Nagaland University considers course on Medicinal plants-VC

Kohima, January 23:The Nagaland University is considering to offer Post Graduate in management of medicinal plants.

According to official sources here today Vice chancellor, Nagaland University, Professor K Kannan said the state is endowed with various medicinal plants, but no proper study has so far been made.

He said offering Post Graduate in Management of Medicinal Plants in the University would immensely help explore its unexplored medicinal plants for health care in the state.

Turnout huge for Law but low for PG, MCA exams

Hyderabad, Janaury 22: On the second day of Osmania University examinations the attendance for the PG and MCA examinations witnessed a further dip with less than 15 per cent each appearing for both the examinations. The attendance for the law examinations, however, was huge with more than 72 per cent appearing.

The examination boycott call was given by the OU Joint Action Committee (OUJAC) demanding introduction of a bill on separate Telangana state in Parliament.

Inter exam nominal rolls sent to colleges

Hyderabad, January 22: The Secretary, Board of Intermediate Education, has stated that the Nominal Rolls of the candidates appearing for First and Second Year Intermediate Public Examinations have been sent to the respective Junior Colleges.

The BIE secretary advised all the students to contact the principals of the junior colleges where they have paid the examination fee and verify the correctness of the entries/particulars and if there was any error, the same may be brought to the notice of the Principal concerned to get them rectified.

Delhi University to host Northeast Students Festival

New Delhi, January 21: With an avowed aim to foster a special bond with students of the northeast and make them more aware of safety measures, the Delhi University will organise a Northeast Students Festival here Monday.

S.K. Vij, dean of students welfare, Delhi University, Friday said: ‘The main aim of the fest – Empowering Youth: The North East Students in Delhi University – is to make the students hailing from the region more familiar with the university system.’

British Council workshop for English teachers

Hyderabad, January 21: An international conference for English language educators will be hosted by the British Council in association with EFL-U (English and Foreign Languages University) at the Novotel and HICC Complex in the city from January 22 to 24.

Hyderabad, January 20: NCTT Centre for fire & Safety Engineering is conducting fire and safety courses at Hyderabad. SSC, Inter, Degree and Engineering candidates can apply for admission to the courses.

Prohibitory orders at exam centres

Hyderabad, January 20: Anticipating trouble from pro-Telangana students who were demanding postponement of semester examinations till separate Telangana is created, the city and the Cyberabad police have imposed prohibitory orders at all the examination centres in the city. The OU post-graduate examinations are scheduled to be held from tomorrow and would continue till February 7.

Girls draw a blank in AMU students union poll

Aligarh, January 20: None of the girls won when they contested for the top posts in the Aligarh Muslim University Students Union for the first time, despite women students comprising nearly half the electorate.

Asma Jawed, a research scholar in the Department of Hindi, contested for the post of president and Somya Pundhir, first-year BA (Hons) History student, for vice-president while Naheed Mustafa, a final year student of BA-LLB, was running for the post of honorary secretary.

Education department’s e-mail hacked, porn sent to schools

Hoshiarpur, January 20: In an incident that left school teachers in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur district red-faced, the official e-mail address of the education office here was hacked Thursday and pornographic content was circulated to all the 400 government schools in the district.

‘We were using this e-mail address to send notices and important information to the schools in Hoshiarpur. This is a case of cyber attack as someone has sent pornographic material to all schools after hacking this e-mail address,’ Sukhwinder Kaur, deputy district education officer (DEO), Hoshiarpur, told IANS.

Delhi plans upgrade of facilities in 400 schools

New Delhi, January 19: The Delhi government Wednesday said it would start work in a month on strengthening infrastructure in its 400 schools to avoid a repeat of a stampede in a school in Khajoori Khas in east Delhi in 2009 in which five students were killed.

Appearing before Delhi High Court’s division bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Sanjiv Khanna, government’s standing counsel Najmi Waziri said work would start in the schools within a month.

Government to ban PhD in distance mode

Hyderabad, January 19: Taking serious note of the alleged scam in the awarding of PhD degrees at Dravidian University, the government has decided to impose ban on conducting PhD programmes through distance mode. Based on the report submitted by a two-member probe committee, the vice-chancellors decided to constitute a panel of subject experts and academicians from other universities to award PhD degrees. Meanwhile, notices were issued seeking clarification from the Dravidian University vice-chancellor on the findings of the two-member committee.

OU exams to be held as scheduled

Hyderabad, January 19: Notwithstanding the call from students to boycott all examinations, the state government has decided to conduct the semester examinations for MBA and MCA programmes in Osmania University from January 20 as per schedule.

The government has also decided to look into the complaints against the lecturers who are allegedly neglecting their duties and participating in agitations for and against separate Telangana along with students.

PhD admission in distance mode to be banned: Minister

Hyderabad, January 19: The PhD admission in distance mode would be banned in all the universities in the State from the next academic year.

The decision was taken at a meeting held by the Minister for Higher and Technical Education, Mr Damodar Rajanarsimha, with the Vice Chancellors of 10 Universities.

Speaking to mediapersons after the meeting in the Secretariat, Mr Rajanarsimha said that the government has taken the decision in the wake of irregularities taking place in admission and awarding PhD in the Dravidian University.

CSIR to promote earth sciences

Hyderabad, January 18: There is an immense need to popularise earth sciences among the younger generation.

The NGRI will start teaching the trans-disciplinary subject of earth sciences and plans to offer post-graduate programmes and PhDs which are not ordinarily taught in colleges and universities, Prof. Samir K. Brahmachari, Director General of CSIR, has said.

Speaking at the 50th Foundation Day celebrations at the NGRI, he said the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research would float ACSIR (CSIR Academy) to achieve that objective.

Nobel Laureate demystifies quantum physics

Hyderabad, January 18: For most people, this is a field of science which is difficult to explain in layman terms.

However, Nobel Laureate AJ Leggett tried to explain ‘Does the world obey the law of quantum mechanics in our daily life?’ at the BM Birla Science Centre on Monday.

Leggett, considered a pioneer in the theory of low-temperature physics said, “Quantum Physics had succeeded in describing the nature in atomic level. But the explanation of the theory meant the result was uncertain until the experiment was observed.”

Jan. 30 written test for APPs put off

Hyderabad, January 18: The written examination for the recruitment to the posts of Additional Public Prosecutors Grade II and Assistant Public Prosecutors in Andhra Pradesh State Prosecution Service mentioned in the notification dated November 12, 2010 scheduled to be held on January 30, 2011 stands postponed for the time-being.

Further date will be announced in due course, the Chairman, State Level Police Recruitment Board, Andhra Pradesh, Hyderabad has said.

Super specialty campus of NTR varsity to be set up in Mangalagiri

Hyderabad, January 18: Academic, Research and Super Specialty Campus of NTR Health University will be set up in 75 acres in Mangalagiri of Guntur district. The State government was also mulling over to bring a policy on medical education on the lines of Tamil Nadu.

The decision has been taken at a review meeting held by the Chief Minister, Mr Kiran Kumar Reddy, on Medical Education in the Secretariat here. The Minister for Health and Medical Education, Dr D L Ravindra Reddy, and the Principal Secretary of Health, Dr P V Ramesh, and other officials attended the review meeting.

Mandatory test for teachers’ eligibility soon: Sibal

New Delhi, January 18: Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal Monday said that a Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) will soon be made mandatory for teachers as the Right to Education Act is implemented. Speaking at the meeting of central and state regulatory institutions for School education, the minister said that this test will be as per the norms of the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE).
