Centralised admission for under-graduate courses goes on trial

Bangalore, January 12: The state department of collegiate education plans to introduce a centralised system of admission to under-graduate programmes in the state.

Bangalore and Shimoga districts will implement the new system as a pilot project for admission to courses leading to a bachelor’s degree in the Arts, Commerce, Science, computer applications or business administration in academic year 2010-11. A system of centralised admission for the Master’s programme at Bangalore University came into effect this year.

Students lock engineering college in Bihar

Bhagalpur, January 12: Students in large number today locked a state-run engineering college here to protest against the alleged paucity of teachers, official sources said.

The students forced the employees and authorities to move out of the campus and locked the main gate of the college.

They later held a demonstration in front of the institute and shouted slogans against the authorities, they said.

Let’s give colleges autonomy: Kapil Sibal

New Delhi, January 12: Human resource development (HRD) minister Kapil Sibal has grand plans to reform our education system.

After advocating a formula that would test the analytical ability of students instead of promoting learning by rote, Sibal wants educational institutes to be free from university affiliations. At present, institutes with degree courses need to be affiliated to state universities.

Select IGNOU courses to be recognised by UNESCO

New Delhi: In a move that is likely to boost quality in education and training, certain courses of Indira Gandhi National Open University will be recognised by UNESCO.

The university and the UNESCO on Monday signed an Agreement of Cooperation for identifying special programmes for co-branding.

Cold waves: some schools in Delhi to shut for 5 days

New Delhi, January 11: In view of the intense cold wave condition, the Delhi Government today ordered closure of pre-primary, primary and middle class schools in the city for five days beginning tomorrow. “Due to extreme cold conditions, Government has decided to close down pre-primary, primary and middle class (upto class-VIII) schools for five days,” Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely said.

Separate testing body needed to conduct exam: Sibal

New Delhi, January 11: HRD Minister Kapil Sibal today said there is a need for having a separate body to conduct university examinations, a step that will give relief to the higher education institutions so that they can concentrate on research.

“Today the universities in the country have a huge number of affiliated colleges. They conduct examinations and make money. The conduct of the examination puts a huge burden and as a result they fail to concentrate on actual things they are supposed to do,” he said at a function to release a book on “Engineering Education in India”.

‘Govt to ease edu sector norms to clock 10 pc growth’

New Delhi, January 09: The government today assured the NRIs it would remove regulatory constraints to encourage their participation in the education sector as skill development was necessary to achieve 10 per cent economic growth in the 12th Five-Year Plan (2012-17).

“It is quite logical to enable NRIs to play part in expansion of education and to improve quality of skill development. There are regulatory constraints, which may come in the way…we are working to relax them,” Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia said at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas here.

DOTE results October 2009 will be available on Jan 9

New Delhi, January 08: DOTE (Directorate of Technical Education, Tamilnadu) will announce the polytechnic results 2009 on January 9, 2010. The Polytechnic results 2009 will be available after 00.00 hrs.

DOTE will publish the results for Polytechnic October 2009 examination 2009.

Manipur schools, colleges to open after four months

Imphal, January 08: The four-month shutdown of educational institutions in Manipur was called off Friday following a meeting between Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh and the protesting groups.

Schools and colleges would resume classes from Saturday.

All educational institutions in Manipur have been closed since Sep 9 with the Apunba Lup, an apex civil society group representing more than 20 different organisations, demanding the resignation of the chief minister over the alleged extra judicial killing of a youth in July.

Free distance education for Sri Lankan Tamil refugees

Chennai, January 08: The University of Madras has chalked out a programme that will offer free distance higher education to Sri Lankan Tamil refugees living in Indian and Sri Lankan camps from the next academic year.

“Our syndicate meeting has decided to offer free distance education to Sri Lankan Tamil refugees who are residing in Indian and as well in Sri Lankan camps” Madras University Vice-Chancellor G Thiruvasagam told PTI.

