15 of 25 civil service exam toppers from Delhi

New Delhi, May 06: As many as 15 of the 25 toppers in the civil service exam 2009 appeared from the national capital, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) said Thursday.

Of the top 25 in the merit list, 15 appeared from Delhi, two each from Chennai, Mumbai and Thiruvananthapuram each, and one each from Allahabad, Chandigarh, Cuttack and Hyderabad, the UPSC said.

“Among first 25, six have made to the merit list in their first attempt, four in second attempt, 11 in third attempt, three in fourth attempt and one in seventh attempt,” said the UPSC.

Kashmir boy tops civil services exam

New Delhi, May 06: Shah Faesal, a doctor from Srinagar, has topped the civil services examination 2009, it was announced Thursday.

A total of 875 candidates – 680 male and 195 female – have been recommended for appointment to the prestigious Indian Administrative Service, Indian Foreign Service, Indian Police Service and other central services, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) said.

Faesal, who has done his MBBS from Srinagar, cleared the examination in his first attempt.

Jamia Millia Islamia gearing up for Commonwealth Games

New Delhi, May 06: Jamia Millia Islamia is gearing up to play an important role during the Commonwealth Games to be held in October 2010.

Jamia is going to be a venue for practice sessions of Rugby 7’s and Table Tennis and has consequently upgraded its games and sports facilities for the Oct 3-14 Games.

President’s nod for AMU centres in Kerala, Bengal

Aligarh, May 06: President Pratibha Patil has approved the setting up of two outstation centres of Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), one each in West Bengal and Kerala, an official said here Thursday.

AMU vice chancellor P.K. Abdul Azis said the approval from the president was received Wednesday.

Patil gave the approval in the capacity of visitor of the university. The approval was granted for establishing centres at Murshidabad in West Bengal and Malappuram in Kerala under section 12 (2) of the university act.

Union Home Minister invites JNU girl over for tea

New Delhi, May 06: In the spirit of dialogue, Home Minister P Chidambaram has invited a Maoist-sympathiser and student of JNU to have a cup of tea with him in his office and to debate what she called the government’s ‘anti-people policies’.

Chidambaram who visited JNU campus last night to address a seminar on ‘Naxalism: A Threat to Indian Democracy and Internal Security’ organised by NSUI, the student wing of Congress Party, extended the invitation after being bombarded with questions by the girl who is pursuing her doctorate in Economics from the University.

B.Ed exam cancelled in UP due to paper leak

Lucknow, May 05: Test papers of the combined entrance examination for admission in B.Ed course in Uttar Pradesh were leaked in Farukkhabad district, leading to the cancellation of the exam scheduled for Wednesday, even as four persons have been arrested in this connection.

“Four persons have been arrested in Farukkhabad district last evening in this connection and computerised and handwritten copies of the B.Ed exam were recovered after which it was decided to cancel the test,” Additional Director General of Police Brij Lal told reporters.

Indian origin appointed as Dean of Harvard Business School

New Delhi, May 05: Indian-American Nitin Nohria has been appointed as the 10th Dean of Harvard Business School. He is the first person of Indian origin to occupy this prestigious and high-profile post.

Nitin Nohria is currently working as the Richard P Chapman Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School (HBS). He will take over as the Dean on July 1, 2010.

Nohria received his B.Tech degree in Chemical Engineering from the IIT Mumbai in 1984. He then received his Ph.D. in Management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Sloan School of Management in 1988.

B.Ed exam cancelled in UP due to paper leak

Lucknow, May 05: Lucknow University cancelled the B.Ed entrance exam slated for Wednesday morning following leakage of the question paper.

The announcement made by the varsity came as a shock for lakhs of candidates, who were told about the cancellation at their respective test centres hours before it was to start.

Around seven lakh students were to appear for the B.Ed exam for around one lakh seats in different universities and colleges of the state, officials said.

“The fresh date of the examination would be announced soon,” university registrar G.P. Tripathi said.

Foreign education institutions Bill tabled in Lok Sabha

New Delhi, May 04: Amid opposition by the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the government on Monday introduced the Foreign Educational Institutions (Regulation of Entry and Operations) Bill in the Lok Sabha.

The Bill, which seeks to regulate the entry and operation of foreign education institutions, had been pending for the past four years due to stiff opposition from the Left. It was also sent to the Committee of Secretaries last year and eventually cleared by the Cabinet in March.

IGNOU extends last date for submitting admission forms

New Delhi, May 02: The last date for submitting applications for admissions to programmes in the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU)’s July 2010 session has been extended till May 31.

The applications will be accepted with late fee of Rs.200 till June 15, an IGNOU media release said Sunday.

Earlier, the last date for submission of applications for admissions to IGNOU was April 30, and with late fee it was May 31, the release said.

VC leaves campus, to work from Delhi

Itanagar, May 02: The vice chancellor of the Rajiv Gandhi Central University today left the campus and decided to function from New Delhi in the face of demands by agitating students for his ouster.

In a press release issued tonight, K C Belliappa said though he was innocent, he was leaving to maintain peace on the campus.

He said he had asked the human resources development ministry to set up a fact finding committee to probe the allegations made against him by the students as well as recent incidents on the campus.

4 education Bills to be tabled in parliament

Bangalore, May 02: Union Minister for Human Resources Development, Kapil Sibal, said four bills related to education would be tabled in the parliament on Monday.

He was speaking after opening the new campus of National Assessment and Accreditation Council on Saturday.

The four bills are: Foreign Education Providers Bill; Prohibition of Unfair Practices in Technical, Medical Educational Institutions and Universities Bill; Educational Tribunals Bill; National Accreditation Regulatory Authority for Higher Educational Institutions Bill.

After RTE, no quota for MPs in Kendriya Vidyalayas

New Delhi, April 30: Government has abolished MPs’ quota in admission to the Kendriya Vidyalayas after enactment of the Right to Education Act that reserves 25 per cent seats in the school for local students.

Replying to supplementaries during Question Hour, Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal said the MPs could earlier nominate two students from certain sections of society to KVs.

Under the Right to Education Act, 25 per cent seats in Kendriya Vidyalaya have been reserved for civil category for people in 3-km radius of the school, he said.

AMU restores Hyderabad as centre for MBBS exam

Lucknow, April 30: The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has decided to restore Hyderabad as one of its test centres for conducting the 2010-11 MBBS entrance examination to be held May 8, officials said.

The varsity had earlier cancelled Hyderabad as a test centre following unrest and disturbances there over the Telangana issue.

“After reviewing the present scenario in Hyderabad, the varsity has decided to revive the test centre there,” AMU official spokesperson Rahat Abrar said Friday in Aligarh, some 300 km from Lucknow.
