New plan to educate poor

New Delhi, May 17: In a major push for inclusive education, the government has decided to allow corporates, non-profit companies and societies to open 2,500 schools across the country. The Public Private Partnership (PPP) model finalised by the Planning Commission in consultation with the private sector this week allows the government to fill 1,000 of the 2,500 seats in each school with children from the deprived sections.

The schools envisaged will remain government schools, but run by private management. The scheme will benefit as many as 25 lakh poor children.

Now, more seats for girls in Himachal varsity

Shimla, May 16: The Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) has decided to create an extra seat and reserve it for single girl child in M.Phil courses, an official said here Sunday.

Earlier, the university created an extra seat in graduate and postgraduate professional courses and reserved it for girls who were the only child of their parents.

“Now we have decided to reserve one supernumerary seat for single girl child in all M.Phil courses also from this academic year on the pattern of postgraduate and undergraduate courses,” HPU Vice-Chancellor Sunil Kumar Gupta told IANS.

Medical college form submission: Last date extended to May 31

Chennai. May 15: The State government has extended the last date for submitting application forms for medical colleges till May 31. “Earlier, the last date for submitting the forms was May 27, but since many schools are expected to receive their mark sheets only by May 27, it has been decided to extend the last date by four days,” Health Secretary V.K. Subburaj said here on Saturday.

School admission laws to be tweaked to be tougher

Jaipur, May 14: In a shocking display of brutality, over hundred female teachers sitting in protest inside the residence of Rajasthan Minister of Education Bhanwarlal Meghwal were beaten by the police here on Friday.

The police brutally attacked teachers of the Nursery Teachers Training (NTT) course, who had assembled at Meghwal”s residence demanding recognition of the NTT certificate course that would enable them to apply for jobs with the government.

Poor students may get education loan at 4% interest

New Delhi, May 14: Government is planning to provide education loans at four percent interest rate to help students from weaker sections of society to pursue higher studies.

Discussions are on between the HRD Ministry and the Planning Commission on this innovative concept, which is seen as a significant initiative of the UPA government.

“It (education loan at four per cent proposal) is at a preliminary stage. We have discussed this idea with the Planning Commission and it is supportive,” HRD Minister Kapil Sibal told a news agency.

Marginal rise in Plus Two pass percentage

Chennai, May 14: Students in Tamil Nadu who took the Class XII Higher Secondary Examination this March have recoded a pass percentage of 85.2, according to the results declared by the Directorate of Government Examinations here on Friday. This is a 2.2 percentage point-increase from last year’s 83 per cent.

Keeping up with the tradition, girls have outdone boys. The pass percentage among girls is 88 per cent, while that among boys is 81.9 per cent. Girls of this batch have also recorded a 2.5 percentage point-increase from the 85.5 per cent that they had obtained last year.

WBUT exam 2010 postponed

West Bengal, May 10: West Bengal University of Technology (WBUT) has postponed the examinations of even semesters 2010-11.

According to the Controller of the examination, Debyajyoti Konar, said that West Bengal State Election Commission has asked West Bengal University of Technical (WBUT) to postpone the even semester 2010.

The new dates and schedule will be declared shortly.

The new schedule will be published soon on the website http://www.wbut.net.

Assam youth beats poverty to crack civil services exam

Morigaon, May 08: Young Narayan Konwar from Assam who cracked the civil services examination this time had failed once in his Class 12 board exams and secured a second division in Class 10.

‘Failure is the pillar of success,’ Konwar told IANS outside his mud-and-thatch hut in village Shyamkota in Morigaon district, about 80 km from Assam’s main city Guwahati.

The road leading to the village is potholed. There is no electricity still in the entire Shyamkota area.

MGNREGA muster roll to be digitised in Rajasthan

Jaipur, May 07: The Rajasthan government today announced that muster roll of Mahatama Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) engaging lakhs of labourers would be digitised on computer in a unified manner.

Holding a meeting on implementation of MGNREGA scheme here, chief minister Ashok Gehlot said the trial work on digitisation was under way at Jodhpur and Churu and it would be expanded in other districts soon.

Rajiv Gandhi Seva Kendra would be linked with the muster roll computerisation work at panchayat samiti and gram panchayat levels, Gehlot said.

AMU teachers demand removal of CCTV cameras from campus

Aligarh, May 07: A teachers’ body at the Aligarh Muslim University has demanded immediate removal of CCTV cameras installed at the campus, calling the measure as an “unacceptable encroachment” into privacy of people at the premier institute.

At a special meeting of the AMU Teachers’ Association (AMUTA) yesterday, a resolution demanded immediate removal of security cameras installed at many places in the campus.

Job Stress May Increase Heart Disease Risk In Women

Washington, May 07: A new research has discovered that females are twice as likely to suffer from heart troubles caused by stress at work places than their male counterparts.

The discovery suggested that the long-familiar harmful effects of job tension on males cause more harm to women’s heart.

During the research, among female nurses in Denmark, scientists observed for 15 years the impact of having a hard job on the hearts of 12,000 females aged 45 to 64.

Minister of State in the PMO Prithiviraj Chavan asserted that all the 19 nuclear plants generating electricity in the country were completely safe and mechanisms would be strengthened in the field of atomic research and medical use as “some lessons have been learnt” from the accident in which one person died.

Cambridge students can sit for CLAT

Mumbai, May 07: Now, a Class 12 Cambridge student can appear for Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), for admission to any of the 11 national law schools in India.

On Thursday, the National Law Institute University in Bhopal confirmed that students affiliated to University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) are eligible to sit for CLAT. The test will be conducted on May 9.

30 disabled candidates clear UPSC exam

New Delhi, May 06: Of the 875 candidates who cleared the civil services exam, 30 are physically challenged, it was announced Thursday.

Among the 30, 14 are orthopaedically challenged, five visually impaired and 11 are hearing impaired, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) said.

A total of 680 male and 195 female candidates have been recommended for appointment to the prestigious Indian Administrative Service, Indian Foreign Service, Indian Police Service and other central services.
