Awareness camp on socio-economic empowerment of women

New Delhi, July 23: Minister of State for Women and Child development Krishna Tirath today inaugurated an awareness camp on socio-economic empowerment of women here.

The one-day awareness camp was organised by the ministry in collaboration with the Central Social Welfare Board, Rashtriya Mahila Kosh and Food and Nutrition Board at Dilli Haat, Pitampura.

The camp included several stalls which disseminated information about the programmes of the CSWB, loan schemes of Rashtriya Mahila Kosh and demonstration and display by Food and Nutrition Board on low-cost nutritive recipes.

IIM-Lucknow launches new professional course

New Delhi, July 22: In a joint initiative with Hughes Communications India Limited, the Indian Institute of Management Lucknow (IIM-L) Wednesday launched a new programme to equip professionals with management skills in all economic environments

The programme, titled executive Global Business Management, is a blend of lectures, case studies, assignments and sessions from senior managers in the industry and firms.

Hughes Communications is a networking services company in India.

No leather shoes in Himachal government schools

Shimla, July 22: Leather shoes are to be barred from government schools in Himachal Pradesh because they are not environment friendly.

‘We plan to exclude leather shoes from the uniform in all government schools as these are not environment friendly. Moreover, these are made by slaughtering animals,’ Director (Higher Education) O.P. Sharma told IANS.

He said tennis shoes would take the place of leather shoes.

‘Our department has written to all school principals to get their feedback,’ Sharma said.

23,000 students pass Eamcet but fail in Inter

Hyderabad, July 22: Nearly 23,000 students who qualified in the Eamcet examination, will not be able to join any course as they failed to clear the mandatory Intermediate public examination (IPE). Ironically, 14 students who got zero marks in the Eamcet examination, still qualified based on the IPE marks scored by them.

These IIT students have dance on their mind

Mumbai, July 22: They are not just high academic achievers but skilled dancers too. A group of IIT Mumbai students surprised all by winning UTV Bindass’ Street Dance show last week, proving that a passion could be pursued successfully without compromising on studies.

The next destination for these dancers of today and engineers of tomorrow — choreographer Shiamak Davar’s dance classes.

The 13-member group called Insync consists of third year and fourth year engineering students.

Vocational courses key to inclusive education

New Delhi, July 20: As inclusive education remains high on the government’s agenda, Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Kapil Sibal Tuesday pitched for vocational education as a key to achieving the goal.

“Vocational education is a means of empowerment of children through imparting skills. This will lead to inclusive education,” Sibal said at a function here to launch a new course in hospitality for class 11 and 12 students.

Sibal bats for democracy in classrooms

New Delhi, July 19: Union HRD Minister Kapil Sibal today batted for “democracy” in the classrooms and said students should be allowed to follow their aspirations.

“Democracy has always been associated with politics… we never think of democracy in classrooms,” he said wondering why the concept was so “far removed” from classes.

Sibal made these remarks at the launch of two secondary level courses — Mass Media Studies and Geospatial Technologies (GT) — by CBSE in collaboration with the industries concerned.

Karat lecture at IGNOU cancelled due to permission woes

New Delhi, July 15: A lecture by CPI-M General Secretary Prakash Karat at the IGNOU campus today was abruptly cancelled as security officials of the varsity locked the convention hall after the teacher who was to make the arrangements reportedly did not take the required permission.

A section of the faculty of IGNOU had organised the programme and NCP general secretary D P Tripathi had managed to convince Karat to come to take a lecture on Indian economy.

A first in 30 years, Delhi University to miss opening date

New Delhi, July 15: A 30-year tradition will be broken when Delhi University (DU)does not begin classes July 16. Due to the implementation of semester system, the academic session begins five days later on July 21.

There was nothing specific related to DU opening June 16, but it had become a tradition and students used to look forward to the day.

“The change has come due to the introduction of the semester system from this year,” Gurpreet Singh Tuteja, deputy dean of Student’s Welfare, told IANS.

Jamia extends postgraduate admission date

New Delhi, July 14: The Jamia Millia Islamia University has extended the last date of completing admission formalities to postgraduate courses till July 19, a statement said Wednesday.

