Schools reopen in Bihar

Patna, January 17: With the cold relenting, Bihar students were back in school Monday after a prolonged winter break.

The human resource development (HRD) department Sunday decided to open all government and private schools. ‘We ordered to reopen all schools as there is respite from the cold weather,’ HRD principal secretary Anjani Kumar Singh said.

There was some respite from the biting cold in the state as Patna recorded a minimum temperature of 9.4 degrees Celsius.

Delhi schools reopen as cold wave offers respite

New Delhi, January 17: Schools in Delhi reopened Monday after the biting cold of earlier weeks abated somewhat, putting an end to the extended winter vacation.

The schools run by the Delhi government, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and private managements reopened after the government extended their closure till Jan 13 due to the intense cold wave. The schools were scheduled to re-open Jan 3 after the usual winter break for Christmas and New Year.

The minimum temperature recorded in Delhi Monday was 7.5 degrees Celsius, two notches below the average.

Tripura not to follow new education policy yet

Agartala, January 17: The Left Front government in Tripura will not follow the central government’s guidelines for school admissions as the state is yet to pass the necessary laws, officials said Monday.

‘The Tripura government has decided to follow the prevailing norms of lottery system for admission and the children would be admitted according to their or guardians’ preference (of school),’ Principal Secretary for School Education Banamali Sinha told reporters here.

Mandatory test for teachers’ eligibility soon: Sibal

New Delhi, January 17: Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal Monday said that a Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) will soon be made mandatory for teachers as the Right to Education Act is implemented.

Speaking at the meeting of central and state regulatory institutions for School education, the minister said that this test will be as per the norms of the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE).

It’s back to school for children in the plains

New Delhi, January 17: With the sun breaking through and the days getting warmer, it was back to school for children in the national capital and neighbouring states Monday, leaving the authorities and parents now worrying about making up for the lost working days. After an extended winter vacation resulting from the persistant cold wave in the plains, children in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana, as also in Bihar Monday returned to school – with woollen gloves, caps, warm clothes et al.

Nod for filling 107 vacant JNTU colleges faculty posts

Hyderabad, January 17: The state government has granted the go ahead to filling up of the 107 vacant posts of the faculty in the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University colleges in Kakinada and Vizianagaram.

Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Sunday gave the permission for filling up of the 107 vacant posts of Professors, Assistant Professors and Associate Professors of JNTU Colleges at Kakinada and Vizianagaram.

Over one lakh scholarships awarded by ministry of minority affairs

New Delhi, January 15: An official statement from the Ministry of Minority Affairs has revealed that that over 1,16,000 scholarships have been awarded under the merit-cum-means scholarship scheme that had been launched in the year 2007.

The merit-cum-means scholarship scheme is a centrally sponsored scheme and had been implemented by the ministry of minority affairs through state governments and union territory administrations.

Schools violate admission norms, DoE yet to take action

New Delhi, January 15: A Right to Information (RTI) application filed recently by RTI activist Mohit Goel has revealed that even though the Directorate of Education (DoE) had received numerous complaints regarding the violation of admission norms by schools, it has failed to take any action against the violating schools.

More children in school, but quality of education very low – Report

New Delhi, January 15: More girls in the 11-14 age group joined school in rural India in 2010 and more five-year-olds too, but the quality of education, especially in reading and maths, remained low. The percentage of Class 1 children who can recognize numbers 1-9 has decreased, according to a study released here on Friday.

The Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2010 which was released here praised Bihar for its student enrolment. “Bihar’s performance has been commendable”, the report said. The percentage of out-of-school boys and girls in the state has been declining since 2005.

IGNOU to offer several culinary and catering courses

New Delhi, January 15: The Indira Gandhi National Open University is all set to launch a host of degree and diploma programmes in catering, culinary arts, and food production, a varsity official said Saturday.

The courses will be offered by the university’s upcoming Institute of Culinary Arts and aspirants can enrol either in three years degree course in culinary arts, culinary management and catering technology or one year diploma courses in food production and patisserie as well as food processing.

Scholarships: date of submission of forms extended

Hyderabad, January 15: The last date for submitting applications for the scholarship provided by the Andhra Pradesh state government has been extended till January 31.

In a special move Minority Welfare Minister Mr. Mohammad Ahmed Ullah has extended the date for submitting the application for scholarship provided by State Minority Finance Corporation and State Urdu Academy till January 31.

