CBSE results: Dikshit praises government schools’ efforts

New Delhi, May 22: Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit and Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely Friday commended the marked improvement and overall performance of the government schools in the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) exams, terming it a joint effort of the board, hard working teachers and sincere students.

State to change face of education

Mumbai, May 22: In an attempt to reform the state of higher education in Maharashtra, the education department is setting up a slew of committees next week. Several experts in the field of higher education such as former vice chancellors have been shortlisted to be part of the committees. Three committees – one to amend the Maharashtra Universities Act, 1994, one to look into bifurcation and a state knowledge commission – will be formed.

Sibal allays fears of faculty exodus from IITs

New Delhi, May 21: HRD Minister Kapil Sibal today sought to dispel fears about IIT faculties joining foreign institutes after they set shop here, saying the teachers are “patriotic” enough not to sell their conscience for a little bit of money.

“Had it been the case, IIT teachers would have been picked up by the elite Stanford and Harvard university even today. But none have gone,” Sibal said at an international education seminar here.

The attrition rate in IITs is “zero”, he said.

Job applications from Maoist strongholds flood paramilitary

New Delhi, May 21: It seems the Maoists’ claim that they enjoy overwhelming tribal support does not hold water. A majority of the 1,31,433 job applications received by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in the past three months are from villages where Maoists hold sway or have made deep-rooted affiliations with locals living close to jungles.

Drop in pass percentage in CBSE Class 12 exams

New Delhi, May 21: The overall pass percentage of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Class 12 board exams saw a drop of 1.13 percent. The board results were declared Friday in Delhi, Guwahati and Allahabad.

The overall pass percentage was 79.87 percent compared to 81 percent last year, a CBSE spokesperson said.

The pass percentage for girls was 85.28 percent, compared to 75.90 percent for boys.

Can short-staffed Delhi University tackle semester system?

New Delhi, May 21: Delhi University (DU) may be planning to switcBuzz Up Shareh to the semester system – usually involving a higher teacher-student ratio – but it is already reeling under a staff crunch, with around 51 percent of teaching posts lying vacant.

DU has 1,500 sanctioned posts of teachers. A human resource development ministry report says 763 are lying vacant posts, but adds that 729 of these have been advertised and interviews are in the process of being scheduled.

The teacher shortage has affected students badly and also overburdened existing teachers.

NTU Kakinda postpones B.Tech / B.Pharm Exam

Kakinda, May 20: JNTU Kakinda has postponed the 1st year B.Tech / B.Pharm Examination, scheduled to be held on May 21, 2010 (Friday).

The fresh date of examination will be intimated later, according to the official website of Jawaharlal Nehru Technical University, Kakinada.

Sibal praises technical education council

New Delhi, May 20: Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal Thursday praised the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for introducing transparency in its practices.

“AICTE has been in the news for all the wrong reasons. I was getting complaints against AICTE earlier, but during the past two months we have received no complaints,” Sibal said at a function here.

“The AICTE has brought transformation from inspector raj to a regime of self-disclosure,” he said.

Convict pursues MBA course, varsity waives fees

Kurukshetra, May 20: In the light of Punjab and Haryana High Court verdict, the Kurukshetra University today allowed a disabled convict, lodged in Karnal jail, to pursue his MBA course.

The university has not only allowed Surinder Kumar to pursue his MBA but has also waived of the entire fee for the course, Lt. Gen. D D S Sandhu, Vice-Chancellor, told reporters here.

“This will go a long way in rehabilitation of the jail inmate after his sentence is over,” he said.

“The move will also transform him and enable him to join the mainstream with self-respect.”

Girls back on top

New Delhi, May 20: After having lost to boys last year, girls reclaimed the title of top performers once again as the CISCE declared its secondary (ICSE) and senior secondary (ISC) board results on Wednesday. The toppers of Class 10 and Class 12, who are both girls, scored 98.8 per cent and 98.75 per cent respectively.