The last dates have been extended for postgraduate courses offered by the Faculties of Social Sciences, Humanities and Languages, Natural Sciences, Law and M.Sc. Electronics.

The final list of candidates selected from the waiting list will be announced July 22 and the students will have to complete the admission formalities by July 23.

MAANU students seek action against ex-HoD for deliberately failing them

Hyderabad, July 14: The final year students of Mass Communication and Journalism from the Maulana Azad National Urdu University on Tuesday pleaded before the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) to take action against the Varsity’s former Head of the Department Ehtesham Ahmed Khan.

Talking to INN after filing the petition, one of the students, Mirza Ghani Baig revealed that the former Head of the Department and presently an Associate Professor at the University had told him and eight other students that they would fail in the examinations.

IIT-Mumbai gets youngest Professor

Mumbai, July 13: Patna-born child prodigy Dr Tathagat Avatar Tulsi at 22, joins the faculty of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mumbai, next week.

Tathagat Tulsi has taken up a job as professor at Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay at the age of 22. Tulsi is possibly the youngest Assistant Professor at IIT. He will join the IIT faculty at Powai in Mumbai next week and teach Physics.

Maximum job growth in education sector in June: Monster

New Delhi, July 13: Job opportunities in India continued to expand for the seventh month in June, Monster India said Tuesday.

The education sector saw the strongest demand with a nine percent rise last month over the previous month, it said. Production and manufacturing followed closely with a seven percent rise in opportunities.

“During June, online job availability rose in six of the Index’s 27 industry sectors and in seven of the 14 occupational categories monitored,” Monster Employment Index, a monthly analysis of online job demand in India, showed.

Patna boy is youngest professor at IIT-B

Mumbai, July 13: Patna-born child prodigy Dr Tathagat Tulsi has taken up a job as professor at Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay at the age of 22. Tulsi is possibly the youngest Assistant Professor at IIT. He will join the IIT faculty at Powai in Mumbai next week.

He had finished high school at the age of nine, earned his BSc degree at 10, and MSc degree at 12 and then received his Doctorate in Quantum Computing from the Indian Institute of Science at the age of 21.
He will now teach Physics at IIT Bombay.

Sibal favours PPP in achieving GER target

Chennai, July 11: Expressing concern at the ratio of school passing students joining colleges, Union Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal today favoured Public-Private Partnership to tackle this as the government “lacked financial resources and wherewithal to achieve the tall order.”

While the present Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) is 12.4 per cent, government’s target is around 30 per cent by 2020 and to realise this, the participation of private players and other stake-holders is important, Sibal said while delivering the First Kuruvila Jacob Memorial Oration here.

RTE Act violate by Central Schools

All-India strike delays Orissa university exams

Bhubaneswar, July 03: Exams scheduled for Monday in Orissa universities have been postponed in view of the nationwide shutdown called by political parties to protest the hike in fuel prices, officials said Saturday.

The Biju Patnaik University of Technology and the Utkal University postponed their exams after several political parties called for a strike earlier this week, marking the first unified showdown since the Congress returned to power last year.

Girls outperform boys in Bihar’s madrassa exams

Patna, July 01: Girls have outperformed boys in the examinations held by Bihar’s Madrassa Education Board for the second consecutive year.

“Girls have outperformed boys in the madrassa results. Maulvi, Fauquania and Vastania topped in the Class 12, Class 10 and middle school examinations,” Maulana Ajaj Ahmad, chairman of the Madrassa Education Board of Bihar, said Thursday.

Ban dissection in colleges, urges PETA

New Delhi, June 29: People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Tuesday urged the University Grants Commission (UGC) to ban dissection in zoology classes in universities and colleges.

The animals rights group along with some scientists and academics recommended that colleges should reduce animal dissection in zoology and life-science courses and work towards the implementation of non-animal teaching methods, according to its India campaigner Anuradha Srivastava.

IIM-A in Hyderabad soon

Ahmedabad, June 29: The Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIM-A), the top business school in the country, will set up a campus in Hyderabad soon, a senior official of the Andhra Pradesh government said today.

He said that the idea was originally mooted when Dr Rajasekhara Reddy was the chief minister. The former CM had invited a team to take a look around the state for finding a suitable place to set up the campus.