Training in fire & safety engineering

Hyderabad, January 15: The NCTT Centre for Fire & Safety Engineering has invited applications from desirous candidates to undergo training in Fire and Safety Engineering diploma course.

In a press note here, Mr A Venkat Reddy of the Centre stated that those who passed SSC, Intermediate, Degree and Engineering courses are eligible to apply. The candidates belonging to economically backward classes and reserved category will get 50 per cent concession in the tuition fee.

Fund delays worries private engineering colleges

Hyderabad, January 14: The private engineering colleges today expressed serious concern over the delay in release of funds by the state government under fee reimbursement scheme.

The representatives of the Consortium of Private Engineering Colleges Managements Association (CPECMA) today urged chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy to release the funds amounting to about Rs 3,000 crore at the earliest as they are facing serious financial problems.

New norms for technical institutes irk managements

Chandigarh, January 14: The new sets of norms announced by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for setting up institutions have disappointed the managements of technical institutes.

The Punjab Unaided Technical Institution Association (PUTIA) Friday said that the new norms would only make things harder for managements of institutes and for students.

‘The AICTE has substantially increased the processing fees from colleges but on the other hand, the tuition fees have not been increased since last 10 years,’ said J.S. Dhaliwal, president of PUTIA.

‘IGNOU committed to promoting Hindi’

New Delhi, January 14: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is committed to conserving and promoting the Hindi language, Vice Chancellor V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai Thursday said.

‘Keeping in mind the government policies about the conservation of Indian languages, we leave no stone unturned to publish most of our courses in Hindi,’ Pillai said in a release here.

Central Gov. deceided to add more seats in Medical colleges

New Delhi, January 14: The Central government has decided to increase the intake capacity in medical colleges, introduce a Bachelor of Rural Healthcare (BRHC) course and provide financial support to the states to start a minimum of 50 medical schools for the BRHC course in the under-served states in the 12th Five Year plan. This was part of the Hyderabad Resolution drawn up during the two-day health ministers’ meet held in the city.

Govt. urged to fill up vacant teachers posts

Hyderabad, January 13: The Andhra Pradesh Save Education Committee on Thursday urged Primary Education Minister S Shailajanath to effect appointments under DSC-2008 to facilitate strengthening of teaching in government schools.

The Committee leaders, led by its president K Chakradhar Rao and General Secretary G Haragopal among others met the Minister at the Secretariat on Thursday and appealed for checking commercialisation of education and provide suitable facilities in the government schools which were lagging behind the private institutions.

Plea for ban on commercialization of education

Hyderabad, January 13: The A P Save Education Committee on Thursday urged the government to take steps to improve the educational standards and develop facilities in schools in the state.

The delegation of the Committee met the Minister for Primary Education, Dr S Shailajanath and submitted a memorandum in this regard.

Pvt. Engg. Colleges urge CM to clear Rs. 3,000 cr tuition fee arrears by month end

Hyderabad, January 13: The managements of private engineering colleges have urged the State government to release the arrears under tuition fee reimbursement scheme to the tune of Rs 3,000 crores by the end of this month.

A delegation of private engineering colleges managements, led by their association president, Mr Malakonda Reddy, met the Chief Minister, Mr Kiran Kumar Reddy, in the Secretariat on Thursday in this regard.

Typing test for applicants; High Court posts

Hyderabad, January 13: The Registry of Andhra Pradesh High Court has said in a press release here that it was decided to conduct typing test to all the eligible candidates, who have applied for the posts of Typist/Copyist in response to its Notification No.3 of 2010, on February 6 in three batches at the High Court Building here.

The exam time-table is first batch (Hall Ticket no.01-1200) at 10 am, second Batch (Hall Ticket no.1201-2400) at 12.30 pm and third batch (Hall Ticket no.2401-3590) at 3 pm.

44 deemed universities facing closure get breather

New Delhi, January 12: In a relief to 44 deemed universities that were faced with the prospect of de-recognition, the government Tuesday told the Supreme Court that it will carry out a fresh reappraisal of their infrastructure and facilities.

Following the submission, the court gave the central government two weeks to issue individual notices to each of the 44 deemed universities pointing out deficiencies.

The 44 universities have been given 2 weeks’ time to submit their replies.
