Hyderabad as centre for MBBS exam

Lucknow, April 30: The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has decided to restore Hyderabad as one of its test centres for conducting the 2010-11 MBBS entrance examination to be held May 8, officials said.

The varsity had earlier cancelled Hyderabad as a test centre following unrest and disturbances there over the Telangana issue.

‘After reviewing the present scenario in Hyderabad, the varsity has decided to revive the test centre there,’ AMU official spokesperson Rahat Abrar said Friday in Aligarh, some 300 km from Lucknow.

Private engineering colleges in state want dual entrance test

Mumbai , April 30: Students may have to give two common entrance tests (CET) next year if private engineering colleges have their way. Members of the Maharashtra Association of Engineering Colleges (MAEC) have proposed conducting a separate entrance test apart from the MH-CET conducted by the state government.

GNDU to start Masters of Exercise Physiology course

Amritsar, April 29: The Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) here would start, a two-year Master in Exercise Physiology and Nutrition course from this academic session.

This course would be started under the Faculty of Sports Medicine and Physiotherapy.

Jaspal Singh, Head of the Department, today said the course has been designed and drafted in consultation with Prof Sheri Melton, Fulbright Nehru Scholar, West Chester University, State of Pennsylvania, USA.

Jamia Millia ready to embrace semester system

New Delhi, April 29: Come July, all postgraduate courses of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) will switch over to the semester system. Unlike Delhi University (DU), which is struggling to introduce the same at the undergraduate level, the new format at JMI is being ushered in without any apparent opposition from the faculty or students.

Delhi University staff to be questioned in radiation case

New Delhi, April 29: Delhi University’s department of chemistry staff will be questioned Thursday after the source of the radioactive material, which claimed one life and affected seven in a west Delhi scrap market, was traced to the department’s laboratory, police said.

Late Wednesday, police revealed that the radioactive gamma cell containing Cobalt 60 was auctioned by the Delhi University department two months ago.

Chennai, april 28: In the final week of April, the seat matrix for MBBS seats throughout Tamil Nadu still remains fluid and is constantly evolving and therefore, it is impossible to commit a number that would hold good for the admissions this year.

MCD teachers demand Sixth Pay Commission arrears

New Delhi, April 27: Teachers of municipal schools in the capital held a demonstration at the MCD headquarters here today, protesting the non-payment of 60 per cent arrears under the Sixth Pay Commission.

The teachers, under the banner of Nagar Nigam Sikshak Sangh, a representative body of 25,000 MCD teachers, said the civic body is yet to pay the second instalment of the arrears, after 40 per cent was given three years back.

Delhi govt to identify unrecognised schools

New Delhi, April 27: With the Right to Education Act stipulating that no school can operate without recognition, Delhi Government has started a process of identifying such unrecognised educational institutions functioning in the city.

The education department of the city government has already directed civic agencies MCD and NDMC to identify such schools in their areas within next seven days.

“Notices will be issued to such schools to apply for recognition and if they fail to get the recognition within a stipulated time-frame then they will be shut down,” said an official.

Sex workers open school for their children, slum dwellers

Kolkata, April 26: Sex workers in West Bengal have pooled their resources to set up a primary school for their children as well as those of slum dwellers.

Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee, an organisation working for the uplift of sex workers and their families in West Bengal, has built the school at Titagarh in North 24-Parganas district, 30 km away from Kolkata.

Jamia Millia starts new distant learning course

New Delhi, April 26: After suspending the bachelor of arts (BA) regular course this year, the Jamia Millia Islamia Monday announced the launch of a similar programme through the distant-learning mode.

“The Centre for Distance and Open Learning, announces the launch of BA (General) course from the session starting 2010-11,” the university said.

Mumbai, April 25: Event management company IMG, which is conducting Indian Premier League for the BCCI, today said they have co-operated with the Indian tax authorities, probing the funding of the T20 tournament, and will continue to do so.

The IMG statement came in the wake of controversy surrounding the tournament, a spokesman of the company said.

Different marking pattern in AIEEE

New Delhi, April 25: The All India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE) today offered different marking patterns, creating some confusion among students as nearly 12 lakh candidates took the test for admission into NITs and IIITs.

The paper, to be completed in three hours, carried 90 questions for 432 marks. These questions comprised 30 each in mathematics, physics and chemistry. Each subject had 24 questions of four marks each and six questions of eight marks each.

Anti-JNU Vice Chancellor slogans on stray dogs

New Delhi, April 24: Protesters in Jawaharlal Nehru University are now using stray dogs to spread their campaign to oppose a move for re-appointment of Vice Chancellor B B Bhatacharya for a second term.

Much to the surprise and dismay of onlookers, dogs with slogan ‘VC BBB GO’ written on them are moving in the campus.

