Allahabad University students riot for union polls

Lucknow, September 09: Demanding restoration of the students’ union polls in the Allahabad University, some students went on a rampage, attacking public transport and clashing with police, officials said.
Police assaulted students with batons as they tried to enter the vice-chancellor’s office on the varsity campus.

“In order to stop the students from being unruly, we had to use force against them,” Superintendent of Police Awadesh Kumar Vijeta, told IANS over phone.

Seven Assam students suspended for ragging, assaulting teacher

Dispur, September 09: Seven students from colleges in Assam’s Dibrugarh town have been suspended on charges of ragging and assaulting teachers, officials said Wednesday.

The action has been taken against four postgraduate students of Dibrugarh University and three undergraduate students from the Assam Medical College in Dibrugarh.

The four students from Dibrugarh University were suspended for two semesters for allegedly assaulting some junior boarders of the hostel.

Sibal plans to reform higher education too

New Delhi, September 09: He ushered in radical reforms in school education within the first 100 days of his tenure as human resource development (HRD) minister.

Now, Kapil Sibal is set to change the face of higher education as well.

Sibal will initiate the second phase of reforms in the higher education sector with a number of laws, including one that will make taking capitation fee a criminal offence.

Ragging incident in HP college

Dharamsala (HP), September 08: In the first case of ragging after a law has come into force to check the menace, police have booked an MA student of government degree college here for committing the crime.

An FIR has been registered against the first year student — Manoj Thakur — on the basis of recommendation of the college, a police official said today.

This is the first case of ragging in the hill state after enactment of an Anti-ragging Act having stringent provisions like three-year jail or fine of Rs 50,000 or both.

TN govt has no plans to scrap class X board exam

Madurai, September 08: Tamil Nadu Government does not have any plans to scrap class 10 board examinations for the present and would wait for a formal request by the Centre in this regard, state Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu has said.

“We will take up the issue for discussion only on formal request from the Central Government,” he told reporters here last evening.

On government’s decision to implement uniform system of school education, he said schools need not have any apprehensions in this connection.

Proposed national edu body gets PM’s support

New Delhi, September 08: The HRD Ministry’s plan for setting up a commission that will replace existing regulatory bodies like UGC and AICTE is understood to have got support from PM Manmohan Singh.

The Ministry made a presentation before the Prime Minister on 28th August with regard to the proposal for starting National Commission for Higher Education and Research (NCHER).

The presentation was made by Higher Education Secretary R P Agrawal in the presence of HRD Minister Kapil Sibal.

West Bengal drops IT township project

Kolkata, September 08: The West Bengal government on Monday announced that it “cannot proceed” with the proposed joint sector Kolkata Link IT township project near Rajarhat in North 24 Parganas district following allegations of land grabbing and the recent arrest of managing director of a firm, which is a private partner.

This is a setback to the State’s plans to develop the IT sector.

“The government does not want to be involved in any illegal activity. Thus the IT department cannot proceed with the project …,” a release said.

No Class 10 CBSE exams from 2011, only grading

New Delhi, September 07: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will scrap its Class 10 Board examination from 2011 and introduce in its place a grading system, Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal said Monday.

“There will be no Class 10 board examination from 2011,” Sibal told reporters here. But he clarified that the exams would very much take place this academic year.

From 2011, the evaluation of the students would be based exclusively on a grading system which will be introduced this year.

‘Grade system’ in CBSE Class 10th board in 2010

New Delhi, September 07: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will introduce the ‘Grade System’ for the Class 10th from the year 2010.

The CBSE Class 10 board examination as optional to be introduced in the year 2011, a CBSE statement said.

The internal assessment system in class IX will be introduced this year.

Railway exam in regional language

Kolkata, September 07: Candidates can take examinations for jobs in the railways in regional languages as well as Urdu, Railway Minister, Mamata Banerjee, said here on Sunday.

The options available now are Hindi and English.

