New Delhi, May 28: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Friday declared the results of the Class 10 exam, held under the grading system for the first time.

“The result was declared at 10 a.m.,” a CBSE spokesperson said.

Under the new grading system, the internal assessment marks of the students are added to the board examination scores and students will get grades instead of percentages. The grades will be given on a nine point scale ranging from A1 (excellent) to E2 (dissatisfactory) with D being the minimum pass grade.

Girl students of Sabarkantha Muslim trust school among district toppers

Himmatnagar, May 28: The students of this Muslim trust-run Madresa High School in Himmatnagar may not figure in the state merit list, but they have made their presence felt among the toppers in north Gujarat.

Four girl students of Madresa High School are in the Sabarkantha district merit list this year. Authorities at the 50-year-old school said their emphasis on girls’ education has finally paid off.

NBA preparing guidelines for state biodiversity boards

Chennai, May 27: National Biodiversity Authority is preparing guidelines for its state-level boards for declaring as heritage sites those rich in biodiversity.

“The guidelines for State Biodiversity Boards are under preparation… these are mainly to declare heritage sites which are rich in biodiveristy,” NBA Chairman P L Gautam told reporters here.

Class 10 results will now show grades, students worried

New Delhi, May 27: The results of Class 10 exam conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will be out Friday introducing the new grading system, but students are worried wondering how they will ascertain their exact scores.

“The grading system is good as well as bad. Now because of the new system we won’t know our exact percentage,” said Ankita Mehra, a Class 10 student of Summerville School in Vasundhara Enclave.

Shoeshine boy shines in IIT entrance exam

Kanpur, May 27: He helps his father, a cobbler, mend shoes in his spare time while his mother stitches rags to support the family, but financial hardships have not stopped Abhishek Kumar Bhartiya from coming out with flying colours in the IIT entrance exam.

Abhishek, who secured 154th rank in the SC category of IIT entrance test, now wants to propel his dreams by pursuing aerospace engineering at IIT-Kanpur here.

Girls outperform boys in Uttar Pradesh board exams

Lucknow, May 27: Girls have done better than boys in the Class 12 Uttar Pradesh board exams, the results of which were declared Thursday, an official said.

“The total pass percentage of girls is 89.62, while that of boys is 73.55. The overall pass percentage is 80.54,” director of Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad, Sanjay Mohan told reporters in Allahabad, some 200 km from Lucknow.

According to officials, this year 15,36,949 students registered for the Class 12 Uttar Pradesh board exams, out of which 14,78,040 students appeared for the exams.

FIITJEE to open 60 schools in next two years

New Delhi, May 27: FIITJEE, one of the leading players in the Rs 3,000 crore engineering entrance exams coaching market in India, on Thursday said it plans to open around 60 schools across the country in the next two years.

Matrix Partners, a leading US-based venture capital firm, has invested Rs. 100 crore in the formal education project, FIITJEE state head Debdeep Banerjee told PTI here.

13,104 candidates clear IIT-JEE

New Delhi, May 27: A total of 13,104 candidates today cleared the prestigious IIT-Joint Entrance Examination 2010 with Anumula Jithendar Reddy from Madras zone topping the test.

These students will be eligible for admission in 15 IITs, ISM Dhanbad and IT-BHU. There are 9,509 seats in these institutions. Over 4.5 lakh candidates had appeared in JEE-2010 which was conducted by seven of the IITs on April 11.

Hat trick for Bihar’s Super 30, all students crack IIT

Patna, May 26: All 30 students of Super 30, a free coaching centre in Bihar, have cracked the highly competitive Indian Institute of Technology-Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) for the third consecutive year, the institute announced Wednesday.

“We are really upbeat and celebrating the 100 percent success for the third consecutive year as all 30 students have cracked the IIT-JEE this year,” Anand Kumar, the institute’s director-cum-founder, told IANS.

Bihar’s Super 30 does it again!

Patna, May 26: All 30 students of Super 30, Bihar’s free coaching centre for poor students here, cracked the IIT-JEE this year.

“All the 30 students have cleared the IIT-JEE,” Anand Kumar, the institute’s founder-director said at a press conference on Wednesday.

“It is a matter of great pleasure as we have achieved it again,” he said, adding that since the inception of the coaching centre in 2002, a total of 212 students have cleared the IIT-JEE examination, which is considered as one of the toughest examinations in the world.

CBI books top NHAI officials

New Delhi, May 25: Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered case against the general manager of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and his superior in connection with criminal conspiracy and corruption.

In a statement, CBI identified those booked as NHAI chief general manager S.K. Nirmal, general manager Nitin Jain, and managing director of a Delhi-based construction company Oriental Structural Engineers Private Limited, K.S.Bakshi and its executive S.K. Dixit.

GNDU cancels affiliation of four B.Ed colleges

Amritsar, May 25: The Guru Nanak Dev University in Punjab has cancelled affiliation of four B.Ed colleges for allegedly violating varsity norms.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the University Syndicate here yesterday, a varsity release said today.

It said the four B.ED institutes are Baba Banda Singh Bahadur College of Education, Dhariwal, Aman Bhalla College of Education, Pathankot, Lilly Swords Methodist College, Batala and S S College of Education, Dinanagar.

Students protest teacher shortage, blocks highway in JK

Srinagar, May 25: Students blocked Jammu-Srinagar national highway in Ramban district today in protest against shortage of teachers due to their deployment on census duty, police said.

Around 800 students of several high schools and higher secondary schools converged at Magarkot, about 155 km from here and blocked the highway, they said.

Raising anti-government slogans, the students demanded restoration of teachers in the schools. The demonstration was later lifted following assurance of district authorities that their grievances would be taken up with the government.

Too many vacancies in aviation safety dept

Mumbai, May 25: More than 300 specialist posts, including 178 Group A ones, are lying vacant at the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the industry regulator.

vacancies: two directors, four deputy directors, six assistant directors and 20 air safety officers. The department of operations has 46 vacancies: 3 directors, 11 deputy directors and 32 assistant directors.

The DGCA has only 10 flight operations inspectors for more than 600 aircraft in the country. Even here, four posts are vacant. The regulator recently had to take 14 experts on loan from airliners.

Students can check HSC results online after 11am

Mumbai, May 25: More than 13 lakh students who appeared for their higher secondary certificate (HSC) exam in February will be able to check their results online. The results will be made available on board websites from 11am on Tuesday.

The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education will release the results on several websites across eight divisions in the state where students will get their subject scores.

No mid-day meal for 12 crore children?

New Delhi, May 25: Come July and 12 crore children benefiting from the mid-day meal (MDM) scheme may go without food as states have nearly run out of foodgrain and fresh supply is caught up in wrangling over the mode of payment.

Foodgrain for every quarter is usually lifted a month in advance.

But with June approaching and the department of food and public distribution and HRD ministry still to resolve differences on payment, there is no hope that rice and wheat will be lifted for the scheme for the next quarter.

Chandigarh to spend Rs.48 crore on schools

Chandigarh, May 22: The Chandigarh administration will spend nearly Rs.48 crore this fiscal to upgrade facilities and infrastructure in existing schools and construct new schools in this union territory, an official said here Saturday.

According to an official in the education department, over Rs.10.5 crore will be spent on schools under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and more than Rs.18 crore under the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan in 2010-11.
