Chinese and German professors in Padma list

New Delhi, February 01: It was their love for India and their long academic association with the country that assured them a place in the list of Padma awardees this year.

Prof Tan Chung, an Indian citizen of Chinese descent was awarded the Padma Bhushan in the Literature and Education category while Prof Sheldon Pollock, Professor of Sanskrit and Indian Studies at Columbia, and German Indologist Prof Hermann Kulke were awarded the Padma Shri in the same category.

Second phase of CAT-2009 concludes

Ahmedabad, February 01: Second phase of computer based CAT-2009 concluded on Sunday with around 2,000 candidates appearing for the re-test at 26 centres across the country, convener of examination at IIM Ahmedabad said.

“CAT-2009 second phase concluded today with around 2000 odd candidates appearing for the re-test today. On day one of the second phase yesterday, 65-70 per cent out of the 7,400 candidates appeared for re-test,” convener of CAT-2009 at IIM-A Satish Deodhar said.

CAT chides ICAR for harassing principal scientist

New Delhi, January 31: A principal scientist’s harassment at the hands of ICAR has ended with the Central Administrative Tribunal coming to his rescue, saying the procedure adopted against him during the departmental inquiry appeared to be “wholly illegal”.

“There was no reason for the ICAR to have made an inquiry against the scientist for the same charges already a subject matter of the inquiry.

World Book Fair inaugurated in Delhi

New Delhi, January 30: The 19th World Book Fair began at the Pragati Maidan here Saturday with \’India- The Nehru-Gandhi family and indigenous publishing\’ as its spotlight.

The nine-day fair, organised by the National Book Trust (NBT), has 35 foreign publishers exhibiting books from 15 countries. Spread over an area of 42,000 square meters, the fair has 2,400 stalls and 1,199 participants, besides representation from international bodies like ILO, WHO and UNESCO.

Inaugurating the fair, Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal said the event has a rich legacy.

11,000 MBA aspirants to take online CAT re-test

New Delhi, January 30: Nearly 11,000 MBA aspirants, who could not take the online Common Admission Test (CAT) due to technical glitches last year, will take the examination over Saturday and Sunday.

The second phase of the exam to select students for the country’s top B-schools, will be conducted in around 40 centres across the nation, including nine in Delhi.

4 million students to sit exams Saturday

Taif, January 29: Four million boys and girls are expected to turn up to write their first semester examinations on Saturday, education authorities have confirmed.

In Taif, Muhammad Bin Sa’eed Abu Ras, the Director General of Boys’ Education, said that 400 education supervisors will act as invigilators during the examinations. He said all the secondary schools have entered their data into a central system. This system will be used to store all secondary school marks, in all specializations.

Model rules to work right to education sent to states

New Delhi, Januar 29: The Right to Education (RTE) Act, which promises to make elementary education compulsory, is now a step closer to being implemented as the central government Friday sent to all states model rules under the legislation.

‘The model rules were circulated to the state governments in the meeting of the state education secretaries here,’ a Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry official said.

The HRD ministry is deliberating with state education secretaries on several issues pertaining to school education in the country.

8,000 students to take CAT re-test

New Delhi, January 29: Nearly 8,000 candidates, who could not appear for the Common Admission Test (CAT) for entry to the country’s top B-schools due to software glitches, would sit for the exam Saturday and Sunday, an official release said.

Nine centres, including two in Delhi, have been identified for students to take the online exam.

The CAT went online for the first time in 2009 but several students could not appear for the exam due to technical glitches in the exam system.

Uneconomic schools on the rise in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, January 29: The number of uneconomic schools in Kerala has gone up from over 2500 to 3661 in a span of two years, according to a recent study.

These comprise 1839 government schools and 1822 aided schools, the study conducted by the office of the state’s Director of Public Administration (DPI) said.

Speaking to IANS, DPI A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish said the last time a similar exercise was done was two year back.

Education key to India-UK ties

Hyderabad, January 29: British Deputy High Commissioner to Southern India Mike Nithavrianakis on Thursday stated that institutions in the United Kingdom were interested in tying up with world-class institutions in India, particularly in the south.

Education sector was most important in the growing India-UK ties as about 57 per cent of over one billion population of India was below 25 years of age.

Though a sizeable chunk of people India were still denied access to quality healthcare facilities, the country had been making rapid strides in all spheres.

New Delhi, January 29: After Class-X, the government is contemplating introducing a grading system at Class-XII in CBSE stream.

HRD Minister Kapil Sibal on said the idea has already been mooted and a committee will examine how grading could be introduced at Class-XII.

“This is in thinking process. No decision has been taken. After the committee gives it report, it will go the Central Advisory Board for Education and Council of Boards of School Education in India (CoBSE),” he told reporters on the sidelines of a conference on Sarva Siksha Abhiyan and other education programmes.

