28 students expelled for ragging juniors

Varanasi, November 06:Twenty-eight students were expelled from a college here for ragging their juniors and indulging in violence in September.

The decision was taken by the anti-ragging committee of the Uday Pratap Autonomous college here.

Notices were served to the students yesterday asking them to take their transfer certificate from the college office by November 15, Gulab Singh, the spokesman of the college said.

Recession buried, IIM back with recruitment plans

Ahmedabad, November 06: In a sign that the corporate world has put the recession behind, companies have started returning to IIM campuses with aggressive recruitment plans.

According to data released by the placement cell of the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM-A) on Thursday, the fourth day of their summer placement, big companies that stayed away from the campus last year are back this year.

Presently, 60 per cent funding to PU is by central government while remaining is done by Punjab.

12-year-old boy hits 439 in school tournament

Mumbai, November 05: At a school tournament which brought Sachin Tendulkar into the limelight 21 years ago, a 12-year- old boy smashed a record 439 runs in a marathon innings that included an astonishing 56 boundaries.

Playing for Springfield Rizvi School, Sarfaraz Khan also struck 12 sixes in his knock spanning two days that came off 421 deliveries against the Indian Education Society in the Under-16 Inter-School Harris Shield Tournament.

Hostel for northeastern students in south Delhi: Dikshit

New Delhi, November 03: A hostel for northeastern students will be set up in south Delhi, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit Tuesday said and assured the students from the region of full security in the national capital.

“No Delhiite should have any feeling of insecurity. We are here to integrate everyone, not to isolate anyone,” she said after a meeting with the office bearers of North Eastern Students Union (NESU).

The NESU office bearers along with three member of parliament – Oscar Fernandes, Takom Sanjoy and Thokchom Meniya – met Dikshit at the Delhi secretariat here.

Community colleges in India need government funding: IGNOU

New Delhi, Nvoember 03: Community colleges which are making their advent in the country need strong government funding, experts said at an interactive meeting Tuesday at the Indira Gandhi National Open University.

“IGNOU has tried to expand the scope of community colleges in the country. This is an alternative system of education which aims to empower individuals through appropriate skill development leading to gainful employment in collaboration with the local industry and community,” IGNOU Vice Chancellor V.N. Rajashekharan Pillai said.

US universities have eye on India

New York, November 01: Visiting Minister for Human Resource Development, Kapil Sibal, is testing the waters in the Unites States to discern whether American universities will support an ambitious Indian initiative to roll out 14 new universities focused on innovation.

“The young demographic advantage that India has needs to be converted into a dynamic economic advantage by providing the right education and skills,” Sibal told, on the sidelines of an event in New York.

But there was simmering discontent among a section of students, many of whom said the closure was “a clear sign of helplessness and lack of will to arrest the rot in the academia”.

AMU students asked to vacate hostels by Sunday

Aligarh, October 31: Aligarh Muslim University has asked its students to vacate hostels by tomorrow evening, after the varsity was closed indefinitely in the wake of ongoing agitation by students over the death of a colleague.

The university was closed yesterday with immediate effect till further orders.

“We have to resort to such an extreme step of ordering closure of the university since negotiations with the students has not yielded any result,” vice-chancellor P K Abdul Azis said last night.

Aligarh university shuts in the wake of violence

Aligarh, October 30: Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) was Friday temporarily shut down following protests by students over the murder of a final year student.

“The decision to close down the university and its maintained institutions was taken in a consultative meeting presided by AMU Vice Chancellor P.K. Abdul Azis,” AMU’s official spokesperson Rahat Abrar told IANS on telephone.

“We will convene a meeting shortly to review the situation and announce a date for opening the varsity,” he added.

India, UK to study barriers in transfer of green tech: Prez

London, October 29: India and UK will collaborate to study the barriers that exist in transferring of climate friendly technologies from developed to developing countries, President Pratibha Patil has said.

“The UK Government and the Government of India have decided to collaborate on a study to assess the barriers to transfer of low carbon energy technologies between the developed and developing countries,” Patil, who is on a four-day State Visit here said yesterday at a reception hosted for her at the majestic Guildhall here.

PU to let students see answer-sheets after evaluation

Chandigarh, October 28: In a bid to introduce more transparency in the examination system, the Panjab University (PU) Wednesday said it will allow its students to see their answer-sheets after evaluation, a varsity official said here.

