Prof C R Sadasivan, the Federation president told media here today.

Accused Delhi terrorist seeks bail to appear in MBA exam

New Delhi, July 09: A suspected Indian Mujahideen (IM) terrorist held for his involvement in the Sep 13 Delhi serial blasts on Wednesday sought bail from the Delhi High Court to appear in his final semester MBA exam.

Saquib Nisar, in custody since Sep 20, stated his examinations were scheduled to start on July 18.

The court had earlier refused to grant him interim bail when he was to appear in the fifth semester exam and had allowed him to write his paper from jail.

IGNOU inks deal to extend e-learning in east

New Delhi, July 09: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) on Wednesday signed a deal with the government’s Department of Information and Technology to facilitate e-learning in east India’s rural areas and optimise the use of technology to provide education in the region.

IGNOU Vice-Chancellor V.N. Rajashekharan Pillai signed the deal with the IT department’s local facilitator in the east – Srei Shahaj E-Village Ltd – at a function at the India Habitat Centre here.
