New Delhi, March 15: Over three million students across India will get their exam results faster and more conveniently as the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) Sunday created six zones to decentralise the evaluation of answer scripts.

“IGNOU today (Sunday) decentralised the evaluation of answer scripts at five more zonal evaluation centers at Chennai, Patna, Pune, Lucknow and Guwahati in addition to Delhi,” university Vice Chancellor V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai said.

17 per cent of total budget outlay on education: Dhumal

Shimla, March 14: With education being its top priority, the Himachal Pradesh government has allocated 17 per cent of the budget outlay for the financial year 2010-11 on the sector, Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal said today.

The government has proposed 99 per cent subsidy under Pandit Deen Dayal Kisan Bagwaan Samridhi Yojana to BPL families, Dhumal said, addressing a public meeting at Bandrol in Kullu district.

After laying foundation stone of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalya at Bandrol, he lauded the organisation for providing free education to rural children in the country.

AMU meeting postponed

Aligarh, March 14: The crucial annual meeting of the Aligarh Muslim University court for electing the varsity’s next chancellor, pro-chancellor and honorary treasurer, scheduled for March 28 has been postponed, according to a varsity notification.

An influential section of the AMU court and the AMU Teachers Association had opposed the timing of the meeting on the ground that “senior varsity officials including vice chancellor P K Abdul Azis, who are facing inquiry for alleged financial irregularities, were trying to manage the election to safeguard their personal interests”.

CAT gives relief to IAS officer

New Delhi, March 14: The Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) has directed the government to terminate all departmental proceedings against an IAS officer after it failed to complete inquiry against him 15 years after the alleged misappropriation of FCI stocks. “The unexplained delay in departmental proceedings against the petitioner in the context of the allegations against him appears to us to be fatal,” the CAT said.

Govt forms committee to study possibility of CET

Hyderabad, March 14: The government on Saturday set up a committee of Vice Chancellors to study Common Entrance Test for admission into professional courses and optimum utilisation of the infrastructure in universities.

HRD Minister Kapil Sibal constituted the committee, consisting of seven Vice Chancellors, at a meeting here. The committee would also suggest ways for migration of students from one university to another.

AICTE gives undertaking in Kerala HC

Kochi, March 12: AICTE today gave an undertaking in the Kerala High Court stating its new norms for professional self-financing colleges in the country will not be made applicable during the 2010-11 academic year.

The new norms were not intended to be made applicable for existing colleges for their renewal of approval and would be applicable to only new colleges intended to be established this year, AICTE counsel told the court.

An undertaking in this regard was recorded by the court.

110 firms in IIM-Ahmedabad placement mela

Semester exams at OU postponed

Hyderabad, March 11: The ongoing semester examination of post graduate and professional courses of Osmania University, which were scheduled to be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, have been postponed due to tension following the death of an engineering student M Sai Kumar, who allegedly committed suicide for the cause of Telangana.

According to OU authorities, the exams of MA, MSc, MCom, MBA, MCA, LLB, MEd, MPEd, BE scheduled for yesterday and today were postponed in view of the tense situation that prevailed following the death of M Sai Kumar.

Class 12 English paper cancelled in Haryana

Haryana, March 10: Class 12 state board English examination was cancelled in Haryana on Wednesday after reports of question paper leak, officials said.

The exam was being conducted by Board of School Education Haryana (BSEH), Bhiwani.

“We got reports that English question paper code number 302 was leaked in Sonipat district and in some other parts of the state. Therefore we decided to cancel the paper and the next date will be announced soon,” a senior BSEH official told.

Why only Gita teach in schools

Bhopal, March 10: Minorities in Madhya Pradesh have criticised plans to introduce the Bhagvad Gita in state-run schools, saying the scriptures of other religions should also be part of the syllabus, even as a section of Muslim leaders sees nothing wrong with it.

The Catholic Church in Madhya Pradesh has said the government should, if it has to, teach the scriptures of all religions and not just the Hindu scriptures.

Now, school textbooks, e-module from Encyclopaedia Britannica

New Delhi, March 10: Encyclopaedia Britannica textbooks and an online study module will hit Indian schools from April 2010 in four subjects – computer science, mathematics, environmental studies and general knowledge, says its president Jorge Cauz.

This comes six months after the knowledge giant made inroads into the school textbook business in India with a cache of 30 books, 10 knowledge CDs and nine teachers’ manuals.

“The fact that the Indian government is stressing knowledge beyond the classroom and is devising a new school education system will help us grow,” Cauz told IANS.

Prometric blames virus, ‘no software flaw’

New Delhi, March 09: Prometric, the agency that conducted the computer-based Common Admission Test (CAT) 2009, confirmed on Monday that it was a virus attack that crippled 13 per cent of the 637 centres over the first three days of the exam.

“Few sites in some locations were affected by a virus attack from November 28-30, 2009. CAT could be held smoothly over the next eight days,” said Managing Director of Prometric India, Soumitra Roy.

550 caught cheating in Class 10 exams

Patna, March 08: About 550 students were caught cheating during Class 10 exams in Bihar and over 100 parents were arrested for helping them to cheat, an official said Monday.

‘In the past three days, 550 students were caught cheating during exams and 110 parents were arrested for helping them cheat,’ an official of the Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) said.

Nearly one million students across Bihar took Class 10 exams Friday.

New rules on PhD degrees this year

Mumbai, March 08: Though the University Grants Commission (UGC) had issued new and tougher guidelines for MPhil/PhD degree in July 2009, Mumbai University is yet to implement them.

Now, when a new academic calendar is set to begin in a few months, the university has decided to issue a formal circular to all departments and colleges on the new guidelines. “We will implement the UGC guidelines in toto,” said university registrar K Venkatramani.

RGTU time table 2010 is available, website unresponsive

Bhopal. March 07: Rajiv Gandhi Proudyogiki Vishwavidyalaya Bhopal (RGPV) or Rajiv Gandhi Technical University (RGTU) has published the time table for academic session 2010-11.

RGTU or RGPV Bhopal time table has been available on its official website i.e (http://210.212.146.100/index.php?option=com_docman&task=cat_view&gid=21&Itemid=142).

However, the website of RGTU/RGPV was unresponsive at this moment due to heavy traffic or some technical reasons.

Students will have to wait till the problem is sorted out.

200 headless govt schools to get principals

New Delhi, March 06: Over 200 government schools in the capital will finally get principals, thanks to the Supreme Court’s intervention.

After three years of procedural wrangling between the Delhi government and the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), decks have been cleared for their appointment.

The UPSC, which conducts the selection, told the court that it would complete the process for filling the 58 posts of principals under the Direct Recruitment Quota and 145 posts under the Recruitment by Promotion Quota by the year-end.

More than 7,000 Kashmiris take exams to join police

Srinagar, March 06: More than 7,000 Kashmiri youth across the Valley Saturday took examinations to join the police force.

‘More than 7,000 candidates who had passed the physical tests for selection to the posts of sub-inspector of police sat for the written exams in the Valley,’ Owais Ahmad, inspector general of police, told.

‘Similarly, 6,000 candidates sat for the same exam in the Jammu region,’ he added.

Thronging the various examination centres in the state’s summer capital Srinagar, the candidates were very enthusiastic to join the local police department.
