IIT-JEE had ‘wrong instructions’ in Hindi version

New Delhi, April 15: An IIT professor has alleged the just-held IIT-Joint Entrance Exam had carried “wrong instructions” in certain questions involving 48 marks in the Hindi version of the paper.

The Hindi version of the paper-II of the test carried wrong instructions which could have misled students in the Hindi heartland, Professor Rajiv Kumar, IIT Kharagpur, said tonight.

Educating children true tribute to Ambedkar: Hooda

Chandigarh, April 14: Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda today announced to set up a memorial for B R Ambedkar at Kurukshetra.

During the state-level celebrations of Ambedkar Jayanti at Kurukshetra, he said educating children would be the true tribute to the Dalit icon as it could help realise his dreams of equality and prosperity.

Hooda also announced to set up ‘Ambedkar Bhawan’ at Kurukshetra as per the aspirations of the people and said the biggest contribution of Ambedkar was a sense of self-respect among the people of underprivileged sections he helped develop.

Jamia confers DLitt degree on Saudi prince

New Delhi, April 14: Prince Salman Bin Abdul Aziz of Saudi Arabia was today conferred an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters by Jamia Millia Islamia, a leading central university of India.

“Jamia Millia Islamia honours His Royal Highness Prince Salman Bin Abdul Aziz, a world renowned philanthropist, internationally acclaimed statesman and above all a man of high moral fabric and integrity, with the degree of Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa),” a citation read at the function said.

New Delhi, April 14: Professional education remains a less preferred area for girl students as 85 per cent of them enrol in conventional streams of Arts, Science and Commerce, a government report has said.

The enrolment of girl students in education has increased from less than 10 per cent at the time of independence to 41.4 per cent in 2009-10, the annual report of the HRD Ministry said.

University students lathicharged in Jaipur

Jaipur, April 13: University students demanding release of pending scholarship money were today lathicharged by police when they were tried to enter the premises of the Rajasthan government’s social justice department during a demonstration here.

Over a dozen students have been arrested, Superintendent of Police (Jaipur South) Jose Mohan said.

“They tried to enter the building and damage property following which police restored to cane charge. However, the situation was brought under control soon,” police sources said.

Bihar needs 27,000 cr to implement Right to Education Act: Nitish

Patna, April 13: Bihar requires Rs 27,000 crore, much beyond the state’s internal resources, to implement the Right to Education Act in the first year itself, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said on Monday.

“The state will require Rs 27,000 crore to implement the Act in Bihar, which is far beyond its capacity,” he told a press conference in Patna.

“Look at the figure, the budgetary outlay for Bihar for 2010-11 is Rs 53,000 crore… Can it be possible to spare Rs 27,000 crore from it,” he said.

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Chair set up at Columbia varsity

Washington, April 13: Columbia University has instituted a Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Chair at its law school and two Professor Jagdish Bhagwati scholarships with support from the Indian government.

The chair, at the Columbia University Law School in honour of Ambedkar, one of the university’s alumni, has been instituted to mark the 120th birth anniversary of the chief architect of the Indian Constitution on April 14.

Mathematics makes students sweat in IIT-JEE

New Delhi, April 12: Lengthy and tricky questions on mathematics gave a tough time to nearly 4.72 lakh students today in the IIT-Joint Entrance Exam for admission into about 10,000 seats in the prestigious institutes.

The exam papers also carried a printing error as subject-heads of mathematics and physics were interchanged. The candidates were immediately told about it and were assured that the error would not affect the evaluation.

4.7 lakh students sit for IIT entrance

New Delhi, April 11: Nearly 4.7 lakh students on Sunday appeared in the IIT-Joint Entrance Examination for admission to prestigious 15 IITs, ISM Dhanbad and IT-BHU.

The number of candidates has gone up to 4.72 lakh this year against four lakh candidates last year, Prof T S Natarajan, Organising Chairman, JEE 2010, said.

The students qualifying the test will be eligible for admission into B.Tech programmes in these institutes offering over 10,000 seats.

About 90,000 candidates from National Capital Region have registered for the test. The results will be announced on May 26.

