Mumbai, Dec 14: The Mumbai Fire Brigade and the Fire and Safety Association of India (FSAI) have started a campaign to spread fire safety in schools in Mumbai. The aim is to teach the staff and students evacuation techniques and other measures in case of any fire, bomb scare or other emergency.

CBSE marking system to combine grading methods

New Delhi, Dec 14: The new grading system for classes IX and X introduced by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will be a combination of absolute and relative grading, said Professor H S Srivastava, Dean, NCERT.

While as absolute grading will be determined by the marks obtained by the students, it is the relative grading, also called percentiles, that will determine a child’s place among others.

Thai universities nix cross-dressing at graduations

Bangkok, December 13: A council of Thai university presidents has turned down a request from a transvestites’ advocate group to cross-dress at graduation ceremonies as “inappropriate”, media reports said Sunday.

Siroj Pholphanthin, head of the council of Rajabhat Universities’ presidents, said it would be inappropriate for male students to dress in female uniforms at graduation ceremonies, because their degrees are handed out by members of the royal family.

IGNOU to train Sri Lankan academics

New Delhi, December 12: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) will hold a training workshop for a group of academics from Sri Lanka’s National Institute of Education, the varsity said Saturday.
The workshop, ‘Curriculum Design, Development and Evaluation’, will be held Dec 14-23 here.

Bihar to comply with order on teachers’ appointment

Patna, Dec 12: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday said that the State Government would comply with the Supreme Court’s directive to appoint 34,540 trained teachers within a time period of six weeks.

The move signals the end of a long duel between the government and the trained teachers of the State.

Ramakrishnan receives Chemistry Nobel

Stockholm, December 11: Tamil Nadu-born Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, one of the three winners of this year’s Nobel in Chemistry, on Thursday received the prize at a gala ceremony here along with other recipients.

The other Nobel laureates in literature, economics, physics and medicine also received their prizes from Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf at a formal event in Stockholm’s Concert Hall. A record five women were awarded the Nobel this year.

Over Rs 393 crore for AMC school board budget

Ahmedabad, Dec 09: The Ahmedabad Municipal School Board — which presented the Rs 393.54 crore budget for 2009-10 on Tuesday — drew flak for its failure to come up with any original ideas for improving the education standards.

The board has relied heavily on the proposals of the Administrative Officer while enhancing the Rs 377.48 crore budget by Rs 16.06 crore. Moreover, there was no convincing explanation for the dropout of nearly 6,000 students this year.

Pune, Dec 09: Amid strong condemnation from the Catholic Association of Poona of the ruckus over admission at Alphonsa School in Kalewadi on Saturday, the Shiv Sena has expressed regret over Sainiks trying to remove a nun’s headgear.

Sena MP Gajanan Babar has expressed regret over members of the Bharatiya Vidyarthi Sena (BVS), the student wing of the Sena, trying to remove the headgear of the principal. He, however, said he was not apologising for the protest.

Parliament approves Bill to split J&K Central varsity

New Delhi, Dec 08: The Rajya Sabha on Monday passed the Central Universities (Amendment) Bill 2009 to bifurcate the Central University in Jammu and Kashmir to cater for both regions of the State.

With this, the Bill has got Parliament’s approval as it was already passed by the Lok Sabha.

During the debate, some members alleged that there was a political motive behind bifurcation, which would lead to similar demands in other regions of the country.

IIMs give hope: CAT extended by a day to Tuesday

New Delhi, December 08: The online Common Admission Test (CAT) has been extended by a day to Tuesday but all those students who could not take it will be provided another chance in a fortnight, the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) said on Monday.

“The last date for conducting online CAT has already been extended by a day to December 8, 2009. This additional day would allow most candidates, who could not take the test in their scheduled slots, to take the test,” the CAT committee of the IIMs said.

IIMs to review contract of Prometric

Ahmedabad, December 07: The Indian Institute of Managements (IIMs) would review the contract of US firm Prometric, after large scale glitches in the first computer- based common admission test (CAT) across the country.

The US firm was hired by the IIMs to conduct the first computer-based CAT.

PAU to adjust its examinations

Ludhiana, December 06: The Punjab Agricultural University has rescheduled the examinations, which were to be held on December 7.

Registrar of Punjab Agricultural University, Dr Raj Kumar Mahay said that due to the Punjab Bandh call given by some organisations, the varsity will remain close on Monday, the 7th December, 2009.

The examinations scheduled for the day will be adjusted later, he said.

New Delhi, December 06: In an attempt to encourage student-friendly examinations, the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), India’s largest distance learning institute, today announced that students of more courses would be allowed to pick the dates for their tests.

Under IGNOU’s “On-Demand Exam” scheme, students who have completed the minimum required study hours and submitted all their assignments can choose their date of examination according to their convenience and level of preparation.

IGNOU students can appear in test on demand now

New Delhi, December 05: In a novel way to help students appear in exams as per their convenience, the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has introduced an ‘On-demand examination’ scheme.

Those students, who have completed their period of minimum study hours and submitted assignments, can avail the facility, a release issued by the university said.

The results of such exam will be announced within two weeks of appearing in the exam. Students can choose the date of test as per their choice and preparation instead of waiting till the term-end examination.

CAT schedule extended by a day only in 20 cities

New Delhi, December 05: After the online Common Admission Test (CAT) collapsed in several places, creating confusion among thousands of B-school aspirants, the authorities conducting it on Friday extended the exam schedule by one day but only in 20cities.

“Prometric and the Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) have extended the CAT 2009 till December 8. CAT 2009 was scheduled to run for 10 days from November 28 to December 7, 2009,” the US headquarteredPrometric said in an official communique.
