New vision needed for Urdu’

New Delhi, January 06: Higher education textbooks across 69 disciplines are being translated in Urdu as well as 21 other Indian languages.

This was disclosed during the 18th meeting of the National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language on Wednesday.

SSC exam fee due dates extended

Hyderabad, January 5: The Director of Government Examinations, Hyderabad has extended the due dates for remittance of Examination fee under Tatkal Scheme for regular, once failed, private candidates without school study, appearing for the first time for the SSC/OSSC/Vocational Public Examinations scheduled to be held in March 2011

In a pressnote here, the Director has asked all the heads of institutions to remit the examination fee in the prescribed Treasury challan only, duly enclosing a list of candidates to it.

Last date for paying SSC exam fees extended

Hyderabad, January 04: The due dates for remittance of exam fees has been extended under the tatkal scheme for regular or once failed or private candidates appearing for the SSC Public examinations to be held in March. All heads of institutions have been instructed to remit the exam fee in the prescribed treasury challan only, duly enclosing the list of candidates.

Academic consultants take the war path

Hyderabad, January 04: Over 700 academic consultants of Osmania University (OU) have come together as the Academic Consultants Association to demand that they be paid they due.

The academic consultants say they shoulder the same burden as any assistant professor employed by OU — who are paid in the region of `40,000-1.5 lakh — but are paid a pittance (`12,000-15,000).

The association represented their case to the university’s vice-chancellor several times but no action has been taken.

‘Varsity staffs retirement age may be raised’

Hyderabad, January 03: The state government is contemplating raising the retirement age of university employees from 60 to 62 years and of the teaching faculty of aided colleges from 58 to 60 years, minister for higher and technical education C Damodar Rajanarasimha has said.

50% must in Class XII for engineering aspirants

New Delhi, January 02: If you are a Class XII (science) student, you will have to score at least 50% marks to be eligible to apply to any engineering or pharmacy college. The All India Council of Technical Education ( AICTE) in its approval process handbook 2011-12 released online has said that minimum qualification for admission to engineering and pharmacy colleges will be 50% marks.

SSC (APOSS) results out

Hyderabad, January 01: Releasing the results of the SSC exams conducted by the Andhra Pradesh Open School Society (APOSS), Minister of Primary Education S Sailajanath said that the results for the open school education have been consistently improving over the last few years.

A total of 4146 students qualified for the SSC (APOSS) exams held in November/ December 2010. The pass percentage for the examination increased from 52.45 % in 2008-2009 to 61.15 % this year.

IT@School ViCTERS (Virtual Classroom Technology on Edusat for Rural Schools) is the only channel in the state to air specific curriculum-based programmes, international programmes on science and technology prepared by Deutsche Welle – the German broadcaster – and BBC, besides classic Indian films.

Haryana schools to remain closed Jan 7-16

Chandigarh, Deceember 31: The education department of Haryana Friday announced that all schools will remain closed from Jan 7 to 15, 2011, in view of the cold conditions prevailing across the state.

Director of Secondary Education Vijayendra Kumar said that the schools would reopen after winter vacations Jan 17.

IGNOU launches courses to improve teaching

New Delhi, December 31: In a bid to improve the quality of teaching in the country, the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) Friday launched two new post-graduate courses for serving and potential teachers.

The two courses are – Post Graduate Diploma in Education Management and Administration (PGDEMA) and Post Graduate Diploma in School Leadership and Management (PGDSLM).

EAMCET to be held on May 8, and ICET on May 15

Hyderabad, December 31: The Minister for Higher Education, Mr Damodar Raja Narasimha, on Thursday announced the dates for conduct of Common Entrance Examinations for professional courses in 2011.

The Minister said that EAMCET examination, which was entrance test for admissions into Engineering, Medicine and Agricultural courses was scheduled to be held on May 8 and within 15 days of the examination, the results would be released.

Technical institutes have to reserve up to 5% seats

New Delhi, December 31: From now, technical institutes approved by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) have to reserve up to 5% of their seats for students from economically backward sections of the society.

“Till now, tution fee waiver scheme operated by AICTE allowed providing up to 10% supernumerary seats that are given to students of economically backward category.

“It was the discretion on the part of the institution to apply for such a scheme. Now these seats are made mandatory for every institute up to five per cent,” HRD minister Kapil Sibal said today.

JNTU to conduct EAMCET again

Hyderabad, December 30: The Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) will once again conduct the Engineering Agriculture and Medicine Common Entrance Test (EAMCET) for 2011.

According to State Council of Higher Education officials, the government has taken the decision to entrust the JNTU with conducting the EAMCET after consulting officials in this connection.

Prof Ramanarao has been appointed Convener for the EAMCET-2011.

With this the JNTU is going to conduct the EAMCET for 13th time.

10-year-old to pursue BSc

Lucknow, December 30: A 10-year-old ‘whizkid’ has been given permission to pursue an under-graduate course in Science from the Lucknow University, an official said.

The admission committee of the varsity has given its consent for Sushma Varma to pursue B Sc course from CMS Degree College, where she was given admission provisionally, the University official said.

Sushma, who could not clear her class 12th board examination this year, passed it in compartment examination.

Five Kerala schools get infotech upgrade

Thiruvananthapuram, December 29: Five government schools in Kerala have been designated as ‘smart schools’ and will receive Rs.1.25 crore each to install multimedia projectors, wireless internet and other infrastructure, an official said Wednesday.

Called the ‘ICT in Schools Scheme’, the project is an initiative of IT@School, the technology arm of the general education department of the Kerala government. It aims at empowering schools with latest information and communications technology (ICT) enabled education, besides implementing e-governance within the education department.

Haryana to introduce computer education in state colleges

Chandigarh, December 29: All government colleges in Haryana will run computer education courses to prepare youth from the state for the information technology (IT) industry, a senior official of the state’s higher education department said Wednesday.

‘Haryana’s Department of Higher Education has planned to introduce computer education in 67 government colleges of the state to provide employment opportunities,’ director general of higher education Dheera Khandelwal said here.

Lucknow, December 29: ‘Wonder Kid’ Sushma Verma, who holds the distinction of being the country’s youngest matriculate at the age of seven, will now pursue her graduation from Lucknow University at the age of 10.University authorities Tuesday approved the application moved by Verma’s parents a few months ago for enrolling their daughter in a science graduation programme.
