City schools to open an hour late today

Ludhiana, July 22: The Nabha Circle Education office has issued instructions to change school timings only for Wednesday on account of solar eclipse.

Disclosing this Amarjit Kaur, District Education Officer (Secondary), Ludhiana, said, “We got a telephonic message from the circle directing us to open schools from 9 am to 2 pm due to solar eclipse.”

She said, “As we got the order around 4:30 pm, city schools had closed for the day by then but I have personally informed many school principals.”

Deutsche Welle to broadcast educational programmes in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, July 21: Deutsche Welle, Germany’s international broadcaster, Tuesday signed an agreement with the Kerala government to telecast educational programmes for school children in the state.
Under the agreement, educational television programmes from Deutsche Welle will be beamed on VICTERS (Virtual Class Technology on Edusat for Rural Schools), the educational television channel of the Kerala government’s department of education, operated by the state’s IT@School Project.

HRD minister orders probe against AMU VC

New Delhi, July 21: The charges of financial, administrative and academic impropriety against P. K. Abdul Aziz, Vice-Chancellor (VC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has instigated Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry to order probe against Prof. Aziz.

HRD minister Kapil Sibal has confirmed the order.

However, according to the sources, the probe was ordered after Prof. Aziz failed to provide a satisfactory response to the show cause notice issued by the President, who is a visitor of AMU.

Sarvodaya Schools to get 35000 more seats

New Delhi, July 21: In a major relief to parents worried about the admission of their wards in nursery classes, the Delhi Government had announced the addition of 35,000 seats to the primary classes in Sarvodaya Vidyalayas in the current session.

As per a statement released by the Government on Monday, 35K more students will get admissions in nearly 375 Sarvodaya Vidyalayas in the 2009-10 session.

“The demand for admission has increased in last few years, so we decided to increase the number of seats to provide relief to the parents,” said Chandra Bhushan Kumar, Director Education.

Unanimous Rajya Sabha nod for Right to Education Bill

New Delhi, July 21: With the government warning of “disastrous consequences” if a landmark bill for providing free and compulsory education to children aged 6-14 was not passed, the Rajya Sabha on Monday gave the measure its unanimous approval — but only 56 members were present at the time of voting.

“We are sitting on a great opportunity. We need to grasp it. If we lose it, the consequences will be disastrous,” Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal said while winding up the five-hour debate on The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Bill.

Admission in Pharmacy now on the basis of XII marks

Jaipur, July 21: Rajasthan University of Health Science (RUHS) will now give admission in pharmacy courses on the basis of marks obtained in XII exams from this year. The decision to abolish pre-pharmacy test is taken in a meeting held in presence of Dean, faculty of Pharmacy and officials of central admission committee.

Andhra Pradesh varsity signs MoU with University of Massachusetts

Guntur, July 21: A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Vignan University and University of Massachusetts, Lowell, USA.

The MoU has been signed for twinning programmes.

IITs, IIMs may open campuses abroad

New Delhi, July 21: Shifting from its earlier stand, the government on Tuesday indicated that it may allow the IITs and IIMs to open campuses in foreign countries.

Minister of State for Human Resource Development D Purandeswari told the Rajya Sabha that government would be open to idea of allowing the IITs and IIMs to set up campuses in foreign countries once they improve their faculty positions.

‘Govt to aid pvt schools that give 25% quota to poor’

New Delhi, July 21: Government will compensate all private schools which provide 25 per cent reservation to poor students in admission, HRD Minister Kapil Sibal informed the Rajya Sabha Tuesday.

He said though the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Bill 2008 was yet to become a law, action will be taken against whoever violated it.

Sibal also said stern action would be taken against any private school in the capital violating the Delhi High Court directive to provide 15 per cent quota in admission to children belonging to weaker sections.

Govt hikes seats for primary students in govt schools by 35,000

New Delhi, July 21: The Delhi government has increased the number of seats for primary students from nursery to class V by over 35,000. Now, each class will have 10 more students as compared to the last year.

Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely said a circular in this regard has already been issued to the schools concerned which would ensure admission to more than 35,000 students in the 375 Sarvodaya Vidyalayas from nursery to Class V.

From the current session, instead of 40, 50 students would be admitted in the primary section of each government school.

A.P. Topped in ragging list

New Delhi, July 21: Despite sustained campaigns by the media and government, ragging appears to be going on unbated in India with 88 cases and 12 deaths being reported in the last one year, according to a new study.

Andhra Pradesh topped the list with 12 ragging cases, followed by West Bengal(10), Uttar Pradesh (10) and Punjab (8), the report on Monday released by anti-ragging NGO Coalition to Uproot Ragging from Education claimed.

Clinton makes light of losing US presidential race

New Delhi, July 20: ‘You can say that to me,’ said Hillary Clinton, smiling broadly while replying to a student’s query on whether she had been ‘deprived’ of the US presidential post because of her gender.

But the next moment, the US Secretary of State, on a more serious note, said: ‘I am very grateful of the experiences that I have had. When I was the president of the college government, I could have never imagined that all this would happen in my unpredictable life. Rajya Sabha passes Right to Education bill

New Delhi, July 20: The Rajya Sabha Monday unanimously passed a legislative measure providing for necessary and compulsory education for children aged between 6 and 14 years.