Ms. Banerjee did not attend the day’s programme to flag off three new trains from the city, by remote control from Kolkata station. Trinamool Congress chief whip in the Lok Sabha, Sudip Bandhopadhyay, did the formalities.

Railway exams in all regional languages: Mamata

Kolkata, September 07: Railway recruitment examinations will now be conducted in all major Indian languages, including Urdu, Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee said here Sunday. Speaking to newspersons at an iftar party hosted by union Minister of State for Tourism Sultan Ahmed, Banerjee said: “Those appearing at Railway Recruitment Board examinations can opt for any regional language, including Urdu.”

Right to education more empowering than right to vote: Ansari

New Delhi, September 06: The right to education is more empowering than the right to vote, Vice President Hamid Ansari said today as he conferred awards on 300 school teachers from across India on the occasion of Teachers Day.

“It has taken us six decades to provide the right to every child in the 6-14 years age group to free and compulsory primary education in neighbourhood schools. The Right to Education Act passed by the parliament last month is a historic step and probably more empowering, in terms of its impact, than the right to vote,” Ansari said.

Teenager stripped, assaulted during ragging at Delhi institute

New Delhi, September 05: Five students of a technical institute in east Delhi were arrested Friday for allegedly making a junior strip and dance as part of ragging and later severely assaulting him, police said.

“The incident took place at an Industrial Training Institute in Vivek Vihar area (in east Delhi) Wednesday when nearly 10 seniors caught the 17-year-old victim. They took him to a hall where they asked him to sing a song. But when he refused, he was forced to strip and dance naked,” a senior police officer said.

Elaborate security for Panjab University student union polls

Chandigarh, September 04: Chandigarh Police have made elaborate security arrangements for the Panjab University Campus Students Union (PUCSU) elections Friday, officials said Thursday.

“To keep an eye on any anti-social elements, our officials will be deployed at various sensitive positions of PU. Police are on vigil all through day and night. We are also raiding boys’ hostels to keep a check on any outsider coming to the university,” said a senior official of Chandigarh police here Thursday evening.

Thousands of foreign students march in Australia

Melbourne, September 03: Thousands of foreign students, including Indians and Chinese, have marched in Sydney and Melbourne seeking more measures from the Australian government on their safety, accommodation and travel concessions.

The protests were held yesterday in two states – New South Wales and Victoria – as they are the only states denying international students concession fares on public transport.

About 400 protesters marched through central Sydney to rally outside Parliament and in Melbourne over hundreds rallied to Parliament.

New Delhi, September 02: Learn Mathematics and Science through activities –this is the new mantra of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to help students better grasp the subjects.

With most of the students failing in Mathematics, the CBSE has asked the affiliated schools to introduce novel activity based teaching-learning process in classrooms.

The CBSE has developed activity books in Science and Mathematics. It has asked all the heads of the affiliated institutions to follow such books and make the teaching more fun and interesting.

New Delhi, September 01: Australian Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard Tuesday announced funding of $8.1 million for setting up the Australia-India Institute at the University of Melbourne.

Gillard, who began her five-day visit to India Monday, said that Melbourne University, along with University of New South Wales and La Trobe University, will invest another $2 million to bring the total investment in the project to $10 million over the next three years.

Australian varsity to train Indian primary teachers

New Delhi, September 01:Helping India attain universal primary education, an Australian university Tuesday joined hands with the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) here to train elementary teachers in rural regions.

The teachers training programe will be conducted through IGNOU centres across the country, authorities of the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) said.

Class 10 exams optional, grading system takes shape

New Delhi, September 01: It is a move that promises to revolutionise the school education system in India.

Class 10 Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) exams will now be optional. The CBSE class 10 board exams have been made optional from next year with Union Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal’s long promised education reforms finally taking off.

“The consensus that we have reached is historic. The states said that they were ready to move ahead together,” said Sibal after meeting the states’ education ministers in New Delhi on Monday.