Government’s adult education going online via TCS

New Delhi, April 11: India’s adult education programme will not just be a chalk and black board scheme as the government has roped in software services and consulting company Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to teach illiterates through the click and portal medium too.

“We have already had discussions with TCS on this and they are almost ready with a software that will teach adults (above 15 years of age) through animation, graphics and by downloading teaching materials from a dedicated site,” a senior human resource development ministry (HRD) official told IANS.

472,000 students appear for IIT joint entrance exam

New Delhi, April 11: At least 472,000 students appeared for the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) joint entrance examination (JEE), seeking a berth in over 15 top engineering colleges across the country.

“As many as 4.72 lakh students are giving the JEE as against 3.98 lakh students last year,” T.S. Natarajan, Organising Chairman of the JEE 2010 told IANS from Chennai.

The JEE-2010 is under the supervision of IIT-Madras.

The students are vying for around 10,000 seats at the B-Tech level at 15 IITs, Indian School of Mines (Dhanbad) and IT-BHU (Banaras Hindu University).

Students clash over meet by pro-Naxal group in JNU

New Delhi, April 10: Groups of students clashed in JNU campus here over a meeting organised by an alleged pro-Naxal camp to oppose government’s operation against Maoists.

JNU Forum Against War On People, a group of like-minded students who are allegedly against Centre’s policies towards Naxals, had organised the meeting here last evening. The organisers said the meet was intended to oppose the “Operation Green Hunt” by the government.

New Delhi, April 10: Here is good news for the students belonging to Muslim communities and who aspire to become journalist. The International Media Institute of India (IMII), in its noble initiative to support the interests of these groups, is offering full scholarship assistance for limited number of students. IMII, located in Noida near Delhi, offers an 11-month post-graduate diploma in multimedia journalism. The classes will start on 5th July 2010.

Indian student wins prestigious scholarship

London, April 10: An Indian human rights student has won the prestigious Gates scholarship and will take up her place at the Cambridge University in the autumn.

Aditi Malik from New Delhi is among 80 graduate students from 26 countries who have been selected for the Gates Cambridge Scholarships from more than 7,000 applicants. The scholarship programme celebrates its 10th anniversary this year.

Rs.282 crore aid for Indian Maritime University

New Delhi, April 08: The union Cabinet Thursday approved the proposal to provide financial support of Rs.282.25 crore to Indian Maritime University (IMU), Chennai, to meet capital expenditure as well as recurring deficit.

The IMU has been established as a central university with all-India jurisdiction, to help generate employment opportunities in the maritime sector.

Pranab for more private initiatives in higher education

Pune, April 08: Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee here on Wednesday said the government did not have adequate resources to expand higher education on its own, making it necessary for private players to take on a bigger role in future.

Mr. Mukherjee was speaking at the 11th convocation ceremony of the Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University here, which also conferred on him a D.Litt. (Honoris Causa) degree.

Education gets an impetus in Noida

Noida, April 08: Here’s some good news for parents who cannot afford the exorbitant fees of private schools. The Noida and Greater Noida authorities have set up four English medium senior secondary schools in the twin cities, with infrastructure comparable to renowned public schools.

The schools will be affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the tuition fee is Rs 290 per month. Admissions for Classes I to VII started on Wednesday.

CM awards doctors

New Delhi, April 08: Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit gave away awards to 20 of Delhi’s serving doctors in the Capital on Wednesday.

State health minister Kiran Walia and Principal health secretary JP Singh were among those present on the occasion.

“Keeping the risky service atmosphere of doctors in mind, the Government has decided to give them due recognition through State awards,” said Dikshit.

Indian student wins top US research honour

Washington, April 08: Prasun Chatterjee, an Indian environmental engineering student whose research has contributed to a new way of detecting toxic lead and copper in water, has won one of the highest US research honours.

Chatterjee, a research student at the University of Lehigh, Pennsylvania, will receive the 2010 C. Ellen Gonter Environmental Chemistry Award from the American Chemical Society’s (ACS) Environmental Chemistry Division when ACS holds its fall national meeting in Boston in August.