With e-learning portal, Delhi University gets tech savvy

New Delhi, May 20: Keeping pace with GenY, Delhi University (DU) in its new tech-savvy avatar will launch a portal Friday where e-learning material in 12 courses will be uploaded, supplementing classroom learning and making the process more fun.

Thanks to the portal by DU’s Institute of Lifelong Learning (ILLL), with just the click of a mouse, a student will be able to take pre-recorded lectures, go through experiments in virtual labs and listen to a recorded voice read out poems and texts.

Eligibility marks for engineering admission reduced

Chennai, May 20: The State government on Wednesday announced the lowering of eligibility marks for admission of students to engineering courses.

In respect of Open Category, the new cut-off mark would be 50 per cent against the previous 55 per cent; for Backward Classes, 45 per cent (50 per cent); Most BC – 40 per cent (45 per cent) and Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes – 35 per cent.

MP to hire retired teachers for rural schools

Bhopal, May 20: Faced with a shortage of teachers in rural areas, the Madhya Pradesh government has decided to avail of the services of retired teachers, officials said Wednesday.

A state cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan decided the subject-wise appointment of retired teachers for teaching work in rural schools from Classes 1 to 12.

This decision has been taken in view of shortage of teachers in rural schools, said an official of the government.

CISCE announces X, XII results; Girls outshine boys

New Delhi, May 19: Yet again girls outshone boys with better pass percentages in the Class-X and Class-XII boards exams this year conducted by Council for Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE).

While the pass rate of students in Class-XII was 97.11 per cent, up by 0.03 per cent from last year, the pass percentage is 98.31 in Class-X which is 0.26 per cent more than last year, the board announced today.

There were 55,760 candidates in Class-XII while 1,12,820 students took the test in Class-X ICSE exam held in March.

CBSE Class 12 results declared

New Delhi, May 19: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Wednesday declared the Class 12 results for Panchkula, Ajmer and Chennai regions.

The board will declare the results of other regions in the next few days.

CBSE class XII results on May 21

New Delhi, May 19: The results of more than 6.99-lakh students, who appeared for class XII CBSE board examinations this year, will be declared on May 21.

The results will be available on the CBSE websites after 8 a.m. on May 21, and the Board has made a special arrangement for quick access of results by individuals as well as schools, the Board said in a statement.

Schools will be able to get entire results by registering their school code and email id on the CBSE websites.

20 lakh teachers needed to implement RTE Act: Sibal

New Delhi, May 19: The government needs to recruit 20 lakh teachers to successfully implement the Right to Education Act, Union Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal said on Monday.

The implementation of the Act was a difficult task and the only solution would be to hire teachers even if they did not have the required qualification.

Agitating DU members meet VC, come out ‘disappointed’

New Delhi, May 18: Members of Delhi University’s Academic Council ended their five-day long agitation over the semester system to attend a meeting with Vice Chancellor Deepak Pental today but came out “disappointed” as the VC refused to budge from his stand.

Pental had invited the agitating teachers for talks yesterday in a bid to end the stand-off.

Members of the Academic Council were on a sit-in since May 13 against what they called a unilateral imposition of semester-based syllabi in 12 undergraduate courses of the science department.

Barred from exams, students seek relief from Sibal

New Delhi, May 18: A group of architecture students who have been barred from writing the exams after falling short in attendance Tuesday met Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal seeking relief from him.

Five of the affected students from the School of Planning and Architecture and one parent met the minister at his house here.

“We are demanding that we must be allowed to appear in the exams,” said Uzair Siddiqui, a second year student who spoke to reporters outside Sibal’s residence but did not meet the minister.

“IIT Bombay is offering minor courses in Physics for all the disciplines of engineering to enrich students with knowledge of physics to be incorporated with their subject,” Prof Raghav Varma, Head, Physics department of IIT said.

New Delhi, May 17: As the UPA-II completes one year next week, HRD Minister Kapil Sibal today the education sector has witnessed the beginning of reforms and will have to pass through a more challenging phase.