The students’ organisations expressed their ignorance about the issue. However, the ABVP claimed that it could have been done by radical forces in the campus, represented by AISA and DSU.

First year Intermediate results today

Hyderabad, April 24: Results of first year Intermediate examinations will be released on Saturday at 11.30 a.m. at the Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) office.

Cabinet approves 1,000 additional model schools

New Delhi, April 23: An additional 1,000 model schools will be set up in the Educationally Backward Blocks (EBB) in the country which will serve as a benchmark of excellence. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) today approved the setting up of 1,000 additional model schools in the government sector.

Huge vacancy of faculty in IITs, IIMs

New Delhi, April 22: IITs and IIMs are facing huge vacancy of faculty despite having attractive pay structure, good accommodation and other perks, Lok Sabha was told.

IIT Kharagpur is facing maximum vacancy of 299 faculty, followed by 222 in IIT Bombay, 194 in IIT Roorkee, 138 in IIT Madras, 78 in IIT Delhi, 69 in IIT Kanpur and 65 in IIT Guwahati, Minister of State for HRD, D Purandeswari, said in a written reply on Wednesday.

In fact, the number of vacancy increased from 877 in the seven old IITs in 2008-09 to 1,065 in 2009-10, she said.

Tough conditions for deemed universities in the offing

New Delhi, April 20: To check mushrooming of deemed universities, a government panel has recommended tough conditions for institutes, including a mandatory 15-year standing and highest rating from an accreditation agency, for being considered for such status.

The task force, set up by HRD Ministry to study a draft regulation prepared by UGC for deemed universities, has recommend that institutions should have minimum 15 years of standing to be considered for deemed university status.

Mobiles ban in Chhattisgarh schools

Raipur, April 20: The Chhattisgarh government has banned teachers and students from using mobile phones in government and private schools, official sources said Tuesday.

‘The government has issued an order to ban the use of mobile phones by teachers and students in schools,’ sources in the school education department told IANS. The education department has asked officials in all the 18 districts to ensure the strict implementation of the order.

Allow students to take exams, deemed varsity told

Chennai, April 20: The Madras High Court on Monday directed the Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences (SIMTS) (deemed university), Velappanchavadi, and the Saveetha School of Engineering, Thandalam, to allow students of the fourth year to attend classes from April 21 to May 6 and practical examinations from May 19 for those who secure minimum attendance.

They would include those who were suspended and unable to take examinations for want of attendance.

They should hold the theory examination for the students from May 27.

Common test for all engineering colleges likely

New Delhi, April 19: A committee of directors of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) is working on a proposal to have a single entrance test for all engineering aspirants in India. If accepted, it would mean an end to the IITs’ Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) and all other individual entrance tests, such as the All India Engineering Entrance Examination conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education.

Rs 40,000 cr given as education loans: PC

Chennai, April 19: Emphasising that no other regime in independent India had disbursed so much educational loans largely benefiting the Dalit and the backward people, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Sunday expressed the hope that the volume of monetary assistance to support learning was likely to be at least Rs 40,000 crore till the last fiscal (2009-10).

At a seminar on ‘Development of Dalits,’ besides a mass marriage function organised by Tirukkulam Sinthanaiyalargal Maiyam here, Chidambaram said educational loans totalled Rs 25,000 crore as on March 31, 2009.

E-readers motivate less-enthusiastic kids

Washington, April 18: Electronic readers like Kindle motivate children to read by making them interact with texts in ways they don’t interact with the printed word, an expert says.

Lotta Larson, Kansas-State University (KSU) assistant professor of elementary education, has been using the Amazon Kindle in her work with a pair of second-graders since 2009.

The e-reader has features that make the text audible, increase or decrease font size and let readers make notes about the book.

“It’s interesting to see the kinds of things these kids have been able to do,” Larson said.

AMU Alumni giving a healing touch at Kumbh

Haridwar, April 16: As a sea of mostly Hindu pilgrims descended here for the Kumbh Mela, Azim Mir Khan was among the many doctors who attended to their aches, pains and ailments as part of a medical camp set by Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) alumni.

The camp organised by the Sir Syed Forum, as the group is called, at the Sati Kund temple in Kankhal near here coincided with Baisakhi and Mesh Sakranti – two of the most auspicious days for taking a bath in the Ganga during the Kumbh Mela.

Your degrees, marks will soon be on smart cards

Mumbai, April 16: Conning employers and getting jobs by producing fake degrees is about to get a lot tougher. Universities in the state will soon give students smart cards.

These cards will have a student’s marksheets and degrees stored on them. They will also post information on a student’s degree online.

Prospective employers, by paying a small fee, can verify these online. The state has come up with this system to beat the rising cases of bogus certificates.
