New Delhi, October 21: Delhi’s National Law University has started a postgraduate course in Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and patent law.

The course, to be run through video conferencing, will enable students to get absorbed in research and development organisations, government and non-government agencies.

No proposal to hike marks for IIT entrance exam: Sibal

New Delhi/Patna, October 20: HRD Minister Kapil Sibal today said there was no no proposal to allow only those who obtain 80 per cent marks in their Class 12 examinations to sit in the entrance exam for admissions to IITs as leaders from Bihar opposed any such move.

Making a statement, he described as “baseless” media reports suggesting that there is a proposal to allow only those who obtain 80 per cent marks in their Class 12 examination to sit for Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is baseless.

New Delhi, October 20: Scoring high in the Class 12 examination would not be a prerequisite for taking the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) entrance exam, Union Minister for Human Resource Development Kapil Sibal Tuesday said, appearing to backtrack from his stand a day earlier.

Sibal wants higher minimum in 12th Board exams for IIT

New Delhi, October 19: Opening a new front, HRD Minister Kapil Sibal today favoured more weightage be given to Class 12 Board exam for IIT entrance and felt that the required minimum of 60 per cent marks could be raised but left it to a Committee to take a decision.

Sibal’s suggestion came in an attempt to ensure that students taking entrance tests to the premier institutes gave equal importance to the secondary school exam and to check the growth of IIT coaching centres.

Revise eligibility criteria for IIT test, govt forms panel

New Delhi, October 19: Securing of 60 percent marks in class XII will not be sufficient for those aspiring for IITs from 2011 as the criteria is being revised wherein higher percentage would be required which will be taken into account unlike the practice now.

The government on Monday appointed a committee of IIT directors to suggest the revised entrance system under which marks obtained in class XII will be given importance along with the entrance marks.

Larger the IITs, larger the funds: Sibal

New Delhi, October 19: IITs having large number of students can now get higher amount of non-plan grants from the government, HRD Minister Kapil Sibal said today.

“The non-plan grants to the IITs would be linked to the students’ strength. Larger the IITs, larger the funds,” Sibal told reporters after the meeting of the IIT Council, the highest decision making body for the elite institutes.

The IITs at present are getting block grants from the government under the non-plan allowance head.

IGNOU to educate and train BPL youths in six states

New Delhi, October 19: IGNOU will start a series of programmes early next year to educate and train youths from below poverty line families in tribal areas of six states.

After clearing the certificate or diploma courses, mostly on Information Technology, successful candidates will be given employment. While the certificate programmes are for six months each, the diploma courses will be for one year, IGNOU spokesman Surojit Mahalanobis said here.

New Delhi, October 18: Are you planning to go abroad for higher studies? Check the UNESCO website to know if the institute of your choice is a genuine one.

In a novel step to check mushrooming of fake educational institutions, the agency has decided to include in its website names of genuine and accredited institutes of all countries.

About 30 countries, mostly Europeans nations, have already provided the list of their accredited institutes to UNESCO which has displayed them in its website, a UNESCO official told PTI here.

IIM fear losing faculty to foreign universities

New Delhi, October 16: With the government planning to bring a bill to allow foreign universities in the country, IIM directors today expressed the fear that they may lose their faculty to such institutions offering fatter pay packets.

During their meeting with HRD Minister Kapil Sibal, the directors wanted regulations in place to maintain level- playing field between foreign universities, which would set up campuses in the country, and the domestic institutions.

“We apprehending that the foreign universities may offer fat salary to faculty and our teachers may join them.

Bihar college fines student for ragging

Patna, OCtober 15: Authorities of a Bihar engineering college have imposed a fine of Rs.20,000 on a student and have withdrawn his scholarship for ragging freshers, an official said today.

Bhagalpur engineering college administration imposed a fine on Indrajeet Kumar and withdrew his scholarship and hostel facility after he was found involved in ragging freshers, acting principal of the college B.K. Choudhary said.

Indrajeet is a second year student of computer science in the college in Bhagalpur district.

BEO held for graft

Samastipur, October 13: A Block Education Officer was today arrested by Bihar Vigilance Bureau while accepting bribe of Rs 800 from a woman teacher at his Adarsh Nagar residence in Bihar’s Samastipur town today, police sources said.

Acting on a complaint from the teacher of a state-run school here that the officer demanded bribe for updating her service book, the bureau sleuths raided the house of Upendra Choudhary and caught him red-handed while accepting the graft, sources said.

Number of Indian students to Aus may fall by 50%:IDP

IGNOU to start courses in garmenting, fashion designing

Two lakh new IT jobs in Kerala in two years: Achuthanandan

Kerala, October 10: Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan Saturday inaugurated the third IT park in the state – Phase 1 of Infopark Koratty – and said that nearly 200,000 jobs in information technology sector would be created in the next two years.

Achuthanandan said a Cyber Park at Kozhikode, similar to the IT parks already functioning, would be opened soon.

‘In the next two years, we are confident that we will be able to provide two lakh jobs in the IT sector. Under the Cyber Park, we will have smaller IT parks at Kannur and Kasargode districts,’ said Achuthanandan.

IGNOU launches face-to-face mode of teaching

New Delhi, October 10: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) today entered face-to-face mode of teaching in addition to distant learning, with the inauguration of first newly constructed classroom block at the Maidan Garhi university campus here.

It’s time to review population policy, says Pronab Sen

Kolkata, October 09: Pronab Sen, chief statistician and secretary in the ministry of statistics and programme implementation, Friday stressed the need to review the present population policy keeping in view the recent fall in population growth.

‘Population growth has come down to 1.63 percent from more than 2 percent. We have seen consequences of zero population growth in countries like Japan. It is important to maintain a certain amount of population growth to maintain some stability,’ Sen said.