The university has invited on January 18 Deputy High Commissioner for Sri Lanka in South India V Krishnamoorthy to discuss various aspects of the programme.

Engineering, management seats to be increased soon

New Delhi, January 08: The human resource development ministry on Thursday announced a set of reforms in the technical education sector to meet the growing needs of engineering and management seats in the country.

The government relaxed All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) norms and allowed new engineering and management institutions to admit more students.

The bio-metric impression of each faculty member will be taken to track his movement.

Two associates of HuJI militant discharged

New Delhi, January 07: In an embarrassment to the Delhi police, a special court today discharged two associates of a suspected HuJI militant for lack of evidence of waging war against the country and other offences.

Additional Sessions Judge K S Mohi let off Jalaluddin alias Babu Bhai, who was also allegedly involved in bomb blasts at Varanasi in 2006. The other person discharged was Nazrul Islam.

Sharp fall in Indians keen to study in Australia

Melbourne, January 07: There has been a sharp fall in the number of Indians applying for visas to study in Australia, a media report Thursday said. The development comes following a string of assaults, including two killings, on Indian students.

The immigration department figures for the period from July to Oct 31 last year show a 46 percent drop in student visa applications from India compared with the same period in 2008.

Sibal hints at change in question pattern to test intelligence

New Delhi, January 07: Taking forward the process of reforms in education, the government wants to change the question pattern in examinations at school level to give more focus on testing the intelligence of children, HRD minister Kapil Sibal said today.

The present examination format in the school system helps the students perform better by memorising the subjects, than using intelligence and their analytical abilities, he said.

Vocational education to go practical

Bangalore, January 07: The education department is planning to restructure the vocational education system from the next academic year onwards incorporating more practical sessions.

“We want to give them more practical knowledge instead of making them sit in classrooms attending theory lessons,” said Dr RG Nadadur, principal secretary, department of primary and secondary education.

Govt may hike PU valuation pay

Bangalore, January 07: The pre-university education (PUE) department has decided to place a proposal before the government to increase remuneration amount for the teachers who attend evaluation work.

“We are planning to increase the remuneration amount by 15-20%. But the matter is still at the discussion stage,” said an official in the department.

The official said the department had completed all necessary arrangements for the smooth execution of this year’s evaluation work.

HSC exams to start from Feb 23, SSC from March 4

Pune, January 06: The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) on Tuesday declared the dates of the SSC and the HSC exams. While the HSC exam will start from February 23, the SSC exam will commence from March 4.

This year there was confusion among students and parents regarding the schedule of the exams as a number of working days were lost due to the swine flu scare. However, the board has decided to stick to the schedule.

59-year-old woman passes higher secondary exam

Kolkata, January 06: She is 59 but her enthusiasm towards studying is as fresh as any teenage student. Nurjahan Begum from Cooch Behar passed her higher secondary examination this year from Rabindra Open School in the district.

Squeezing time out of domestic preoccupations, Nurjahan managed to appear for the exam to fulfil her long-cherished dream. She had passed her secondary exam in 1969 and then had to leave school after her marriage to Saidul Haq.

But Nurjahan did complete a short training course in nursing and got a job of a health supervisor in the state health department.

Free copyright control to help blind students

Mumbai, January 06: Technology has made it possible for the visually challenged to access the print. But there is little awareness among publishers and authors about the need to make printed documents accessible to all. An amendment in copyright laws is needed to bring about this awareness.

To make it happen, the Xavier’s Resource Centre for the Visually Challenged (XRCVC) has urged authors and publishers to support the global Right to Read [RTR] campaign initiated by the World Blind Union and Sight Savers International among others.

Major changes in ICSE syllabus

Bangalore, January 06: Sweeping changes are on the anvil in the Council for The Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) board rules and curriculum. The changes will come into effect from April 2010.

To begin with, a new subject, English Speaking and Listening Skills, will be introduced for high school students in grades IX, X and XI.