“It has been decided to maintain full transparency in the examination system. Students will be allowed to see their answer-sheets as also of other students in case they have any doubt. They just need to pay a nominal fees to avail this option,” said PU spokesperson here Wednesday.

13 Aligarh University students booked for rioting

Lucknow, October 28: Thirteen students of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) have been booked for rioting, manhandling government officials and damaging public property during their violent protests against the murder of a varsity student, police said Wednesday.

The case against the 13 students and nearly 50 unidentified people was registered Tuesday night at the Civil Lines Police station, they said.

Plan for common counselling for IITs and NITs

New Delhi, October 27: With seats in certain national level institutes remaining vacant due to multiple counselling, the IITs and NITs could start common counselling, a move that would smoothen the admission process and reduce hardship of students.

At present, the IITs admit students by conducting their own counselling while the NITs, which are institutions of national importance, take students from the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) merit list.

Sibal to meet US officials on education sector

Washington, October 27: Union Human and Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal is slated to meet top officials of the Obama Administration later this week as part of the endeavour of the two countries to forge greater collaboration in the field of education.

During the visit of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, to India in July, education was identified as one of the pillars of deepening relationship between the two countries.

New Delhi, October 26: Marshal of the Indian Air Force Arjan Singh, former Chief Justice of India V N Khare, former vice chancellor Lt. Gen. (Retd.) M A Zaki and renowned historian M Amin will be conferred with Honoris Causa degree by the Jamia Milia Islamia at its convocation here on Friday.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah will be the chief guest at the function where 3,279 degrees/diplomas will be given away to 2007-08 batch students, the university said.

Altogether 112 PhDs will be awarded and 137 Gold Medals distributed among toppers.

DM orders filing of FIR against 127 schools

Etah (UP), October 24: District Magistrate has ordered that an FIR be filed against the directors of 127 schools for alleged fake accreditation and registration.

Acting on an inquiry conducted by Additional District Magistrate, Akhilesh Mishra that the schools were running illegally and the directors had allegedly used fake papers for land ownership and property transfer, DM Gaurav Dayal passed the order.

However, the directors alleged that the action was one-sided and the facts were not verified.

Our education policy is hostile to sports: Gill

Chandigarh, October 24: Union Minister for Sports and Youth Welfare M.S. Gill Friday said the Indian education system is not sports-oriented and it does not aim at churning out quality sportspersons.

“In my view, our current education is totally hostile to sports. I had also pointed out this fact during my meeting with Kapil Sibal (union human resource development minister) and also suggested him some ways to overhaul it,” said Gill, while addressing a gathering here at Panjab University.

Teacher absconds after sodomising 11-year-old

Lucknow, October 23: A schoolteacher in Uttar Pradesh has been booked for allegedly sodomising an 11-year-old student, police said Friday.

Kiran Pal, 35, who teaches English at the D.S. Public School in Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat district, some 400 km from Lucknow, allegedly sodomised the student Thursday.

The victim, who is a class six student, was taking private tuitions from him.

According to police, the medical examination conducted on the student confirm sexual assault.

Pal is absconding.

Govt against teachers’ training in distant mode

New Delhi, October 21: The government is considering to discourage offering pre-service training in distant mode for students looking forward to taking up teaching jobs.

HRD Minister Kapil Sibal held a roundtable on teachers’ education here on Monday where majority of the participants said teachers’ education should be given on face-to-face mode in view of the importance of such education.

The government will convene a meeting of the vice chancellors soon to discuss the issue.

After IIT, Sibal now wants changes in AIEEE exams

New Delhi, October 21: After he spoke of changes in the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) entrance exam, Union Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal Wednesday set up a committee to scrutinize the All India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE).
The decision was taken during a meeting of the National Institutes of Technology (NIT) Council chaired by Sibal here.

IT spending to rebound in 2010: Gartner

Bangalore, October 21: The global IT industry will return to growth in 2010, with technology spending increasing 3.3 percent ($3.3 trillion) after declining by 5.2 percent in 2009, IT research and advisory firm Gartner has said.

“The IT industry is exiting its worst year ever with 5.2 percent decline in technology spending worldwide. IT spending by enterprises is projected to drop 6.9 percent over 2008,” Gartner said in its latest outlook for the high-tech industry.