CBSE to send notice to Ruchika’s school

New Delhi, January 29: Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal on Thursday said there is a case for shooting off a showcause notice to Scared Heart Convent in Chandigarh, asking why they expelled Ruchika Girhotra from the school on account of non-payment of fee. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), to which the school is affiliated, is learnt to be considering the same.

Defence varsity to start courses this year

Gandhinagar, January 28: Chief minister Narendra Modi, who had announced the establishment of a defence (Raksha Shakti) university a few months back, is likely to sanction its start from the academic session of June 2010 with various diploma, under-graduate and post-graduate courses on offer.

Highly placed sources in the state government said, “The state government has planned to allocate Rs60 crore for the establishment of the Gujarat defence university and the academic year will start from June.

MP CM teaches yoga to school children

Shahpur (MP), January 27: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan here today donned the mantle of a Yoga teacher in a government school in the tribal Dindori district of the state.

Chouhan after exchanging greetings with the students who were overwhelmed with his presence in their school taught them the benefits of different yoga exercises like ‘Pranayam’ and ‘Surya Namaskar’.

When the children told him that they were not aware of how to do these exercises, Chouhan performed Pranayam in the class itself and later asked them to do it in front of him.

Scrap exam system: Padma Shri awardee for education

Panaji, January 26:Padma Shri awardee Rumualdo D’Souza has advocated scrapping of the examination system to improve the level of education in India.

Rumualdo, a Jesuit priest and brother of former Goa chief minister Wilfred D’Souza, was speaking to reporters Tuesday.

Rumualdo, who was among the 130 Padma Shri awardees announced Monday, said the education system needed an urgent overhaul.

IGNOU, UNESCO, JNU to launch PG Diploma in adult education

New Delhi, January 26: Three renowned organisations IGNOU, UNESCO and JNU have joined their hands to launch a flagship programme in adult education.

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), in collaboration with United Nation’s Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and the Jawarahlal Nehru University (JNU) have started a Postgraduate Diploma in Adult Education — Participatory Adult Learning Documentation and Information Networking (PGDAE) programme that would be opened from the July session.

Maintain status quo on 44 deemed universities: SC

New Delhi, January 25: The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Union Government to maintain status quo on the 44 deemed universities facing de-recognition for not being upto the standard.

A bench of Justices Dalveer Bhandari and A.K. Patnaik passed the order despite the Government’s assurance that no follow-up action would be taken against these institutions without the consent of the court.

The apex court also issued notices to all the 44 deemed universities as also their parent varsities to file their response on the Government’s decision to de-recognise them.

An agriculture university that can not pay its teachers

Lucknow, January 25: Teachers at Narendra Deva University of Agriculture and Technology, Kumarganj, Faizabad are on a non-cooperation movement since December 17 last year.

Though like the rest of the state employees they too want sixth pay commission benefits, their immediate demand is that they be paid salaries. For the past four months they have not been paid salaries.

So there’s no teaching, no exams, and no research work being carried out. How can there be any when all the 1200 students have gone home? Hostels are vacant.

Overruling state govts, UGC gave deemed status to 11 in blacklist

New Delhi, January 25: Overruling concerns of state governments or by simply ignoring their views, the University Grants Commission (UGC) granted deemed-to-be-university status to at least 11 of 44 institutes now blacklisted by the government.

According to the latest audit scrutiny report of UGC records, another four institutes were granted the status despite not meeting minimum eligibility criteria – and against recommendations of committees of experts asked to assess fitness of the institutes – while another four who got it did not even maintain the required corpus fund.

Patna schools re-open after respite from cold

Patna, January 25: All government and private schools re-opened in this Bihar capital Monday, after remaining closed for more than 20 days due to an intense cold wave.

There was some respite from the biting cold in Patna as the state capital recorded a minimum temperature of 7 degrees Celsius. The district administration had late Sunday ordered reopening of schools with new timings.

‘Authorities ordered all the schools to hold classes from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in place of early morning classes,’ district official S. Sharma said.

Jamia Millia Islamia to implement OBC quota in phased manner

New Delhi, January 24: Three years after the government asked higher educational institutions to implement a 27 percent quota for other backward class (OBC) students, Jamia Millia Islamia is set to implement it in a phased manner and is putting in place the required infrastructure to accomodate the additional student burden it entails.

‘This is a misconception that there is disagreement between the university and the government (over the OBC quota). There is no disagreement,’ said Jamia Vice Chancellor Najeeb Jung.

Grading system: schools, students on tenterhooks

New Delhi, January 23: Unlike earlier, the students appearing in Class X annual examination of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) this year will be awarded grades instead of marks in their certificates .

Till last year, the class X students used to get both marks as well as grades.The schools however are seeing red in the new system, especially for this year. The class X students, who are to opt for a vocational or some other course after passing class X this year are worried a lot about their future.