‘We are sitting on a great opportunity. We need to grasp it. If we lose it, the consequences will be disastrous,’ Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal said while replying to the seven-hour debate in the house.

The bill will now go to the Lok Sabha for consideration and approval.

Haryana honours meritorious students

Chandigarh, July 20: In a bid to encourage students of Haryana to perform well academically, Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda Monday honoured meritorious students and announced various schemes to boost the education system in the state.

Around 131 students were awarded cash awards ranging from Rs.11,000 to Rs.500,000 during the ceremony that was held at Hooda’s residence here.

35,000 new seats in Delhi’s primary schools

New Delhi, July 20: The Delhi government Monday announced creation of nearly 35,000 more seats in primary sections of Sarvodaya Vidyalayas in the national capital.

‘We have increased the intake of students from 40 to 50 in every class of the primary sections of the Sarvodaya schools of the Delhi government following good results of our schools,’ said Delhi Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely.

Lovely said the decision would result in admission of nearly 35,000 more students in government schools and it would be implemented from this session only.

No class X Boards from 2011: Sibal

New Delhi, July 20: As a part of its education reforms, the UPA government on Monday declared that Board exams would be scrapped across the nation from 2011 under the National Curriculum Framework.

“We have a system under which students are not subject to any evaluation of this level till 14 years, though some states have class five and class eight board exams. These will also be scrapped from the next year,” Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal told Zee News here on Monday.

Muslim kids were to sing Hindu hymns in school

New Delhi, July 20: Sanskrit verses are part of the daily prayer for Mantasha Khan (class IX), Inayat Ali (class VIII), Jofisha Khan (class IV) and 30 other Muslim students who study at the Shaishvika Vidyalaya, a high school with 269 students run by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

It’s not just the Medha Suktam (a Vedic hymn recited to strengthen the intellect) that they recite with perfect diction but they also chant the Gayatri mantra, Surya mantra and shlokas (hymns) from the Bhagvad Gita with equal ease, besides the Ramcharitmanas and the Hanumanchalisa.

J-K bans mobile phones in govt education institutions

Srinagar, July 19: The Jammu and Kashmir today put a ban on use of mobile phones in all government-run educational institutions across the state.

The decision was taken to prevent interference in the teaching-learning activities, state Education Minister Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed said.

“The ban will be strictly imposed henceforth and stern action would be taken against the violators,” he said during a community mobilisation programme for promotion of education under National Programme for Education of Girls at Elementary Level (NPEGEL) at Bider-Kokernag, 60 kms from here.

‘Love Guru’ dismissed from service

Patna, July 19: Professor Matuknath Chaudhary, better known as ‘Love Guru’ for publicly accepting his relation with his student, has been dismissed from the post of Reader of Patna University (PU).

The University syndicate, which met here yesterday, terminated his service after taking into consideration the report of an inquiry committee, PU vice-chancellor Shyam Lal said today.

Eight students in Andhra Pradesh arrested for ragging

Hyderabad, July 19: Eight students of the Sri Venkateswara University in Tirupati have been arrested and suspended for ragging their juniors, authorities said Saturday.

Police said the arrests were made late Friday night following a complaint by few students of the first year M.Com. course.

Following a tip-off, a team of policemen in plainclothes reached the hostel and arrested the seniors who allegedly forced a junior student to consume liquor and dance.

Additional Director General of Police A.K. Khan said the eight students were booked under various sections of Anti-Ragging Act.

AMU team visit off-campus site in WB

Aligarh, July 18: A team of Aligarh Muslim University officials led by Vice Chancellor P K Abdul Azis today visited Murshidabad in West Bengal for on the spot assessment of the 350 acres of land donated by the state government for the proposed off-campus of the university.

Pinki to smile again, to be given free education

Lucknow, July 18: Eight-year-old Pinki Sonkar, the protagonist of the ‘Smile Pinki’ documentary that won an Oscar, has just got another reason to smile with the Lucknow Public Schools and Colleges (LPSC) authorities deciding to provide free education to her.

The LPSC made the announcement after a section of media reported that the little waif still washes utensils in her village in Mirzapur, in order to meet the expenses of her family.

Centre to set up centres for advanced legal studies

Bangalore, July 18: The Centre would establish four world-class institutions for advanced legal studies and research across the country with an investment of Rs 200 crore, Union Law and Justice Minister M Veerappa Moily said on Saturday.

The Centres for Advanced Legal Studies and Research (CALSAR), to be set up at a cost of Rs 50 crore each, are being set up as per recommendations of National Knowledge Commission and expected to start functioning from next year, he said.

Failed two papers in X, go to XI: govt resolution soon

Mumbai, July 18: The education department will soon come out with a government resolution allowing students to take admission to Class XI even if they have failed up to two subjects in Class X.

School Education Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil has already announced the scheme, aimed at ensuring that SSC (state board) students don’t lose a year after failing in two subjects or one. Once the order is passed, such students will be able to appear for Allowed to Keep Term (or ATKT) exams after admission to junior college.
