Kirori Mal College expels two students for ragging

New Delhi, August 03: Delhi University’s Kirori Mal College Monday expelled two students and rusticated another for allegedly ragging a junior in the hostel and decided to file a police complaint. The accused, however, have denied the charges and said their side of the story was not heard.

The college authorities received a complaint from a first year BSc (Physical Science) student Ashutosh that he was being ragged and sexually harassed by two third-year students – Akshay Chaudhary and Hani Mohammad – in the college hostel Sunday evening.

Kirori Mal College to take strict action against two for ragging

New Delhi, August 03: Authorities at Delhi University’s Kirori Mal College Monday said they would take stringent action against two of its students accused of ragging a junior in the hostel and would take up the matter with the police as well.

The college authorities received a complaint from a first year student, Ashutosh, that he was being ragged and sexually harassed by two third year students — Akshay Chaudhary and Hani Mohammad — in the college hostel Sunday evening.

Govt to sponsor higher studies of poor students

Ludhiana, August 03: Deserving students of economically weaker, women and physically-challenged sections of society have a reason to cheer as they will now be able to pursue higher studies and become self-reliant.

Under the fee waiver scheme of the state government, some seats have been earmarked for such students in Gujranwala Guru Nanak Khalsa College, Civil Lines, said Devinder Singh, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development).

According to the police, Saurab Nandal of Rohtak town in Haryana studying here at University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET) was booked after the hostel warden registered a formal complaint against him.

PU authorities have also suspended the student until the probe against him is over.

US is number one ‘spam nation’

Berlin, August 02: The US leads the world in the sending of spam, according to a study.

The study by IT security solutions provider Sophos showed that spam originating in Russia has dropped significantly. It also claimed that some 16.5 percent of all spam mails sent in the second quarter of this year came from the United States.

Russian spammers – previously a highly active bunch – were only responsible for 3.2 percent of all spam sent, which puts them in ninth place on the list.

Second place went to Brazil (11.1 percent), followed by Turkey (5.2) and India (5.0).

School timings revised for Ramzan

Hyderabad, August 01 (Siasat News): According to a GO released by director of education, during the holy month of Ramzan, the timings of all the upper primary, primary and high schools are revised with effect from August 21 to September 21, 2009.

The schools will now run between 8.00 am to 1.30 pm inclusive of English, Urdu and Telugu medium schools.

In the meantime, A Laxman, president state teachers union, Mr. Narsimha Reddy, general secretary, Mr. Syed Wahidullah Husseini, Mr. B Bhujang Rao and Mr. Mohd. Abdul Samad have welcomed the decision of the government.

Main features of Right to Education Bill

New Delhi, July 31:The salient features of the Right of Children for Free and Compulsory Education Bill are –

– Free and compulsory education to all children of India in the six to 14 age group;

– No child shall be held back, expelled, or required to pass a board examination until completion of elementary education;

– A child who completes elementary education (upto class 8) shall be awarded a certificate;

– Calls for a fixed student-teacher ratio;

– Will apply to all of India except Jammu and Kashmir;

Court asks why poor student was denied admission

New Delhi, July 31: The Delhi High Court Friday issued notices to the Delhi government and a private school for denying admission to a poor student under a quota for the economically weaker section (EWS).

Justice Anil Kumar issued notice to the Delhi government and the Taksila Public School, in Shahdara area, and directed them to explain by Aug 10 why Apurva Sharma was not given admission.

Do we need deemed universities, asks Supreme Court

New Delhi, July 31: The Supreme Court Friday asked the government if the country needs any deemed universities, which have mushroomed amid complaints that instead of imparting quality education many of them have been fleecing students.

‘Why deemed university at all? Don’t you think the status of deemed university should be abolished in all the states?’ asked a bench of Justice Dalveer Bhandari and Justice Mukundkam Sharma, while hearing a lawsuit of 2006 questioning the misuse of the deemed university status by many institutes.

Former student slaps teacher in Chandigarh school

Chandigarh, July 31: Three former students of a government school here who were under suspension entered the school and one of them slapped a teacher while she was taking a class, police said.

According to police, a case was registered against the three teenaged boys Friday after a formal complaint was received from the principal of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 35, Thursday.

‘We have registered a case and started our investigation. We are raiding their possible hideouts and very soon we will arrest the culprits,’ said Anokh Singh, investigating officer of the case.

New Delhi, July 31: Sixteen years after the idea was mooted, a bill aiming to provide free and compulsory education to children in the age group of six to 14 was introduced in the Lok Sabha Friday with the larger target of making India a “knowledge hub” in the future.

Parents protest ‘forcible’ hair-cutting of students

Chandigarh, July 31: Parents of six students of a government school here on Thursday accused teachers of the school of allowing adult education students forcibly cut the hair of their wards.

Patna, July 30: After years of neglect, the 391 schools that were set up in Bihar to fulfil Mahatma Gandhi’s dream that one day all Indian children will have access to basic education are set to get a new lease of life.

State Human Resources Development Minister Hari Narain Singh told IANS here Thursday that the government has decided to spend Rs.50 crore to improve the infrastructure of the Buniyadi Vidyalayas (basic schools), about six of which were set up by the father of the nation himself.

10 BHU students charged with ragging

Lucknow, July 30: A criminal case was lodged against 10 students of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) after they were caught ragging their juniors, officials said Thursday.

Eight second year and two third year students of B.Tech (Applied Mathematics) were caught ragging juniors on the Assi Ghat by the university’s security staff Wednesday, BHU spokesperson Rajesh Singh told IANS.

‘The university has imposed a fine of Rs.50,000 each on the students. They have been expelled from the hostel for six months and barred from attending classes for 15 days,’ Singh said.

Fifty five new engineering colleges included in UPTU

Lucknow, July 30: Uttar Pradesh government has granted affiliation to 55 new engineering colleges, which will be included in Uttar Pradesh Technical University (UPTU) counselling beginning from today, official sources said here.

After inclusion of the new colleges, which have already got affiliation from All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and UPTU, 13,200 more B.Tech seats would be available in the counselling, they said.

The total number of engineering colleges participating in the counselling would now be 166, they said.

AICTE chairman suspended over graft case

New Delhi, July 30: Facing graft charges, Chairman of All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) R A Yadav was on Wednesday suspended by the government to ensure that the probe into the criminal offence lodged against him by the CBI is not influenced.

Union Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal took the step after Yadav, appointed as the chairman of the premier regulatory body in 2008, defied the Ministry’s instruction to step down or go on leave in view of the inqury against him in the case filed by CBI early this month.

At PAU too, girls steer the strength on campus

From 2012, only Class X syllabus for Madhyamik

Kolkata, July 30: From 2012, the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education will conduct the Madhyamik examination based only on the Class X syllabus. This will mark a departure from the present practice where students have to prepare the syllabi of both Class IX and X while appearing for the Madhyamik examination.

The state government had issued an order on June 16 to bifurcate the syllabus. It had also asked the Board to follow January-December academic session. The decision will bring relief to over one million students studying in about 10,000 secondary schools.
